THE COALITION CONNECTION
November 20, 2015
Dear NCGS Community,

Experiential learning opportunities can help build confidence and self-esteem in girls as well as address gender inequality worldwide. NCGS is proud to support several experiential learning initiatives during the summer of 2016 that promote everything from girls' leadership to building acumen in STEM.

Trips to the Grand Canyon, Costa Rica, and Dominican Republic will provide experiences for students and faculty from NCGS member schools to connect with peer leaders, grow as individuals, and make an impact in their communities. The excursions will also promote collaboration between a diverse range of NCGS member schools and help create bonds of sisterhood that aren't restricted by alma maters or geographic location.

NCGS and its strategic partner, Grand Classroom, are offering once again the opportunity to participate in a girls' leadership retreat to the Grand Canyon on June 18-22. The program is designed to bring together groups of student leaders and their faculty advisers from NCGS upper schools to share ideas and hone leadership skills in one of the most inspiring destinations on earth. Click here for more details and registration information (registration deadline is December 20).

We are pleased to also continue our collaboration with CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) allowing us to offer a three-week STEM program in Costa Rica on July 18 - August 8. Based on the success of the recent summer's experience, students and faculty will pursue three STEM topics: biology/biodiversity, conservation, and sustainability. Click here for more details.

NCGS is excited to add a third program next summer. The Mariposa DR Foundation has created a unique opportunity for students and faculty from NCGS schools to travel to the Dominican Republic and volunteer at The Mariposa Center for Girls. Participants will work closely with their Mariposa peers to research and design permanent and rotating exhibits that will form the Center's new "Girl Museum." An interactive learning environment and visual journey into how girls have the unique power to change the world, the "Girl Museum" will be created by girls, for girls, and about girls. Two sessions for this trip are available: June 12-June 30 (Session A) and July 10-July 28 (Session B). Click here for more details and the application.

We hope each of these experiences instills in its participants a desire to explore, take risks, and see the world from a different point of view.

Safe travels!

Megan

Meet Our Global Forum Strategic Partners

NCGS is proud to host the 2016 Global Forum on Girls' Education, Creating a World of Possibilities (February 7-9, 2016 at the New York Marriott Marquis), in partnership with preeminent educational organizations from around the globe. We could not coordinate this groundbreaking conference without their support and involvement. It is our pleasure to introduce two more of these organizations in our ongoing series, "Meet Our Global Forum Partners."

The Alliance of Girls' Schools Australasia is a not for profit organization which aims to promote the education of girls in all-girls schools and increase public awareness that single-sex schools provide the optimal learning environment for girls. As the peak advocacy group for girls' education in Australasia, the Alliance provides leadership opportunities for girls and educators through conferences, provides network support, publishes a biannual magazine, and sources research on single-sex education. We are grateful to the Alliance for inviting Holly Ransom, CEO of Emergent Solutions, to be a keynote speaker at the Global Forum.

The Girls' Schools Association (GSA) represents the heads of many of the top performing day and boarding schools in the U.K. independent schools sector. It encourages high standards of education for girls and promotes the benefits of being taught in a largely girls-only environment. The GSA aims to inform and influence educational debate in the U.K. and provides its members and their staff with professional development courses, conferences, advice, and opportunities to debate and share best practice. Thanks to the GSA, Baroness Sue Campbell, Chair of Youth Sport Trust, will join us at the Global Forum as a keynote speaker.

Don't miss out! Early Bird registration rates end in just two weeks! Click here to register to attend the Global Forum on Girls' Education.
Marymount School of New York to Host Student Technology Conference
Following the success of the inaugural conference, Marymount School of New York is hosting again its Student Technology ConferenceConnecting the World, One Student at a Time, on Saturday, January 30, 2016. This free, online event will feature keynote speakers and crowdsourced presentations by students in grades 6-12.

The Student Technology Conference provides students from around the world a forum for the presentation, discussion, and sharing of educational technology in schools and other academic settings. Goals for the conference are:
  • Fostering a better understanding of how students use technology in education and to engage students, teachers and administrators in a conversation about technology.
  • Assisting teachers and administrators in understanding how students use technology both in and out of the classroom.
  • Strengthening the relationship between students, teachers, and administrators about technology in the curriculum.
The Call for Proposals for student presentations is now open through January 16.

NCGS Member Schools Offered Discount on "Moms as Mentors" Program

Emilie Liebhoff, former NCGS Deputy Director, has joined forces with Leslie Coles, former Director of Strategic Initiatives and Programs, to launch The Moms as Mentors Project. The program provides mothers with the tools and opportunities they need to be mentors in their daughters' daily lives, with a particular emphasis on three topics where mothers have a significant impact on their daughters' development: STEM, business/entrepreneurship, and social-emotional learning.

Moms as Mentors partners with public and independent schools to: 1) offer innovative turnkey alternatives for parent-education and 2)
provide parents with powerful takeaway tools and resources to positively impact their daughters' social-emotional and career outcomes.

For independent schools, Moms as Mentors programs have an added admissions benefit of attracting and engaging prospective families. Miss Porter's School Chief Enrollment & Student Affairs Officer and NCGS board member Liz Schmidt remarked on her school's experience with the business/entrepreneurship session:

"The Moms as Mentors team brings incredible insight and skill to the delivery of a fun and informative curriculum for mothers and daughters. The program allowed us to enroll several highly qualified students and encouraged even more to consider applying to Miss Porter's School in the upcoming year. This winter, we will again partner with Moms as Mentors on their STEM program..."

As members of the NCGS family, Emilie and Leslie remain committed to supporting girls' schools. NCGS member schools can receive 10% off of all Moms as Mentors half-day programs for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Check out the public school and  independent school brochures for more information.
Highlights from the NCGS "Listening & Learning Tour"

Recently, Executive Director Megan Murphy traveled to Princeton, NJ for the annual Head Mistresses Association of the East (HMAE) conference where she had the opportunity to connect with more than twenty heads of NCGS member schools. Here's what she said from the road:

"HMAE Executive Director Diana Coulton Beebe, President Ann Klotz (Head of Laurel School), and their planning committee held an outstanding conference. Guest speaker and author of The Social Profit Handbook, David Grant gave an excellent presentation on effective board governance and Natalie W. Nixon inspired us to use design thinking and be improvisational and adaptable as leaders."
