THE COALITION CONNECTION
September 25, 2015
Dear NCGS Community,

"The greatest invention in the world is the mind of a child." -- Thomas Edison

"You must do the thing you think you cannot do." -- Eleanor Roosevelt

The combination of these two concepts is central to what we do so well in girls' schools. Your schools are filled with "the greatest invention in the world." And your work is dedicated to helping mold and grow your students to have the confidence to do what they think they cannot.

At girls' schools, we believe in pushing boundaries to discover new possibilities. The importance of innovation is key to our success as educators, as schools, and, perhaps most importantly, for our students as they move beyond our campuses into the real world.

As the global market place is constantly changing, we can no longer only educate tomorrow's leaders and workforce for specific occupations. In order for our girls and young women to be successful, we must educate them to be more innovative and creative. Being innovative is about looking beyond what we currently do well, identifying the great ideas of tomorrow, and putting them into practice.

As a result of our recent From STEM to STEAM: Girls' Schools Leading the Way Conference, the innovations happening in a few of our member schools was recently featured on the National Association of Independent School's (NAIS) Inspiration Lab story board. Check out these forward-thinking programs taking place at Foxcroft School, Louise S. McGehee School, St. Catherine's School, and Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart

These are just a handful of the initiatives happening in our girls' schools to encourage innovative thinking in our students. We encourage you to share your own stories about classroom innovation across all disciplines - from the arts and humanities to STEM - and we will post your creative ideas on our NCGS Member News webpage and in social media

As the poet Maya Angelo said, "You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have."  We look forward to reading your stories and learning about the creative and innovative ways our member schools are preparing girls for the future.

Regards,
Megan Murphy

Highlights from the NCGS "Listening & Learning Tour"

Last week, Jen Shakeshaft, Director of Strategic Initiatives & Professional Development, traveled to the Lone Star State. Here's what she had to say from the road:

"I had the good fortune to head to Dallas/Fort Worth for the 2015 Young Women's Preparatory Network (YWPN) Leadership Summit, a gathering of 40 principals, college bound advisers, school leaders, and foundation board members from the following NCGS member schools: Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders - Austin, Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School - Dallas, Young Women's Leadership Academy - Fort Worth, Young Women's Leadership Academy at Bill Arnold - Grand PrairieYoung Women's College Preparatory Academy - Houston, Talkington School for Young Women Leaders - Lubbock, and Young Women's Leadership Academy - San Antonio. Attendees had the opportunity to hear from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, a true champion of public all-girls education, as well as to network and share ideas. I especially enjoyed hearing the presentations offered by each school in the Network on topics such as growth mindset, senior capstone projects, STEM community partnerships, Makerspaces, and summer leadership programs.

NCGS is proud to partner with YWPN along other pre-eminent educational organizations from around the globe for the 2016 Global Forum on Girls' Education."
