THE COALITION CONNECTION
May 1, 2015
Dear NCGS Community,

As the end of another school year rapidly approaches, our schedules are filled with final exams and report cards, end-of-the-year traditions and graduation, and then comes that much need time for rejuvenation and reflection... summer! A time when educators and students alike can unwind and lose themselves in a good book - one that doesn't have a paper or pop quiz looming at the end of the last page.

Several NCGS member schools select an all-school book for students and faculty or an all-faculty book for summer time reading. Recommended reading lists for students by grade levels are also popular practice.

As a thought leader in girls' education, NCGS has launched an Amazon eStore with recommended reading lists for educators, students, and parents. NCGS thanks the faculty and staff at member school Harpeth Hall for curating this summer's reading lists grouped by age-appropriate levels. This new resource is available to help your schools identify an all-faculty book or inspire selections for your students.

I invite you to take a moment to check out my latest post on the "Raising Girls' Voices" blog about the value of reading for pleasure.

In the meantime, I send best wishes for the conclusion of another successful school year, and hope you find the time this summer to relax with a good book.

Regards,

Megan

Reminder: Richmond Girls' School NET Registration

NCGS is hosting a Girls' School NET: Networking and Empowering Together event in Richmond, Virginia, on Tuesday, June 23, 2015, during the 2015 NCGS Conference: From STEM TO STEAM: Girls' Schools Leading the Way. May 11 is the deadline to inform NCGS if your school will be inviting alumnae to the reception. You do not need to commit to a certain number of alumnae guests until after you have completed your RSVP process.

Hi-res NCGS LogoThe Girls' School NET is a unique opportunity for our member schools to connect with their alumnae and fellow educators from other NCGS member schools. Even if you don't have a large number of alumnae in the Richmond area, Girls' School NET receptions always feel well attended due to the coming together of various NCGS member schools. Several member schools have enjoyed successful evenings at past NET events with only 1-3 alumnae guests.

If you are interested in inviting alumnae to join you at the Girls' School NET reception, please email Olivia Haas by May 11 with "NET VA 2015" as the subject.

Highlights from the NCGS "Listening & Learning Tour"

This past weekend, the NCGS team hosted a Girls' School Advantage advocacy outreach program in New York at Barnard College. Over 300 prospective families and educators attended the event to learn more about the unique benefits of an all-girls education. NCGS Executive Director Megan Murphy moderated a Q&A panel of student representatives from the following participating schools: The Brearley School, The Chapin School,  Convent of the Sacred Heart (NY), The Hewitt School, Marymount School of New York, The Nightingale-Bamford School, The Spence School, and the Young Women's Leadership Network (YWLN).

A 7th grade prospective applicant at the event said the program "opened [her] mind to think about attending a girls' school because of how excited the panelists were about their schools."

The 2014-2015 sponsor for the Girls' School Advantage program is Girl Up, an innovative campaign of the United Nations Foundation.
