THE COALITION CONNECTION
April 6, 2015
Dear NCGS Community,

NCGS is pleased to announce we are continuing our successful strategic partnership with the Online School for Girls (OSG) by offering an exciting online professional development opportunity this summer and fall. "Introduction to Girls' Schools" (formerly known as "Single Gender Education: An Orientation for New Faculty") provides an instructional insight to all teachers new to girls' schools, be they seasoned educators or new to the profession. In order for your newly hired faculty to thrive and succeed at their first all-girls school, it is necessary to provide them with approaches to teaching and learning that are most effective for girls.

The course allows participants to connect and collaborate with each other to explore the possible implications of research on the classroom environment. Educators will also discuss ways to create a collaborative student-centered learning space, including how technology can help achieve these goals. Ultimately, teachers will gain a clearer understanding of what it means to work in an all-girls school and will come away with ideas of how to create a classroom atmosphere and curriculum that maximizes how girls learn.

"Introduction to Girls' Schools" is a four-week long course and is currently scheduled twice during the summer months (June 22-July 17 and July 20-August 14) and once in the fall (October 13-November 6). Click here for more information about the course, including fees and comments from past participants.

We look forward to welcoming your new faculty as they join the extraordinary, unique learning environment of all-girls schools!

Best wishes,

Megan

Highlights from the NCGS "Listening & Learning Tour"

NCGS team members have been traveling near and far over the past several weeks. Here are reports from the road:

I attended the "Sharing Solutions: Advancing Girls in STEM" conference hosted by the Center for the Advancement of Girls at Agnes Irwin School and joined educators, alumnae, advocates, and other stakeholders to engage in a discussion about the leaky pipeline and persistence of girls and women in STEM fields. A highlight of the day included a hands-on demonstration led by Sophie, Hunter, and Anisha from AIS's Student STEM Club who taught us how to work together to build this beautiful -- and complicated -- geometric sculpture.

I visited the Young Women's Leadership Charter School of Chicago (YWLCS), the only all-girls public school in the city, which was started 15 years ago by a group of local businesswomen. In addition to meeting with several key administrators, I had the opportunity to observe an AP art class and speak with a group of very talented students and their incredibly passionate teacher. I especially loved hearing about the steps YWLCS takes to encourage girls to pursue higher education, including the tradition of taking all 9th graders to a college campus on their first day of school. It's clear by the school's 100% college acceptance rate that they are successful in this endeavor!

I also made my way to the National Science Teachers Association's annual conference in Chicago. I spent the majority of the day making my way through the massive exhibitor hall, talking with vendors and determining if they might be a good fit for our "STEM to STEAM Conference" this June. We are hopeful many of them will join us!
