THE COALITION CONNECTION
January 9, 2015
|
Dear NCGS Community,
NCGS provides a myriad of programs to support our member schools. Among them are advocacy, professional development, and research. Providing you with networking opportunities to connect and collaborate is also among the many ways NCGS serves our members. Simply put, NCGS is the "go-to" place for girls' education. With a network of 200 member schools around the globe -- that includes 12,000 faculty/staff, 60,000 students, and 700,000 alumnae living worldwide -- NCGS is pleased to offer our members a new networking resource. We have recently launched a LinkedIn Group to be used as a global discussion forum. It is our ultimate hope that member schools will use this online tool to engage with other girls' school educators by posting questions ranging from operational to strategic. Resulting feedback from across the NCGS network will spark informative, topical discussions and lead to future collaborations. We encourage you to join the NCGS LinkedIn Group today by clicking here. Coming up on January 26 is a more traditional networking opportunity. NCGS is hosting an event, Girls' School NET: Networking and Empowering Together, on the historic campus of Louise S. McGehee School in New Orleans. This evening reception, which is complimentary for NCGS member school staff and faculty, is coordinated in conjunction with the 2015 CASE-NAIS Conference. All NCGS member school representatives attending the conference are invited. To RSVP, please email NAME and TITLE to ncgs@ncgs.org by January 21. The NET reception is an excellent opportunity for girls' school educators to connect with peers working in a common capacity across the NCGS network. Schools with alumnae in the area are encouraged to invite them to join the reception for a ready-made, cost-effective regional alumnae event. Click here for more details. We hope to hear from you on LinkedIn and see you in the Big Easy! Best wishes,
Megan Murphy
Executive Director

Agnes Irwin School to Host STEM Think Tank
| |
The Center for the Advancement of Girls at Agnes Irwin School is hosting its first STEM think tank, Sharing Solutions: Advancing Girls in STEM, March 19-20, 2015. The event will bring together 120 invited educators from K-12 and higher education settings, policy makers, and senior-executive industry leaders. Two major voices in STEM advocacy will give keynote addresses to kick off the think tank, followed by a day of small group discussions of identified issues in the participation and persistence of girls and women in STEM. There are many factors that contribute to the phenomenon known as the "leaky pipeline" in STEM. Unconscious biases, cultural and societal influences, social pressures, and historical disadvantages are a few possible reasons why women are not prominently represented in STEM fields. The symposium will focus on three defined themes that research has shown to have a positive impact on girls' interest and persistence in STEM: - Preparation of teachers at each educational level
- Power of mentors in the lives of girls and women in STEM fields
- Importance of partnerships across industries
