THE COALITION CONNECTION
March 28, 2014
Dear NCGS Community,

Last year, NCGS had the pleasure of working with several of our member schools in the Los Angeles area to launch a new outreach initiative, The Girls' School Advantage program. In response to member school feedback received during my ongoing "Listening and Learning Tour," this free information session was designed for prospective families to learn about the effectiveness and unique environment of all-girls schools.

Due to the success of the inaugural event, The Girls' School Advantage program expanded this year to include a session in the Seattle-Tacoma region last week and upcoming sessions are scheduled in Washington, DC on April 5 and Baltimore on April 6. The program will return to Los Angeles on April 27. Click here for more details and to register to attend.

Recognizing that selecting a school is both a matter of the head and the heart for our families, The Girls' School Advantage program is designed to address this balance by presenting quantitative and qualitative information. First, Dr. Linda Sax from UCLA, the keynote speaker for this year's sessions, talks about her research into gender-differences in education. (Click here for a copy of her remarks from the recent Seattle session.) Second, we have a student panel, which includes a representative from each of the participating schools, who answer questions from the audience. The event concludes with a fair for NCGS member schools where administrators, student panelists, and alumnae are available to answer school-specific questions.

This year The Girls' School Advantage program is bringing together a combined total of almost 30 girls' schools to make the case for "why all-girls?" to approximately 500 prospective families. This is the definition of the Coalition in its purest form: bringing together members to promote mutual interest.

I hope you are able to join us and experience first-hand one of The Girls' School Advantage regional events!

Best wishes,

Megan

Carnegie Mellon's PROGRESS Offering Negotiating Skills Workshop for Students

The Program for Research and Outreach on Gender Equity in Society (PROGRESS) at Carnegie Mellon University aims to improve society by empowering girls and women through the art of negotiation. On May 3, 2014, at Simmons College in Boston, PROGRESS is hosting a workshop for 100 middle school girls, Speak Up! Getting What You Want Through the Power of Negotiation.

This half-day workshop teaches girls, ages 8 to 13, the importance of negotiating and how to do so effectively. Such skills better ensure girls will not fall into risky behaviors and will be less likely to accept bullying and limiting behaviors imposed by others. As girls move into competitive environments in the workplace and other arenas, negotiation becomes increasingly important in ensuring equitable treatment. This workshop helps equip students with the tools to make better decisions in their personal lives.

The registration deadline is April 11, 2014. Click here for more information and to register.

Highlights from the NCGS "Listening and Learning Tour"

Last week, Executive Director Megan Murphy traveled to Honolulu and the Sea-Tac region for NCGS programs. Here's what she said from the road:

"Former NCGS Trustee and Head of School Betty White and her team at Sacred Hearts Academy hosted a 'Personal Finance Education Day' in collaboration with NCGS and our strategic partner the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Students from NCGS member LaPietra Hawaii School for Girls and St. Andrew's Priory School for Girls were invited to attend. Interactive sessions included, How to Finance College, Personal Finance Workshop, Purposes & Functions of the Fed, and an Entrepreneurial Leadership Panel Discussion. To learn more about the educational resources available at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, including Play the Fed Chair Game, click here."

"While in the Sea-Tac region, I visited Annie Wright Schools and, as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, was intrigued by their Passion Program that provides students the opportunity to explore the things they love in authentic, meaningful ways, within a framework that both encourages independence and provides support. That evening, NCGS hosted The Girls' School Advantage program for member schools, including Annie Wright Upper School, Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, Lake Washington Girls Middle School, Seattle Girls' School, and prospective member Al-Noor Academy of Arts and Sciences. Details of this program are included in my opening letter."

Director of Strategic Communications & Research Olivia Haas was invited to attend this week The Report on the Status of Women & Girls in California hosted by Mount St. Mary's College, the only women's college in Los Angeles. The report, now in its third year, was released at a special event with guest speakers including Geena Davis, Academy Award-winning actor and founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media; former CA State Senator Sheila James Kuehl; and Ana Guerrero, Chief of Staff for LA Mayor Eric Garcetti. Click here for a complete list of speakers.

As the guest of the event moderator, award-winning journalist and former host of Marketplace Money Tess Vigeland, Olivia dined with the President of Mount St. Mary's, Ann McElaney-Johnson, and shared the good work that our member schools are doing to educate and prepare the next generation of leaders.
