December 6, 2013
Dear NCGS Community,

It is my great pleasure to announce Margaret Broad, retired Head of St. Margaret's School (VA) and NCGS Trustee, as recipient of our 2013-2014 Ransome Prize!

Margaret truly embodies the spirit for which this award was created. The Ransome Prize is presented annually in honor of NCGS co-founder Whitty Ransome. Recipients reflect the traits that characterized Whitty's own commitment to NCGS: a pure devotion to a higher cause, joyfulness in serving others, and the grace and generosity in allowing others to take credit for good work. The Ransome Prize is awarded to a woman who has made outstanding contributions to the Coalition and one of its member schools to further the NCGS mission to be "a leading advocate for girls' education with a distinct commitment to the transformative power of all-girls schools."

Ransome Prize Winner Margaret Broad

This criterion could not more accurately describe Margaret Broad who has made it her life's work to support the growth of young women in every area of their lives. She joined St. Margaret's School in 1980 as a French teacher, beginning a 33-year devotion to all-girls education before

retiring from her position as Head of School earlier this year. Margaret is currently an NCGS Trustee and has previously served as Board Chair and Membership Committee Chair.

Ever humble, Margaret is known among her colleagues and peers for her patience, kindness, and flexibility. As stated in one of several nominations submitted on Margaret's behalf, "She is a true example of

the St. Margaret's motto: 'As we grow in age, may we grow in grace.'"

We will recognize Margaret on Friday, February 7, in Philadelphia at the opening of the National Conference on Girls' Education.

Please join us in honoring this remarkable member of the NCGS community!

Best wishes,
Megan

This unique blended learning program, which includes a separate track for STEM and for humanities faculty, helps teachers gain the expertise needed to forge a contemporary approach to teaching girls. It is intended for girls' school educators who have distinguished themselves in classroom teaching and learning and wish to both learn from experts in the girls' school community and connect with fellow learners.

Highlights from Megan Murphy's "Listening and Learning Tour"

Megan traveled the I-95 corridor in the past few weeks, stopping in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. Here's what she said from the road:

"I am honored to serve on the Advisory Board of the Center for the Advancement of Girls (CAG) at Agnes Irwin School. At our recent meeting, we discussed best practices in leadership development at girls' schools. Founded in 2011, CAG focuses -- through research, innovative programming, and community engagement -- on four domains of girls' lives: leadership, wellness, global citizenship, and teaching and learning in the 21st century."

"In New York City, I met with our partners at the Young Women's Leadership Network to plan details for the upcoming National Conference on Girls' Education (NCGE). I also had the pleasure of meeting with the Girl Scouts of the USA at their headquarters. I am delighted the Girl Scouts are members of the NCGE Advisory Board, an esteemed group of organizations and institutions representing the most significant thought leaders in girls' education."

[L to R] Simmons College President Helen Drinan,
Maranyundo School Headmistress Sister Juvenal Mukamurama, and
NCGS Executive Director Megan Murphy

"NCGS held a breakfast event for 35 Boston-area educators from NCGS member schools, hosted by Simmons College. As a special opportunity, Headmistress Sister Juvenal Mukamurama from NCGS member Maranyundo School in Rwanda, spoke about the challenges and triumphs of educating girls in an impoverished society."
