June 14, 2013
Dear Members,

It's hard to believe, but the opening day of our 2013 Annual Conference, Launching Future Leaders: Preparing Today's Girls to Shape Tomorrow's World, is only a week away! We're anticipating a record number of attendees reflecting the full depth and breadth of our member schools. Nearly 100 girls' schools across the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and Rwanda will be represented by almost 300 registrants.

I'm also excited to announce the addition of Dr. Kerry Healey, President-elect of Babson College, to our already impressive line-up of keynote speakers! Dr. Healey will join Helen Drinan, President of Simmons College, for the closing keynote conversation of the conference: "Girls' Leadership Development Beyond K-12."

Dr. Healey was the 70th Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 2003-2007, where she served side-by-side with Governor Mitt Romney. In 2008, she was appointed by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to the U.S. Department of State's Public Private Partnership for Justice Reform in Afghanistan and was reappointed in 2009 by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Click here to read more about Dr. Healey's career.

We are thrilled Dr. Healey -- an established leader in the politic sector and new head of the college ranked No. 1 by U.S. News & World Report in entrepreneurship education -- is joining our conference dedicated to developing the next generation of women leaders.

I look forward to seeing many of you in Boston when we come together to share best practices and strategies for educating girls with the confidence, skills, and convictions to fulfill their potential as influential contributors to the world.

Best wishes,
Megan

The Girls' School Advantage Event in Los Angeles

On June 9, NCGS hosted, along with six member schools, the inaugural Girls' School Advantage event in Los Angeles. This unique information session was created for Los Angeles area prospective families to learn about the effectiveness and unique environment of all-girls schools. Participating NCGS member schools included The Archer School for Girls, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, Marlborough School, Marymount High School, Ramona Convent Secondary School, and Westridge School.

Nearly 400 attendees learned about the benefits of an all-girls education and the wide variety of girls' school in Los Angeles. Presenters included opening remarks from NCGS Executive Director, Megan Murphy, keynote speaker Dr. Linda J. Sax of UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute, and a Q&A panel of student representatives from each of the participating schools.

Guests' comment cards overwhelmingly praised the effectiveness of the student panelists, who shared personal testimonials such as, "My school feels like a family away from my family and a home away from home. I have sixty sisters supporting me and I wouldn't be the person that I am today without having gone to an all-girls school. I would still be that girl sitting at the back of the class just taking notes and not being involved in discussions like I am today."

The event concluded with a school fair where administrators, student panelists, and current parents were available to answer school-specific questions.

Center for Research on Girls at Laurel School Symposium

The Center for Research on Girls at Laurel School will present "21st Century Athenas: Cultivating Resilience and Achievement" on October 25-27, 201CRG at Laurel School Logo3. This symposium is designed for educators and advocates of girls and is devoted to integrating research and practice.

Featured presenters will be keynote speaker Carol Gilligan, Ph.D., researchers Belle Liang, Ph.D. of Boston College and Renee Spencer, Ph.D. of Boston University, and speakers Eileen Anderson-Fye, Ed.D. and Sandra Russ, Ph.D. of Case Western Reserve University. The results of CRG's groundbreaking research on girls' achievement and well-being will be shared.

Highlights from Megan Murphy's "Listening and Learning Tour"

In addition to attending the Girls' School Advantage program in Los Angeles this week, Megan traveled to New York City to be a guest at the Commencement Exercises at Marymount School. Here are her comments from the road:

"Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor gave the Commencement Address and encouraged Marymount graduates to live fun-filled lives characterized by 'giving to others and learning new things.' At NCGS, we wish to extend Justice Sotomayor's inspiring message to all Class of 2013 graduates!"

"Additionally, NCGS wishes to recognize two milestone graduations: the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders for graduating their first class and the 199th graduating class from Emma Willard School where Madame Emma Hart Willard, portrayed by actress Yvonne Perry, gave the Commencement Address."
