Credit Tips for First Time Homebuyers
Need to build up or even rebuild your credit?

Are you considering buying your first home? Your first step should be pulling your credit report. You'll see what creditors are reporting about you. Go to www.annualcreditreport.com, where you can get a free copy of your credit report once a year from each of the three credit bureaus. Once you've got it, you can review it for errors and credit issues. You can also sit down with an expert, one of our loan officers, who will help you understand what the report means and how it effects your ability to buy your first home.

Now that you've got your credit report in hand you discover that it doesn't look so good. How can you fix it? Well there are three things you want to do. First, go over it with a fine tooth comb and make sure that everything on it is correct. Sometimes someone transposes a number on a Social Security Number or a company doesn't do a good job keeping it's records up to date. The Annual Credit Report site has a dispute function built into it and you can file them before you even leave it.

Next, make sure you're paying every current debt that you have on time. That's the single most important part of any credit report and even if you're taking care of old debts it won't matter much if you aren't paying your current debts.

Finally, start paying off any collection accounts or charge offs that appear on the report. Paying them in full is ideal, but if you can't afford to do that, contact your creditors and ask them what they will accept instead. When they update the report it will usually show that they accepted a lesser settlement, but that's better than an unpaid debt.

So people with good credit are all set, and we've got a game plan for people with less than stellar credit, but what if you have no credit? There are a couple of things that you can do to remedy that.

If you've got some time before you're ready to purchase your first home the best thing is to start building some credit. Ideally, credit bureaus want to see you use several different types of credit, including open ended loans like a credit card, as well as installment loans like auto or personal loans . We can help you with any or all of these and so you can establish some credit history.

If you've got less time to build your credit history, or your history is a little thin, you may want to consider a USDA Rural Development Loan. These are available anywhere in Henry County and in many parts of Wayne County and they are willing to consider alternate types of credit history. Things like paying your cell phone bill, rent and utilities. Come in and talk to one of our loan officers and find out more!

These are just a few good tips to get you started. For more ideas, like and follow us on Facebook and you'll get our weekly financial tips on Mondays, money and time saving recipes on Wednesdays and Greener Living tips on Friday, that will all help you save money you can use for your down payment!
