Summer Yearling Session Nominations Due April 30 Mixed Sale Session
|
Emerald Downs 20th season couldn't have had better weather to welcome horses and race fans back to the Washington racing scene. Sunshine and mild temperatures prevailed over the April 18-19 opener.
The Saturday allowance feature was the $21,500 Muckleshoot Casino purse for three-year-olds. One Horse Will Do Corporation's O B Harbor provided an exciting seven-length win in the 5 1/2-furlong race. Bred in Oregon by Bret Christopherson - the son of Pam and Neal Christopherson (Bar C Racing Stables) - O B Harbor (Harbor the Gold-Flying Memo) is trained by Chris Stenslie and was ridden by Jose Zunino. The WTBOA Sales graduate improved his record to 2-1-1 in four starts.
Doris Harwood trainee Trick Or Retreat won Sunday's allowance feature for breeder Mark Malnati and his partner Robert McKay. The stakes-placed runner, who was partnered by Francisco Duran and is also a son of Harbor the Gold and out of Retreat After Me, by Liberty Gold, improved his record to 3-3-2 from nine starts and has earned $55,909. Portland Meadows Mile winner Sportive, who races for trainer Jacqueline Smith, finished second.
The win by eight-year-old mare Gold Boom, by Monarchos, in the second race on Sunday, provided reasons to celebrate for rider Joe Steiner and owner/trainer Arturo Arboleda. The race marked Steiner's return to Emerald Downs and gave him his 1,000th career win. For Arboleda, it marked a great way to celebrate his 91st birthday.
Through the first two days of racing, 2013-14 Emerald leading trainer Jeff Metz leads the way with a trio of wins. Rigoberto Velasquez (the leading earner at $24,180), Howard Belvoir and Michael Puhich each have saddled two winners. Six jockeys have scored doubles: Julien Couton (who also leads in money won with $24,465), 2014 Emerald leader Leslie Mawing, Emerald Downs all-time leading rider Gallyn Mitchell, 2012 leader Juan Gutierrez and Emerald all-time leading woman rider Jennifer Whitaker.

Lexie Lou Named Canadian Horse of the Year
It came as no surprise when Gary Barber's talented filly Lexie Lou was named 2014 Canadian Horse of the Year, Champion Three-year-old Filly and Turf Female at the Sovereign Awards ceremony held on April 10 at Woodbine. The daughter of Sligo Bay (Ire)-Oneexcessivenite, by In Excess (Ire), won half of her eight starts last year, headlined by victories in the Queen's Plate (Can-G1) and Woodbine Oaks (Can-G1). A stakes winner at two, the Ontario-bred distaffer also won the Autumn Miss Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita, the Wonder Where Stakes and ran second against 2014 US Horse of the Year California Chrome in the Hollywood Derby (G1) in 2014.
She was one of five 2014 Sovereign Award winners for her trainer Mark Casse, who was acknowledged with his seventh training award.
Her dam, Oneexcessivenite, a winner of four races and $143,695, is out of two-time Washington champion and Grade 2 winner Favored One, a daughter of Son of Briartic bred by Washington Racing Hall of Fame breeders William and Barbara Nelson.
Lexie Lou, who ran second in the La Canada Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita in her only start so far in 2015, has a lifetime record of 7-4-2 from 17 starts and has earned $1,469,714.

WHRC Grants ADW License to 123Gaming
At its April monthly meeting, the Washington Horse Racing Commission (WHRC) granted an advance deposit wagering license (ADW) to 123Gaming to operate 123bet.com.
The ADW license means Washington residents can play the popular 123racing Pick6 online, beginning immediately with the $2,000 guaranteed pool offered during the opening weekend at Emerald Downs.
123bet.com becomes the fourth advance deposit wagering company licensed in the state of Washington, joining TVG, Twinspires and XpressBet. It also is the only ADW to offer the 123 racing wager.
"The 123racing Pick6 has been popular in its first two years on-site," said Emerald Downs Vice President of Marketing Sophia McKee. "This is the natural next step to offer it to customers that want to play the wager from home."
Offered on the last six races every live racing day, 123racing Pick6 is a contest determined on the distribution of payouts of the win, place and show pari-mutuel pools. Winners are determined by largest aggregate payouts over six races. Tickets are sold in denominations of $2 and include a special nickname for each player, who can then easily follow along on mobile or TV leader boards updated after each race in the sequence.
Washington residents can sign up at 123bet.com. New Washington accounts will receive a $50 credit to try the new wager.

The five-year-old Washington-bred gelding by Prospected-Maid in Monroe, by Gilded Time, is trained by Billy Christian.

Rigoberto Velasquez trains both Mr. Top Kat and second place War Wizard. A trio of 2013 sale horses covered the one-two-three spots in a maiden/$25,000 optional (N) claiming race with Todd and Shawn Hansen's first-time starter Fooled Again, a Scat Daddy-Valour Road, by Honour and Glory, colt bred in Kentucky by Oak Crest Farm and trained by Howard Belvoir, taking the five-furlong outing by 3 1/4 lengths. Mark Dedomenico LLC and North American Thoroughbred Racing Co. Inc.'s Legion of Boom, a son of Harbor the Gold-Bahati, by Horse Chestnut (SAf), bred by Bar C Racing Stables Inc. and Desert Rose Racing, ran third in the five-furlong race. One Horse Will Do Corporation's O B Harbor also returned a winner (see Emerald Notes above).
Peach Springs, a four-year-old California-bred daughter of Distorted Reality, won an about seven-furlong maiden/$30,000 optional claiming (N) race over Turf Paradise's grass course on April 20. Her dam, $203,827 Portland Meadows stakes winner Complete Approval, was bred in Washington by George Dill and was a 1997 WTBOA sale RNA.

Jon Sather's two-time champion filly Ladyledue, by Slewdledo, had a filly by Curlin on February 27 and Highlander Racing Stables' 2013 horse of the year E Z Kitty, by He's Tops, produced her first foal, a colt by Exchange Rate, in early April. Both were foaled in Kentucky.

NTRA Submits Official Response to IRS/Treasury Request for Comment on Pari-mutuel Reporting and Withholding
Public Invited to Submit Comments to Policymakers via NTRA.com
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) has submitted its official response to an invitation by the Department of the Treasury (Treasury) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for comments on amending Treasury regulations regarding withholding and reporting with respect to pari-mutuel winnings. Submission of the NTRA's formal response kicked off a six-week campaign during which the NTRA is encouraging fans, horseplayers and industry stakeholders to support the push for modernized tax withholding and reporting from pari-mutuel wagering that accurately and fairly reflect the realities of wagering today. Specifically, the NTRA is asking Treasury and the IRS to amend their tax regulations to make it clear that the definition of the "amount of the wager" includes the total amount wagered by a bettor into a pari-mutuel pool when determining whether a bettor's winnings are subject to withholding and reporting. As explained in detail in the NTRA's response, such a clarification will result in more accurate withholding and reporting while also benefiting bettors and the horse racing and breeding industry as a whole.
The entire formal response to Treasury and the IRS by NTRA President and CEO Alex Waldropcan be accessed online as a downloadable PDF file here.
A form that makes it easy for the public to submit an e-mail directly to the appropriate IRS and U S Treasury officials seeking comment can also be found on the NTRA website at www.ntra.com/IRScomment.
Public comments will be accepted through June 2, 2015.
The NTRA's nine-page response describes the current withholding and reporting requirements, as well as the increasingly prevalent issues associated with those requirements.
Public Comment via NTRA.com
The NTRA encourages horseplayers, fans and industry stakeholders who will be positively impacted if the proposed changes are adopted to submit their own comments to Treasury and the IRS using a simple form now available online at www.NTRA.com/IRScomment.
"The two-step process can be completed in Secretariat time - under two minutes," said NTRA Senior Vice President Keith Chamblin, referring to the 1973 Triple Crown winner's Kentucky Derby record of 1:59 2/5.
The form creates a customized message from the sender's own e-mail address populated with suggested language crafted by the NTRA and submits it directly to the Treasury.
Industry Outreach
Throughout the public comment period, the NTRA will continue to coordinate additional responses from key industry stakeholders, including racetrack operators, horsemen's associations, owner and breeder groups, Advance Deposit Wagering (ADW) companies and horseplayers, among others.
Waldrop will be in Washington, DC, in the coming weeks for in-person follow-up meetings with Thoroughbred racing's allies within the federal government, including some of the 17 congressmen who signed a letter to the Treasury in support of this effort in June 2014.
Background
Past NTRA releases on the effort to modernize withholding and reporting for pari-mutuel winnings, as well as related editorials, can be found online here.

Former Emerald Downs Runner Competes at Rolex Three-Day Event
Allie Knowles and her OTTB "Sounder" will be among those competing in the Rolex Three-Day, a four-star CCI event to be held at the Kentucky Horse Park on April 23-25, 2015. The 16-1 hands Sounder is one of 21 ex-racehorses entered in the premier Kentucky event.
The 12-year-old gelding is a Kentucky-bred son of Eastern Echo-Miner's Girl, by Miner's Mark, whose official The Jockey Club name is Sound Prospect. Knowles and Sounder have competed successfully at the three-star level, finishing eighth at the Poplar Place CIC3* and ninth at Jersey Fresh CIC3*. This year, Allie and Sounder finished fifth in the CIC3* at Red Hills International and seventh in the CIC3* at the Carolina International Horse Trials. Rolex will be Sounder's first four-star horse trial.
Pedigree wise, his dam is a full sister to UAE stakes winner Cherry Pickings and a half-sister to Grade 3 stakes winner Western Echo, a son of Eastern Echo who earned over $600,000, and to Grade 1-placed Ms. Margaret H., by Point Given.
Sound Prospect was purchased as a yearling for $10,000 by Halvorson Bloodstock Services LLC at the 2003 January Keeneland sale. He began and ended his 13-race career at Emerald Downs - which included eight races at Portland Meadows in between - in maiden claiming races with a 0-2-1 record. His final start came on May 15, 2005, while running for Dolly Gibson and being trained by Gene Davis. Gibson had purchased the gelding from John Holmes, who was assisting for Grant Forster at the time.
A native of California, Knowles now lives in Paris, Kentucky, where most of her barn is occupied by OTTBs.
"I feel really excited," said Knowles. "He's the first Thoroughbred I've attempted a four-star on and I'm very excited about that aspect - having a horse that loves to run. I've yet to find the end or the bottom on him. He always wants to keep going."
Earlier this week, Hagyard Equine Medical Institute and Hagyard ReflexHA announced their sponsorship of Knowles at the Rolex event.
"I could not be more thrilled about this partnership with Hagyard," said Knowles. "I know that the care our horses are receiving is second to none, and I couldn't be more grateful for all of the incredible vets and staff at Hagyard."
"We at Hagyard are very excited for the opportunity to contribute to the success of a local rider - especially one of Allie's caliber," said Rhonda Rathgeber, DVM, PhD, head of Hagyard's Sport Horse Program. "We look forward to helping her keep her horses performing at their best throughout the eventing season, and we will be cheering her on at Rolex."

On April 9, it was announced that Dr. George Todaro, et al's champion Shared Beliefwas joined by Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (HK-1) winner Able Friend at the top of the second edition of the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings of 2015 with a 125 ranking.
Shared Belief was also named Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders champion three-year-old colt for 2014 at the KTOB's April 16 awards luncheon.
Unfortunately, Shared Belief suffered a non-displaced fracture on the point of his right hip while running in the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic on April 18. His rider Mike Smith pulled up the champion gelding in the second turn after the four-year-old did not seem to be traveling right. According to trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, Shared Belief "is going to go out for 45 to 60 days at Pegasus Training Center . . . and then he will resume training after that." He also said that his veterinarian "thinks that it is not going to be a serious long-range problem."
Todaro had two winners at Golden Gate over the second weekend in April when his and Hollendorfer's three-year-old Kentucky-bred Heatseeker (Ire) filly Trimona won a five-furlong turf maiden special weight race on Saturday in her second outing; and Elmonte Cristo, a four-year-old California-bred gelding by Don'tsellmeshort, took a six-furlong allowance on Sunday. Elmonte Cristo, who races for Todaro, Hollendorfer, Mark Dedomenico LLC and Mark Schlaich, has won four of ten starts and earned $82,623.
On April 18, Ernest Sherman's homebred Golden Guy, a four-year-old Washington-bred gelding by Harbor the Gold-Code Words, by Lost Code, trained by Blaine Wright, won a five-furlong maiden special weight race over Golden Gate's turf course.
Produce of two half-sisters to Magnum Farms' Houseofroyalhearts raced well at Santa Anita in early April. On April 4, stakes-placed Royal Grand Slam's daughter Grand Yodeler finished second by three-quarters of a length in the $200,000 Evening Jewel Stakes for California-bred three-year-old fillies. Grand Yodeler, by Swiss Yodeler, has won half of her three starts, including a maiden special weight race at Del Mar in her first start last July, and earned $156,680. Winner and multiple stakes producer Royal Woodman, by Woodman, is also the dam of five-year-old gelding Old Man Lake, by Salt Lake, who took a mile $12,500 claiming race by 6 3/4 lengths on April 2. He has won five races and earned $119,594.
Stakes-placed Lucky Views, a four-year-old California-bred gelding by Lucky Pulpit, won a nine-furlong starter allowance over Santa Anita's turf course on April 9. The $93,030 earner is out of unraced Deja Views, a daughter of 1997 Washington champion and $248,488 stakes winner Timely View, a daughter of Just the Time bred by Diane Kem.
Dan Agnew, John Xitco and William Branch's Rule He Will, a four-year-old California-bred gelding by Tribal Rule, went gate-to-wire to take a six-furlong maiden special weight race by 3 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita on April 11. Trained by Mark Glatt, he was one of four winning rides for Tyler Baze on the nine-race card.
A fun fact on the April 10, 2015, edition of Thoroughbred Daily News revealed that Selah-born trainer Wesley Ward has won the first two-year-old race at the Keeneland spring meeting in six of the last nine years, including most recently with Bruised Orange, a filly by City Zip, who defeated her second place stablemate Love the Kitten by three lengths in their first starts on April 8.
On April 10, the Ten Broeck Farm of Dave Mowat had a winner at Keeneland when the Ward-trained To Be Determined, a three-year-old daughter of Elusive Quality-Katori, by Dixie Union, won a six-panel maiden special weight race in gate-to-wire fashion.
On April 12, Mowat's Grade 1 winner Sunset Glow finished third in the Appalachian Presented by Japan Racing Association Stakes (G3) at the Lexington track. The sophomore daughter of Exchange Rate, who is also trained by Ward, was making her first start since finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) on October 31. In seven starts Sunset Glow has a record of 3-3-1 and has earned $579,145.
In the article "Dominating 2-year-old Races at Keeneland: How Wesley Ward Does It," by Bill Finley in the April 17, 2015, Thoroughbred Daily News, it was noted that of the 47 two-year-old maiden races run since 2009 at Keeneland's spring meet, Ward has had 45 entrants and won 22 (48.9%).
On April 19, in his first start since winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) on November 1, the Ward-trained Hootenanny, a three-year-old from the first crop of Quality Road, improved his race record to 4-1-1 from six starts and earnings level to $793,095 after winning a 5 1/2-fiurlong turf allowance at Keeneland by 6 1/4 lengths. It marked Ward's sixth win at the 2015 spring Kentucky meet.
Ward announced on April 20 that he plans to skip the Group 1 English 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, with Hootenanny and Sunset Glow, and instead aim the three-year-olds for the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot in order to give his trainees more time between races. The five-day meet, which runs June 16-20, features 18 group races.
Ward also trains To Be Determined's two-year-old half-sister Laxfield Road. The daughter of Quality Road was impressive in her debut, winning a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race at Keeneland by 10 3/4 lengths on April 22 for Hat Creek Racing.
Ball Dancing, the four-year-old daughter of Exchange Rate who won the $300,000 Jenny Wiley Stakes (G1) at Keeneland on April 11, is from the same female line as Gibson Thoroughbred Farm's War Power, asthey both stem from Irish champion *Glad Rags II.
In his nine-year-old debut, Ben's Cat finished second to five-year-old Bold Thunder in a five-furlong grass allowance race run at Pimlico on April 17. The four-time Maryland horse of the year and son of Gibson Thoroughbred Farm's Parker's Storm Cat, earned $15,015 to bring his lifetime total to $2,326,005.
It was announced on April 20 that Ben's Cat's owner/breeder/trainer King Leatherbury has been elected to the National Racing Hall of Fame.
In 2014, My Miss Sophia, by Unbridled's Song, won the Grade 2 Gazelle Stakes and finished second in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) to improve the pedigree of Lee McMillin, Mary McMillin and Yakima attorney and horseman David Thorner's eight-year-old Giant's Causeway mare Lilies So Fair, her half-sister. On March 26 the family was further enhanced when the two distaffers' younger half-brother Materiality, by Afleet Alex, won the $1-million Besilu Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park. The three half-siblings are among the five winners out of 100 percent producer and stakes winner Wildwood Flower, a 2001 daughter of Langfuhr.

William "Bill" Lewis, 76, passed away on March 29, 2015. He was born on December 31, 1937, and raised in the Spokane area.
As a young man, he lived briefly in California where he owned a horse ranch. It was there he met his future wife of 53 years, Jean. The couple soon returned to Washington and owned and ran multiple hotels in both Spokane and Ellensburg.
Although very successful with the hotels, his true passion was horses. Among the several runners he raced was Playfair Debutante Handicap winner Blue Mastadoon - in partnership with M. Shenyer - and the 1988 mare's winning offspring Seattle Slewis, Slewis and Blue Moon Express.
Bill was very devoted to his animals, taking great care of them and loved going to the track to watch his runners compete.
Among his hobbies were camping, fishing and basically anything outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean. Bill is survived by his stepchildren, Chuck (Jan) Westbrook, Larry Westbrook and Bob Westbrook; brothers, Jack (Jan) Lewis, Ken (Michelle) Lewis, Frank (Pat) Lewis; and sister, Claudia Hennen.

She also followed the family's horse racing business by watching the results daily on her computer.
Marilyn was passionate about her 11 grandchildren. She had special relationships with each of them and helped raise them. Attending all of their events was important to her. She would drive miles to see a game, first communion or graduation.
She worked for the Central Valley School District for 30 years in various buildings, including Keystone, Evergreen and Bowdish middle schools. Talk to My Lawyer
A third generation Washington champion race filly, Talk to My Lawyer was lost on April 14 due to the results of a severe twist shortly after foaling. The daughter of Lawyer Ron was six. Her Harbor the Gold colt, which is owned by Mary Lou and Terry Griffin, has been placed on a nurse mare.
The 2011 Washington champion two-year-old filly was bred by Dale Mahlum, who had purchased her dam, 2003 Washington older filly or mare Infernal McGoon, from Jody Peetz's consignment at the 2008 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale while carrying the future stakes winner. Peetz had purchased Infernal McGoon as a yearling at the 2000 WTBOA Summer Yearling Sale from her breeders John and Doris Konecny - who bred and raced her champion dam Flame McGoon.
Infernal McGoon, a daughter of Wekiva Springs won both the Emerald Breeders' Distaff and Belle Roberts Stakes and earned $153,965 for Peetz's One Horse Will Do Corporation. Peetz also bred Infernal McGoon's first three foals and later would purchase Talk to My Lawyer from Mahlum's consignment at the 2010 WTBOA Summer Sale.
Trained by Chris Stenslie, Talk to My Lawyer placed in both the Angie C. and Barbara Shinpoch stakes before breaking her maiden in the 1 1/16-mile Gottstein Futurity. The chestnut filly returned to the races at three to win the mile John and Kitty Fletcher Stakes by nearly four lengths. She also won a 5 1/2-furlong allowance/$25,000 optional claiming (N) race that season and retired with earnings of $89,166.
Talk to My Lawyer produced her first foal in 2014, a filly by Flatter who has been retained by Peetz.
