Emerald Downs Announces Horsemen Incentives for 2015

In their January 9, 2015, press release, Emerald Downs announced several new initiatives, including the larger purses and lower costs that will greet horsemen for the 2015 live racing season at the Auburn racing oval.

The track announced several incentives to complement last month's announcement that daily purse distribution would increase approximately 20 percent for the 70-day meet that runs April 18 through September 27.
The new Trainer Participation Incentive Program includes: Early-Bird Move-In Bonus (February-May), reduced start-up costs (first eight bags of bedding per stall provided) and lower fees on both dorm rentals and mechanical hot-walkers. Also, trainers have the opportunity to recover up to 100 percent of per stall per day costs based on a stall efficiency factor and conservation of utilities.
"After many years of increased expenses for trainers and owners, we're grateful to be involved in creating positive incentives that deliver good economic news to horsemen," said Washington Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association Executive Director MaryAnn O'Connell.
"A program that translates cost savings and productive participation directly into bonus dollars for horsemen is empowering as it fosters and rewards a team effort for success of the new ownership."
The 2015 season marks the 20th season of live racing at Emerald Downs. The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe is actively working towards acquiring the track. The Tribe is currently working on the required WHRC license application to own and operate Emerald Downs and its off-track wagering facilities.
In addition to the 20 percent increase in average daily overnight purses, every unplaced starter will receive a $200 participation fee (up from $125) and horses competing in races at 1 1/16 miles or longer will be offered additional purse money.
Emerald Downs' stable area opens Saturday, January 31 and training begins Monday, February 2. Stall applications are available online at
emeralddowns.com in the horsemen section.

Washington-connected Horses Score Graded Wins on Santa Anita's 2014-15 Opening Card

Washington owners Dr. Mark Dedomenico and Dr. George Todaro, trainer Blaine Wright and jockey Tyler Baze all had reasons to smile on December 26 as horses they were connected with won all three of the graded stakes run on the 2014-15 opening card at Santa Anita Park.

Dedomenico and Todaro got the day off to a good start with three-year-old Sam's Sister, who took the $301,000 La Brea Stakes by a half-length over race favorite Taris. The first Grade 1 winner for Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Brother Derek, Sam's Sister is a Kentucky-bred daughter of the stakes-placed Include mare Kittery Point.  Co-owned and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Sam's Sister has won four of her five starts and earned $307,450.

Peter Redekop BC. Ltd's recently-crowned 2014 British Columbia Horse of the Year Alert Bay earned his fourth consecutive stakes win and third graded tally in the Grade 2, $201,250 Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes. The California-bred three-year-old gelding by City Zip-Hickory (Chi), by Dushyantor, who is trained by Wright and was ridden by Baze, improved his stellar record to 7-4-1 from 13 starts and upped his earnings to $617,207.

Todaro and partners' 2013 champion two-year-old male Shared Belief came back from his lone career defeat (a fourth place finish the Breeders' Cup Classic [G1] after a much troubled trip) to score his eighth victory in the $301,000 Malibu Stakes (G1). The odds-on favorite in the seven-panel race, Shared Belief finished a neck the better of Conquest Two Step, while giving that rival five pounds. Ridden by Mike Smith and trained by co-partner Jerry Hollendorfer, Shared Belief, a gelded son of Candy Ride (Arg)-Common Hope, by Storm Cat, has earned $2,032,200.

WTBOA Sales Graduates in the News

Janene Maryanski, Gerald Schneider and trainer Blaine Wright's Bar Doncella became the eighth winner from the first Washington crop (foals of 2012) of Pulse Ranches' Preachinatthebar when the half-sister to stakes winners Spanish Highway and Ashby Hill took a $25,000 maiden claiming race at Golden Gate Fields on January 1. The new winner, a daughter of the El Prado (Ire) mare Pardo's Joy, was bred in Washington by Terry and Mary Lou Griffin.

Trainer Frank Lucarelli, Custom Truck Accessories, and Scott and Tom Nelson's Can't Get Enough, a 2011 Washington-bred son of Harbor the Gold-Silver City Lilly, by Tiffany Ice, improved his race record to 5-3-3 from 14 starts after taking a $10,000 claiming race at Turf Paradise by 2 1/4 lengths on December 31. Bred by Bar C Racing Stables Inc., Can't Get Enough, who was claimed out of the race by trainer Robertino Diddoro, has earned $49,930.

Lotta Attitude, a four-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Sharp Humor-Kickin' the Clouds, by Dixieland Band, improved her race record to 3-2-2 in ten starts after taking a $25,000 claiming race by 5 1/4 lengths on January 1 at Santa Anita Park, pushing her winnings to $67,943.

Art McFadden's Oregon Stater took his second Portland Meadows allowance win on January 6 with a 3 3/4-length victory in the six-furlong race. The four-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Officer-Feng Shui, by French Deputy, who is trained by Jim Fergason, had broken his maiden at Emerald Downs last September.

Portland Stakes Results and Other News

After having to cancel racing on December 30 due to unsafe track conditions, Portland Meadows ran a nine-race card on New Year's Day, led by a trio of $9,000 "Lake" handicaps.

The mile East Lake Handicap, for newly turned three-year-olds, featured a five-horse field led by .05-to-one favorite Oh Derek, a multiple stakes-winning son of Brother Derek raced by David Gregory. But this time around, Karen Kirshner's 13-to-one longshot Cash N Dash, who is trained by Robert Baze and was ridden by Jake Samuels, drew off to defeat that runner by 3 1/2 lengths in a time of 1:42.68 over a fast track. Jim Fergason and Jeri Johnson's That's No Bull, by Bernstein, finished another 2 1/4 lengths back in third place. Cash N Dash was bred in Washington by Prisco Vacca. It marked the second win for the gelded son of Gibson Thoroughbred Farms' Parker's Storm Cat-Bon Jour Paris, by Eltish.

Lawrence O'Brine and Marvin Pietila's five-year-old mare Society Girl, the odds-on favorite, took her third Portland stakes in the mile Crescent Lake Stakes for older fillies, defeating Rancho Viejo's Seventyprcentcocoa, by Private Gold, by a neck. Pinot Noir Stables' Pala Blanca, by Modigliani, finished nearly 12 lengths behind them in third. Trained by Jim Fergason and ridden by Jorge Rosales, Society Girl, who finished the race in 1:41.89, is a Washington-bred daughter of Soft Gold (Brz). Out of multiple stakes producer Crimson Date, Society Girl has a record of 7-2-1 from 14 starts and has earned $43,936.

The final stakes on the card was the Crater Lake Handicap, also at a mile, for four-year-old and up runners. Jacqueline Smith-trained and -owned Sportive, at 22-to-one odds, defeated trainer Rodina Barrett and Wayne Williams' Johnski, by Lion Hearted, by three-quarters of a length with Rancho Viejo and Hernan Torres' Stoney River, by Grindstone, in the show spot. Sportive, an eight-year-old California-bred son of Bellamy Road-Party Mode, by Quiet American, improved his record to 16-13-10 from 48 starts and has earned $82,852. Javier Matias was aboard the winner for his 1:39.68 win.

Also on the Thursday card was a five-furlong maiden special weight race which was taken by Peggy Buckley and trainer Sharon Balcom's homebred filly Golden Storm Cat. The three-year-old Oregon-bred is the sixth winner from the 2012 crop of Parker's Storm Cat and is out of the Awesome Again mare Golden Larkspur. The filly was one of three winners ridden by Matias on the card.

In early January the Oregon Racing Commission approved the addition of a Monday, February 9, live race day to make up for the lost late December card.

Portland Meadows announced that effective January 4, 2015, Travis Demers had been named the new track announcer. Demers is a 12-year radio veteran who spent ten years as a host and anchor with ESPN Sports Radio 1080 The FAN in Portland, Oregon. Demers has extensive experience in television as well, hosting various shows on Comcast SportsNet Northwest, including Trail Blazers Pulse and Portland Meadows: Horse Racing Live. He has been a part of live horse racing broadcasts at Portland Meadows and Emerald Downs as a show host, reporter and analyst.

The 14-year-old mare, which is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and sire Toccet and from the immediate family of 2014 Emerald Downs champion juvenile filly Ethan's Baby, had been bred to Power Broker, a Grade 1-winning son of Pulpit.

2014 Washington Oaks winner Lady Fifty Two, who raced for the partnership of Drs. George Todaro and Mark Dedomenico and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, sold as a broodmare prospect for $70,000. The $83,352 earning daughter of Kodiak Kowboy is a half-sister to Todaro- and Hollendorfer-raced Grade 1 winner Lady of Fifty.

The Blood-Horse Integrates MarketWatch into Magazine

Beginning in the January 10, 2015, issue, The Blood-Horse will include content previously found in its Thoroughbred professional newsletter, MarketWatch, as a regular monthly feature in its print and digital editions.

The change comes as The Blood-Horse and MarketWatch move toward improving coverage of the professional Thoroughbred market. The 16- to 20-page monthly section will continue to provide analysis of Thoroughbred auction and sales statistics, sire and breeding analysis, pedigree analysis and other important industry data, as well as several new features.

"We never stop monitoring the balance of content in the weekly magazine and the way it meets the needs of our readers," said Eric Mitchell, editor-in-chief of The Blood-Horse. "And what we've heard most recently is a growing desire for more professionally oriented content - more analysis and more statistics to help owners and breeders make smarter business decisions. We will now provide this much-needed information compiled monthly by MarketWatch as bonus content in The Blood-Horse."

The first integrated issue features an analysis of the 2015 stallion market by longtime MarketWatch contributor and economist Dr. Robert Losey, as well as a yearling market analysis by regular Blood-Horse columnist and economist Bill Shanklin. Tom LaMarra, online content editor for BloodHorse.com, contributes discussion on foal crop and its impact on racing, as well as the industry's challenges for maintaining betting handle and purses. James McHale, a market analyst based in England, looks at the valuation of European stallions compared to their Kentucky counterparts. In the coming months The Blood-Horse will continue to present engaging content in the new section.

Upcoming features on the editorial calendar include an analysis of freshman sires and yearling price distribution, a look at the relationship between the Equibase Speed Figures for two-year-olds and the performance of these horses through the Triple Crown, and a comparison of maiden winners at Saratoga with those at Del Mar. Besides these unique analyses, MarketWatch will continue to offer the in-depth statistics and charts that provide valuable insight into the auction seasons for two-year-olds in training, yearlings, and the mixed sale markets for weanlings and broodmares.

"We're very excited to provide MarketWatch content to a broader audience in the pages of The Blood-Horse magazine," MarketWatch editor Ian Tapp said. "By combining MarketWatch's data and analysis with The Blood-Horse's breeding and racing features, the result is an even more valuable tool for Thoroughbred industry professionals."

The first MarketWatch section in The Blood-Horse can be downloaded at no cost by visiting BloodHorse.com/MarketWatchJAN.

OwnerView: 2016 Thoroughbred Owners Conference Set for Gulfstream Park

OwnerView, the website and information resource developed by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) to assist both current and prospective Thoroughbred owners, announced today that it will hold its second national Thoroughbred Owners Conference in January 2016 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Florida.

The conference will be held during the week leading up to the 45th Annual Eclipse Awards dinner, which is scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2016.

"The Stronach Group was extremely proud to be one of the presenting sponsors of the inaugural National Thoroughbred Owners Conference back in October and we're thrilled to showcase our Gulfstream Park facility and the South Florida area by hosting this new and important event in 2016," said Mike Rogers, president of The Stronach Group's Racing and Gaming Division.

The first conference featured panel discussions with prominent industry participants and several informational and educational networking events with owners and industry representatives. It was held at the Keeneland sales pavilion and attracted approximately 300 attendees. (A video replay of the conference is available at ownerview.com and also by clicking the green banner at wtboa.com.)

"We were extremely honored to play host to the first national Thoroughbred Owners Conference and our staff looks forward to collaborating with OwnerView and Gulfstream Park personnel to ensure a seamless transition and another successful event," said Bill Thomason, president and chief executive officer of Keeneland.

"The feedback from those who attended the first conference has been universally positive and those people, as well as others who did not attend, have been asking about when and where the next owner conference would take place," said Gary Falter, vice president of operations for OwnerView. "While the topics, speakers and sponsors will be finalized and announced in the months ahead, we thought it would be beneficial to at least announce the date and location so prospective attendees can put it on their calendars."

OwnerView is a joint effort spearheaded by The Jockey Club and TOBA to encourage ownership of Thoroughbreds and provide accurate information on trainers, public racing syndicates, the process of purchasing and owning a Thoroughbred, racehorse retirement and owner licensing.

The need for a central resource to encourage Thoroughbred ownership was identified in the comprehensive economic study of the sport that was commissioned by The Jockey Club and conducted by McKinsey & Company in 2011. The OwnerView site was launched in May 2012.

Additional information about OwnerView is available at ownerview.com or by contacting Gary Falter at gfalter@jockeyclub.com or (859) 224-2803.

In Memoriam

Gerald "Jerry" Allen Many

Former WTBOA member and longtime Eastern Washington horseman Jerry Many, 69, passed away on October 26, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.

He was born on March 8, 1945, in Yakima to Gerald "Pete" and Patricia Many.

At an early age Jerry discovered the great outdoors, which led to his lifelong passions of hunting and fishing and helped to create numerous friendships and an encyclopedia of stories which were nothing short of legendary. Jerry never missed an opening day of hunting or fishing season for over 50 years. He spent many a day in the wheat draws outside of Colfax or fishing with his buddies at Loon Lake.

His first entry into horse racing was with his cousins' Quarter Horse runners, which led him to racing his own stock. After discovering Thoroughbreds, he and his wife Carol raced at Playfair, Yakima Meadows and Longacres. Among the many winners he and Carol either bred and/or raced was 1993 Emerald Racing Association (Yakima Meadows) three-year-old filly champion Break My Heart, a daughter of Star de Naskra who won the Belle Roberts Handicap, Seafair Queen Stakes and Washington Oaks for the Manys' One to Many Stables and the Friendship Stables of trainer Bonnie Jenne and her husband Wally. The Manys also bred I'maknightschoice, who won the All West Fillies Futurity at Playfair in 1994.

Jerry became involved with Thoroughbreds at every level, including being part of the HBPA at Playfair. He and Carol had a small farm outside of Colbert where he fully immersed himself in the "Sport of Kings."

Carol, who also loved the horses, trained dogs in AKC obedience and was a high school teacher for over 20 years until she passed away in 1998 at age 53.

Jerry worked for many years as the manufacturer's representative for Many Gift Ideas.

He was known for his ability to make those around him laugh and enjoy themselves, no matter what the situation. His positive personality was a true inspiration and influence to everyone who knew him.

In addition, longtime industry member Stuart Flax passed away late last year. An obituary will be published when more information becomes available.

Marva Jean

2005 Washington champion older filly or mare Marva Jean died on January 3, 2015, from the results of a paddock accident. The Harbor the Gold foal she was due to deliver at the end of the month was also lost.

Bred by Dale Mahlum, Marva Jean, who was foaled on April 7, 2000, was the first of six stakes horses out of Beulah Park stakes winner Chasseur Dame, a 1992 daughter of French Legionaire who won nine races and earned $110,405. In addition to Marva Jean, Chasseur Dame produced $172,108 minor stakes winner Sax Notes and Angie C. Stakes winner Melba Jewel ($123,970).

Purchased by Chris and Diana Randall for $12,500 at the WTBOA Summer Yearling Sale, the chestnut distaffer was trained by Frank Lucarelli throughout her 31-race career. The daughter of West by West was stakes-placed at two and four before coming into her own at five when she reeled off victories in a trio of Emerald Downs stakes: the Hastings Park, Washington State Legislators and Betsy Ross handicaps. Marva Jean amassed a record of 7-4-5 and earnings of $144,530 during her five seasons at the track.

Marva Jean produced her first three foals for Chris Randall, including $74,155 earner and 12-race winner Marvin's Magic, a 2008 gelding by Aptitude; and $18,099 earner All My Friends, a 2009 gelding by Delineator. Her 2012 offspring, the Bellamy Road gelding Raspberry Road, ran fifth behind future Gottstein Futurity winner Prime Engine in an Emerald maiden special weight race in his only outing last year. Both Raspberry Road and his year-younger half-sister Mo'orea Island, a daughter of sprint champion Midnight Lute, were bred in partnership by William Brewer's Brewer Thoroughbreds LLC and Terry and Mary Lou Griffin and raised at the Griffins' Buckley-based Griffin Place.
