Emerald Notes

Fast Tracks

After his two earlier dominating performances, REV Racing's latest racing star, Trackattacker, was geared and ready to add win number three in the $50,000 WTBOA Lads Stakes run on August 16. The prohibitive morning line favorite for the 6 1/2-panel stakes, two-year-old Trackattacker has grabbed a lot of attention as he continues his fast track to racing stardom.

A field of four other juvenile males met the Frank Lucarelli trainee in the paddock, including recent winner Moby. By the time the half-dozen sprang loose at the starter's signal, Trackattacker was once more bet down to five cents on the dollar, just as he had been in the Emerald Express Stakes nearly four weeks earlier.

Again partnered with Leslie Mawing in the saddle, Trackattacker "sprinted clear at the outset" - even though he was racing wide - "increased his margin into the lane . . . and was never threatened" as he drew off to a seven-length win and yet another stakes record (1:16.19) to impress his growing colony of fans.

"He's a strong horse and he was pretty much the giant in this race," said Mawing, who has now won nine of the first 17 stakes contested during the 2014 meet. "I just wanted to extend his stride and let him run free. I also wanted to see what I had under me; and he had a lot left.

"He's at the top of the list of two-year-olds I've ever ridden," the 2014 meet leading rider added.

Roy Lumm trainees Moby (Harbor the Gold-Last Thoughts), who races for Blue Diamond Stable and Janet Johnson; and Private Boss (Private Gold-Irene's Bonus Baby), who runs in the colors of Delbert J. Kelly, Mort Robbins and Lumm, controlled the place and show spots, with Moby finishing 3 3/4 lengths in front of his stablemate.

In addition to his one track and two stakes records, Trackattacker is the only horse in Emerald history to pay $2.10, $2.10 and $2.10 for win, place and show bets- and he's done that twice (and was the shortest morning line favorite in the Auburn track's history for his latest outing).

Bred by longtime Washington breeders Dr. Duane and Susan Hopp, of Graham, Trackattacker was purchased by Roy and Ellie Schaefer for $25,000 out of the Hopps' Castlegate Farm 2013 consignment to the WTBOA September sale. The now $59,318 winner is out of multiple stakes-placed Eclatante, who has a colt by Lucky Pulpit (Hip 16) consigned to the August 26, WTBOA sale.

According to Lucarelli, the impressive gelding will make his next start in the Daily Racing Form Dennis Dodge Stakes on the September 7 Washington Cup card and then come back for the $65,000 Gottstein Futurity run three weeks later.

Pippa Passes

The 33rd running of the $50,000 Barbara Shinpoch Stakes, on August 17, brought a field of seven juvenile fillies together to contest the 6 1/2-furlong race. With Angie C. Stakes winner Ethan's Baby sidelined with sore shins, John and Janene Maryanski's Seeking the Light (Heatseeker [Ire]-Brightest), who had run third in the Angie C. after impressively winning a June maiden special weight race by nearly four lengths, went off the race favorite at nine-to-ten odds.

Seeking the Light set the early fractions and was still leading by a half-length at the stretch call. Meanwhile, Pippa Bou Peep - ridden by Eliska Kubinova - was content to lay a couple of lengths off the leader's pace until she steadily came to terms with her rival, and in a prolonged drive down the stretch, nailed the win by a head. It marked the first stakes victory for the 25-year-old rider from the Czech Republic.

"I had a perfect trip," said Kubinova. "This horse is really professional and she did everything I asked of her. I wasn't 100 percent sure I was going to get there, but once I got next to the other horse, I was sure."

Vital Signs Stable's homebred Val de Saire (Harbor the Gold-Follow Your Shot) finished another four lengths back in third in a race run in 1:17.23. (Her half-sister by Abraaj sells as Hip 22 at the August 26 WTBOA sale.)

Pippa Bou Peep became the third maiden in the last five years to win the Shinpoch, joining Lady Golightly in 2010 and Sweet Saga in 2011. Pippa Bou Peep, a daughter of Harbor the Gold-Annie's Bou Peep, by  For Really, races for trainer Charles Essex and David and Linda Olson's Dave and the Little Lady Stable. She was bred by Rich and Ann Richardson and now sports a record of 1-2-2 from five starts and has earned $45,357.

Later, on the same card, Michael and Amy Feuerborn's 2013 Shinpoch winner and Washington champion Chu and You won for the fifth time in ten tries, upping the daughter of You and I's earnings to $118,279, with her eight-length win in the 6 1/2-furlong allowance/$50,000 optional claiming race.

Maximizing the Benefits of Research for Growth and Development of the Horse

When it comes to breeding, the importance of sound management and health practices play a key role in building a solid foundation toward a horse's future. Equine Guelph is pleased to offer its newly updated "Growth and Development" online course as part of its Fall 2014 line up, which has been designed to increase awareness by incorporating the advances in research and evolving management practices for the broodmare and stallion.

"The Growth and Development course will eliminate all the old wives' tales and myths, and replace tradition with hard facts from research and development," said course instructor Doug Nash, who served as farm manager at Glengate Farms in Campbellville, Ontario, for almost 30 years. "It will also bring those same people up to date with the latest technology, nutrition and methods used today by the professionals of the trade, through class discussion and the use of guest speakers, as well as the new audio/visuals and revised textbook."

Offered as a 12-week online course through the University of Guelph in September, key topics include examining barn and breeding facilities, property location and renovation of an existing facility, water sources and quality, bio-security, nutrition, and animal conditioning for reproduction, as well as encompassing all aspects of reproduction and sound management practices prior to conception and beyond. The course will also consist of video interviews with experienced industry breeders; along with video demonstrations of preparing for semen collection and new technological advances such as embryo transfer.

"This is a course for anyone who might be contemplating horse ownership and breeding, as well as future veterinarians considering large animal practice, and veterinarian assistants," said Nash. "It would also benefit those working in the production for sales of equine breeding supplies and building design for the horse industry, as well as the area of bio-security with regard to producing or selling mare and foal feeds, supplements and milk replacers and those boarding mares and foals as a profession or producing weanlings to yearlings for sale or training."

Registration for Equine Guelph's Fall 2014 semester is now open with courses beginning on September 15, 2014. Other Fall course offerings include Management of the Equine Environment, Equine Health and Disease Prevention, Equine Nutrition, Equine Functional Anatomy, Equine Business Management, Stewardship of the Equine Environment, Equine Journalism, Advanced Equine Functional Anatomy, and Advanced Equine Behaviour.

More information can be found at www.EquineStudiesOnline.ca or by contacting Open Learning and Educational Support at info@OpenEd.uoguelph.ca or (519) 767-5000.

Equine Guelph is the horse owners' and care givers' Centre at the University of Guelph. Thoro-Graph, Equibase Announce Expanded Availability of Sheets Products

Thoro-Graph and Equibase Company LLC announced on August 20, 2014, that the Thoro-Graph Sheets, used by serious handicappers and horsemen, and Thoro-Quick, an abridged version designed for simulcast players, are now available on equibase.com.

The Equibase website was recently redesigned with a multi-homepage concept including several new features designed specifically for new/casual fans, regular visitors, and seasoned players/expert handicappers.

"Equibase has been the go-to source for racing information for years," said Thoro-Graph President Jerry Brown. "With the new site, it now has a better platform in which to cater to the advanced horseplayer and it makes sense for our sophisticated products to be available there."

Each number on a Thoro-Graph Sheet for a horse represents a performance rating arrived at by using the time of the race, beaten lengths, ground lost or saved on the turns, weight carried, and any effects of wind. A lower rating indicates a better performance.

The Thoro-Quick product is formatted to provide data for three horses per page.

"The Thoro-Graph Sheets are a valuable handicapping tool for high-end handicappers," said Hank Zeitlin, president and chief operating officer for Equibase. "Serious players who get the racing information they need at equibase.com will now have easy access to these valuable handicapping products."

Thoro-Graph produces proprietary numbers that can be found in their full line of Sheets products and other premium handicapping information. In addition, Thoro-Graph provides a full range of services for the Thoroughbred industry, including consultation and management services for horsemen. Additional information about the company is available at thorograph.com.

News from The Jockey Club

The Jockey Club Enhanced Digital Photo Upload

The Jockey Club has introduced an enhancement to their popular Digital Photo Upload, both for the desktop and mobile user, which is designed to allow submission of photos for registration related processes more efficiently.
Similar to file and photo sharing features within Facebook and Dropbox, you will now have the option to "drag and drop" multiple photo files for quicker uploads, in addition to the current method of uploading one photo at a time.
Secondly, we have enabled mobile users to seamlessly access the photos on their device when submitting pictures at
registry.jockeyclub.com. Similar to most mobile photo Apps, you need only tap the photos you wish to upload when prompted.
Lastly, we have now added the ability to submit digital photos for in-process requests for Duplicate Certificates of Foal Registration and DNA typing cases. You will find these options when accessing Digital Photo Upload.
These new features will further ensure that uploading registration photos is an efficient, convenient, and easy process, especially when doing so from an iPhone, iPad or Android device
