WTBOA Sales Graduates in the News

   Kama'aina Thoroughbreds' Madam Pele won a six-furlong allowance by 2 1/2 lengths at Turf Paradise on February 8. It was the third win for the four-year-old daughter of Salt Lake-Striking Scholar, by Smart Strike, and upped the Char Clark Thoroughbreds-bred filly's earnings to $83,760.

   Washington-bred Our Revolution won a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race at Rillito on February 9. Bred by Rick and Debbie Pabst, the new three-year-old winner is a gelded son of Harbor the Gold out of the stakes-winning Free At Last mare Freedom March.

   In her first 2014 start, Ron Crockett Inc.'s Spot On Babe went gate-to-wire to take a 5 1/2 furlong $12,500 claiming race at Golden Gate Fields on February13. Bred in Washington by Nina and Ron Hagen, it marked the second win in two starts for the four-year-old daughter of Tribal Rule out of the stakes-winning Free At Last mare Irene's Bonus Baby who is trained by Frank Lucarelli.

   WTBOA Sales headliner and three-time Grade 1 winner Smiling Tiger appeared on the cover of the February 2014 California Thoroughbred as well as in an article in that same edition titled "Premier Thoroughbreds: The New Kids on the Block."

2014 WTBOA Officers Elected

   The WTBOA board of directors elected officers at their February 13 meeting. Dana Halvorson, who has served at the association's helm since 2008, was again elected at president. William Brewer steps into his second term as first vice president. Darrin Paul is the new second vice president. Rosalia DiPietro will serve as secretary/treasurer and Debbie Pabst and Mary Lou Griffin were chosen to serve with DiPietro on the finance committee.

Atta Boy Roy Sires First Foals

   Three-time Washington champion and Grade 2 stakes winner Atta Boy Roy's first foal was born on February 8, 2014, at Terry and Mary Lou Griffin's Griffin Place in Buckley. The colt, which is out of the $127,121 stakes-winning Silver Ghost mare Silver Screen Girl, was bred by the Griffins and Ken and Marleen Alhadeff's Elttaes Stable.

   Silver Screen Girl has produced four winners from her first five foals of racing age, including $50,000-plus earners Silver Lake Max and Aaron the Baron.

   Ken Mile's stakes-placed Pentelicus mare Time for Magic dropped Atta Boy Roy's second foal on February 11. The filly, who was also born at Griffin Place, is a half-sister to $98,700 stakes-placed Slim Pickins and winner Athina Lee.

   Atta Boy Roy, who entered stud at Rick and Debbie Pabst's Blue Ribbon Farm last spring, was among the nation's top sprinters in 2009 and 2010. Among his 14 wins and nine seconds and thirds were 11 stakes placements, led by his victories in the Churchill Downs Stakes (G2), Remington Park Sprint Cup Stakes, Governor's Handicap and Shot of Gold Stakes. A half-brother to Washington horse of the year and Longacres Mile (G3) winner The Great Face, Atta Boy Roy earned $602,276 over his seven-year career.

Washington Thoroughbred Foundation Now Linked to Fred Meyer Community Rewards

   Fred Meyer, which opened its first one-stop shopping store in Portland, Oregon, in 1922, recently established the Fred Meyer Community Rewards program, "where shopping and giving unite."

   If you are a Fred Meyer Rewards Card customer, you can link your card to the new program in which Fred Meyer will donate $2.5-million each year and up to $625,000 each quarter, to local schools, organizations and non-profits like the Washington Thoroughbred Foundation (WTF). By linking your Rewards Card with the WTF, every time you shop at Fred Meyer and use your card, a donation will be made by Fred Meyer to the Foundation.

Other News

   On February 9, two-time champion female sprinter Groupie Doll finished her race career for new owner Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm with a commanding seven-length win in the $200,000 Hurricane Bertie Stakes (G3) held at Gulfstream Park The six-year-old mare, who is booked to Tapit, earned $2,648,850 over 23 starts with a 12-4-4 record. The daughter of Bowman's Mill is out of the Deputy Minister mare Deputy Doll - a half-sister to Seawind Stables LLC's (Russell Moore) 1997 Emerald Downs stakes winner and Washington sire Russellthemussell.

   Dr. George Todaro, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and Rick Awtrey's stakes winner and Grade 1-placed four-year-old Fury Kapcori (Tiznow-Gin Running, by Go for Gin) took his fourth win in a mile allowance at Santa Anita on February 7. The 2 1/4 length victory increased his earnings to $373,080.

   Four-year-old Ethan's Way, a Washington-bred son of You and I out of Shawn's Hope, by Liberty Gold, won a four-furlong maiden special weight race by 3 1/4 lengths at Rillito on February 8. The new winner was bred by Todd and Shawn Hansen.
   Ten Broeck Farm Inc.'s Warm Breeze, a four-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Street Sense-Cry Me a River, by Gilded Time, trained by Grant Forster, won the $60,000 Happy Ticket Stakes at Fair Grounds on February 1. It was the third win for the filly which won her first race at Indiana Downs last summer and increased the earnings for the half-sister to stakes winner Mint Slewlep to $94,396.

2014 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale

   Though no Washington buyers were noted at the two-day sale held on February 9-10, 2014, a few horses with Washington connections were cataloged among the 588 cataloged and 406 sold at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale. While the median rose from $15,000 to $16,000 for the sale, the average plummeted from $56,252 in 2013 to $33,319 in 2014. The RNA rate for the 2014 venue was 19.6 percent.

   Two winning mares, stakes-placed Among the Willows, by Brahms, and $104,130 winner Ubelongtomemissy, by Belong to Me, who are half-sisters to 2013 Champagne Stakes (G1) winner Havana and Pat and Mullen Chinn's broodmare Follow Your Shot, sold for $40,000 and $117,000, respectively.

   A yearling filly by Bernardini out of Grade 3 winner Bohemian Lady, and from the immediate family of Washington horse of the year Hooplah, sold for $200,000. Another from that female line, the $100,148 earning Cherokee Run mare Run Lady Run, whose dam is a half-sister to Eclipse Award winner Phone Chatter, was sold as a broodmare prospect.

   Also noted as selling were a Horse Greeley yearling colt whose second dam is Washington-bred winner Laurel Leaf, a half-sister to Washington-bred stakes winner Late Sailing; and broodmare Honeymoon Baby, by Lemon Drop Kid, whose stakes-producing dam is a half-sister to Washington-bred stakes winner Deputy Sue.

   Among the RNAs was 2013 Washington champion two-year-old filly Finding More, who was listed as unsold at $47,000, and a yearling Tiz Wonderful colt who is a half-brother to Michael and Amy Feuerborn's Emerald Downs champion racemare A Classic Life, who in turn foaled 2012 Emerald horse of the meet Class Included, who was unsold at $39,000.

   Breeders' Awards and Owners' Bonus checks were mailed out from the Washington Horse Racing Commission in mid-November. If you did not receive your check or have questions about year-end tax information, please call the Commission office at (360) 459-6462.
