Washington Owners Accept 2013 Eclipse Awards

The 43rd Eclipse Award ceremonies were held on Saturday, January 18, 2014, at Gulfstream Park in Florida.

For the second straight year Wise Dan was named Horse of the year, champion older male and turf horse.  His 2013 record, which was highlighted by four Grade 1 wins, was 6-1-0 from seven outings with $2,751,972 of the 2007 gelded son of Wiseman's Ferry's $6,293,610 total earned last year.

Both of the year's two-year-old division winners are co-owned by Washingtonians and one was bred by Oregonian Dr. Rodney Orr.

Mark Dedomenico, Allen Aldrich, Lisa Hernandez, Stuart Downey, Philip Lebherz and trainer Jeff Bonde-owned Grade 1 winner She's a Tiger, who was bred by Orr, earned 212 of the 246 first-place votes in her division and was named the champion two-year-old filly. The daughter of Tale of the Cat out of Emerald Downs stakes winner Shandra Smiles won the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes and finished first, though later demoted to second, in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). The three-quarter sister to millionaire WTBOA poster boy and three-time Grade 1 winner Smiling Tiger, who was also bred by Orr and trained by Bonde, officially finished her first season of racing with three wins and three seconds from six starts and $725,650 in earnings.

Shandra Smiles produced a filly from the first crop of three-time champion Gio Ponti in 2013 and was returned to champion racehorse and sire Giant's Causeway.

She's a Tiger is the second national champion for Dedomenico who also raced in partnership 2010 champion three-year-old filly, five-time Grade 1 winner and $3.2-million earner Blind Luck.

Smiling Tiger, who will enter stud this year, was featured in an article in the West Coast section of the January 11, 2014, The Blood-Horse, titled "Roaring Back: Smiling Tiger Keys Upswing at Premier Thoroughbreds."

Unbeaten Shared Belief, a son of Candy Ride (Arg), whose two graded stakes wins - in the Grade 3 Hollywood Preview Stakes and Grade 1 CashCall Futurity, came post Breeders' Cup World Championships - received 115 of the first place votes in his division and 16 more than second place New Year's Day, who won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). Shared Belief, who won his three races by a combined 19 1/2 lengths, races for the partnership of television sports talk show host Jim Rome's Jungle Racing, Kevin Nish's KMN Racing, Jason Litt, Alex Solis II, Seattle-based Dr. George Todaro and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

Foxwoods Champagne Stakes (G1) winner Havana, who finished second to New Year's Day in the Juvenile, got the third most votes - 24. From the first crop of Belmont Stakes (G1) runner-up Dunkirk, Havana is out of $103,283 winner Missy Turtle, a half-sister to a trio of stakes horses and $51,367 earner Follow Your Shot, who is owned by Pat and Mullen Chinn's Vital Signs Stable and produced two-year-old Fragrant Harbor, who won at Emerald Downs last year.

2012 Eclipse Award winners Beholder and Groupie Doll repeated with 2013 honors. Beholder, a three-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes, was a decisive winner of the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) among her four Grade 1 wins last year and earned 207 first-place votes. In the beaten field for the Distaff were Royal Delta - who would receive her third Eclipse Award - and sophomore filly runner-up Princess of Sylmar. The now two- and-three-year-old filly champion Beholder is out of $187,014 stakes winner Leslie's Lady, a granddaughter of Washington broodmare One Last Bird, the dam of $311,152 Washington-bred stakes winner and Grade 3-placed WTBOA sales graduate Melanyhasthepapers.

Groupie Doll took the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) for the second year in a row and earned her second female sprinter title with 192 first-place votes. The daughter of Bowman's Mill, who has won 11 of her 22 starts and earned $2,528,850, is out of the Deputy Minister mare Deputy Doll - a half-sister to Seawind Stables LLC's (Russell Moore) 1997 Emerald Downs stakes winner and Washington sire Russellthemussell.

National and Washington Racing Hall of Fame rider Gary Stevens, who made a spectacular racing comeback in 2013, lost the jockey title to Javier Castellano, who recorded a $26,213,507 record-breaking season.

Ron Crockett Receives 2013 Paul Allen Sports Citizen Award

Emerald Downs President Ron Crockett received the Paul Allen Sports Citizen Award at the 79th MTR Sports Star of the Year Awards, held at Seattle's Benaroya Hall on February 22. Created by Royal Brougham and the Seattle P-I in 1936, the event offers an awards presentation which showcases the athletes, coaches, executives, philanthropists and stories of 2013.

Former University of Washington basketball star Quincy Pondexter, whom Crockett mentored during his four years with the Huskies, and Crockett's 10-year-old granddaughter Lauren Slavin introduced Crockett. A video tribute offered congratulations from a diverse list of subjects including UW athletic director Scott Woodward, Washington HBPA President Ron Maus, Husky tailback Deontae Cooper and officials from Seattle Children's Hospital.

The prestigious award is given annually to an individual who has made a significant or compelling philanthropic contribution. In addition to building and guiding Emerald Downs, Crockett is a longtime benefactor of Seattle Children's Hospital and played a leadership role in raising $50-million for the renovation of Husky Stadium.
In accepting the award, Crockett thanked his wife Wanda, and talked about growing up and attending Renton High School and receiving the McCurdy Scholarship that enabled him to attend the University of Washington, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. Crockett later founded and owned Tramco, which performs maintenance and modification of airliners, until selling it in1988.
Crockett believes in philanthropy and is a strong supporter of the UW scholarship program, giving back to his alma mater.
"I attribute my success to my early environment and heredity - thanks to my parents for that -- and schooling," Crockett said. "Your greatest asset is your health, take care of that."
Other winners included filmmaker Warren Miller (Keith Jackson Award), Zack Lystedt (Seattle Children's Hospital Inspirational Youth Award) and longtime WSU baseball coach Bobo Brayton (Royal Brougham Legends Award).
UW Volleyball player Krista Vansant was voted Female Sports Star of the Year, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was voted Male Sports Star of the Year and the Eastlake Little League team of Sammamish won the Sports Story of the Year.
