2013 Breeders' Cup World Championships

The 30th running of the Breeders' Cup World Championship races will be held at Santa Anita Park on Friday, November 1, and Saturday, November 2. A total of 172 horses have been pre-entered in the 14 races, including former Breeders' Cup champions Fort Larned, Royal Delta, Wise Dan, Little Mike, Beholder, Groupie Doll, Trinniberg, Mizdirecton and Flotilla (Fr).

Among those with connections to the Pacific Northwest, beginning with the November 1 races, are: Breeders' Cup Marathon (G2), $369,552 graded stakes winner Blueskiesnrainbow (2009, English Channel-Cho Cho San, by Deputy Minister), a son of former Gibson Thoroughbred Farm broodmare Cho Cho San; and North American Thoroughbred Horse Company Inc.'s 12-race winner and back-to-back British Columbia Premier's Handicap (G3-Can) victor Commander (2008, Broken Vow-Pout, by Deputy Minister) who takes earnings of $495,612 into the 14-furlong race.

Smarty's Echo (2011, Smarty Jones-Silver Echo, by Eastern Echo) has been cross-entered in both the Friday Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) and the Saturday Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), with preference for the Saturday race. Bred by Jerre Paxton's Northwest Farms LLC, Smarty's Echo, who is out of stakes-placed and multiple stakes producer Silver Echo, most recently ran second in the Dixiana Breeders Futurity held at Keeneland on October 5.

Trainer Vann Belvoir has multiple stakes-placed Nesso (Roman Ruler-Devotedness, by Anet) among the 17 entered in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1).

2012 champion two-year-old filly and Breeders' Cup winner Beholder (Henny Hughes-Leslie's Lady, by Tricky Creek), whose third dam was stakes-producing Washington broodmare One Last Bird, seeks to add to her record of seven wins in 11 starts and earnings of $1,970,000 in the $2-million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1), which features a small (six), but strong group of distaffers, including two-time Distaff winner Royal Delta and three-year-old filly leader Princess of Sylmar.

Mark Dedomenico, Allen Aldrich, Lisa Hernandez, Stuart Downey and Philip Lebherz-owned She's a Tiger (Tale of the Cat-Shandra Smiles, by Cahill Road), hopes to better the record of her three-quarter brother, three-time Grade 1 winner and WTBOA Sale poster boy Smiling Tiger (who has two Breeders' Cup Sprint [G1] thirds to his credit) in the November 2 $2-million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). The Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1) winner, who had run a close second in the September 28 Chandelier Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita, was bred by Dr. Rodney Orr, of Silverton, Oregon.

Wesley Ward-owned and -trained Judy the Beauty (2009, Ghostzapper-Holy Blitz, by Holy Bull), a graded stakes winner of $587,757, is in the field for the Saturday running of the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1). Also nominated for the seven-furlong race is three-time Grade 1 winner Groupie Doll (2008, Bowman's Mill-Deputy Doll, by Silver Deputy). The $1,928,850 earner's dam is a half-sister to Emerald Downs stakes winner and Washington sire Russellthemussell.

Two Grade 1 winners with connections to our state are entered for the $5-million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) which finishes the Saturday BC races. Group 1 winner Declaration of War (2009, War Front-Tempo West, by Rahy), a $1,347,281-earning half-brother to Gibson Thoroughbred Farm stallion War Power, heads the European contingent contesting the 12-furlong race. Three-time Grade 1 winner Ron the Greek (2007, Full Mandate-Flambe', by Fortunate Prospect) - who won The Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational (G1) by nearly seven lengths on September 28 - stems from the immediate family of Washington-bred stakes winners or broodmares Cielator, Sweet Saga, Cielo Dulce and retired broodmare Cielo Otono. Grade 1 winner Graydar, who is from the same family as Ron the Greek and who was also to run in the Classic or Mile, was scratched over the weekend due to a quarter crack in his left front hoof. Trainer Todd Pletcher hopes to have him ready for the Grade 1 Cigar Mile on November 30.

WTBOA Sales Graduates in the News

Six-year-old Newfound Gold, a 2007 Kentucky-bred son of Newfoundland-Binntastic, by Lyphard's Wish (Fr), went over the $100,00 mark with his victory in a $20,000 claiming race at Santa Anita on October 19.

The new winner was ridden by Gary Stevens and is trained by J. Kruljac.

Suspended jockey Tyler Baze was denied reinstatement by Santa Anita Park stewards on October 26, 2013. Baze had been arrested in July for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Circle D Racing's She's Tops, a four-year-old daughter of Woodstead Farm's He's Tops out of Love a Bull, by Bull Inthe Heather, went gate-to-wire to take a mile and 70 yard allowance test at Portland Meadows on October 27.   When three-year-old Go to Guy, by Katowice, won a maiden claimer at Turf Paradise on October 28, he became the 10th winner from 10 starters and a dozen named foals produced out of 2007 Washington broodmare of the year Nightatmisskittys, a 1991 daughter of Al Mamoon. The latest winner is a full brother to Washington champions Sundance Circle and No Constraints and also to Dandy Dora, who won three stakes at Northlands Park. Their half-sibling Strawberriesinjune won two invitational handicaps at Portland Meadows. All four stakes winners and Go to Guy were bred to Dunn Bar Ranch LLC, as was Nightatmisskittys' final foal, also sired by Katowice, the unraced two-year-old filly Grace Too.

OwnerView Launches Host Program

To enhance the information available to prospective owners of Thoroughbred racehorses, OwnerView announced in mid-October a new service called "OwnerView Host." The free service will provide a further source of basic information for people interested in owning Thoroughbred racehorses, covering topics such as business plans, ownership options, licensing, costs and expenses, and aftercare.

"There is a lot of information available to prospective owners  before they hire a trainer or make that first horse purchase, and OwnerView hosts will help them digest many of the basics of owning Thoroughbred racehorses," said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView. "We won't offer specifics on the selection of agents, trainers, and horses, but we will explain where to go, how to make contacts, and what to do to become a Thoroughbred owner."

Anyone interested in using the OwnerView Host service can fill out a form at ownerview.com available through the link, "Contact us to discuss your plans."

"When we receive a request, we will reply to the prospective owner to setup an initial discussion," Falter said. "After the introductory contact, prospective owners will have the opportunity to speak to an OwnerView host who can walk them through ownership topics at OwnerView.com and answer questions."

OwnerView was launched by The Jockey Club Information Systems Inc. and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) in May 2012, in the wake of McKinsey & Company's economic study of the sport that recommended a central resource that would encourage Thoroughbred ownership and provide accurate information about purchasing and owning a Thoroughbred. OwnerView includes information relevant to Thoroughbred owners, including information on trainers, racing syndicates, licensing, aftercare, and state incentive programs. For more information, visit OwnerView.com.

Report of Mares Bred Product Now Available from Equineline

On October 16, 2013, The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS) unveiled a new Equineline product that provides access to detailed Report of Mares Bred information on stallions that bred mares in North America. Customers can order reports on individual stallions by breeding year, commencing with 2013, or buy a subscription that provides unlimited access to all stallions for the 2013 breeding year.

"Detailed Report of Mares Bred information has never before been offered for North American stallions," said Carl Hamilton, chairman and president of TJCIS. "It is a valuable tool for stallion managers and an efficient research tool for anyone making breeding decisions by providing the most current breeding information available."

For each stallion in a selected breeding year, the report includes the name of each mare bred with the year of birth, the sire, and last reported live foal including foaling date, sex, sire, breeder and state in which the foal was bred. If a mare has not produced a foal, the report includes the name of the mare's owner when she last raced.

These reports also provide the sire's pedigree, location, inbreeding dosage, tabulated race record and lifetime statistical summaries for its progeny.

Additional information about the Report of Mares Bred service can be found at equineline.com/ReportOfMaresBred.

The Jockey Club Releases 2013 Report of Mares Bred Statistics

The Jockey Club has released Report of Mares Bred (RMB) statistics for the 2013 breeding season. Based on RMBs received through October 10, 2013, The Jockey Club reports that 1,698 stallions covered 34,174 mares in North America during 2013.

The annual statistics represent approximately 90 percent of the mares that eventually will be reported as bred in 2013. According to historical trends, The Jockey Club expects to receive RMBs representing an additional 3,000 to 4,000 mares bred during the 2013 breeding season.

The number of stallions declined 8.8 percent from the 1,861 reported at this time in 2012, and the number of mares bred fell 3.4 percent from the 35,391 reported at this time last year.

The number of stallions covering 100 or more mares increased by one, from 87 in 2012 to 88 in 2013. These stallions accounted for a greater percentage of the total mares reported bred this year - 34.0 percent of all mares bred in 2013 versus 31.9 percent of all mares bred in 2012 as reported at this time last year. RMB statistics for all reported stallions in 2013 are available through the Publications & Resources section of The Jockey Club's website at jockeyclub.com.

Further book size analysis shows a 2.9 percent increase in the number of mares bred to stallions with a book size of 100 or more in 2013 when compared to 2012 as reported at this time last year; an 11.6 percent decrease in mares bred to stallions with a book size between 75 and 99; an 11.3 percent increase in mares bred to stallions with a book size between 50 and 74; a 15.9 percent decrease in mares bred to stallions with a book size between 25 and 49; and a 5.3 percent decrease in mares bred to stallions with a book size fewer than 25.

The stallion Into Mischief led all stallions with 210 mares bred in 2013. Rounding out the top five were Archarcharch, 187; Harlan's Holiday, 187; Kitten's Joy, 184; and Majestic Warrior, 176.

Kentucky traditionally leads North America in Thoroughbred breeding activity. During 2013, Kentucky's 235 reported stallions covered 15,695 mares, or 45.9 percent of all of the mares reported bred in North America. The number of mares bred to Kentucky stallions increased 2.2 percent compared with the 15,361 reported at this time last year.

Of the top 10 states and provinces by number of mares reported bred in 2012, only Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Texas stallions covered more mares in 2013 than in 2012, as reported at this time last year.

In Memoriam

Roy Dane

Roy Dane, 96, passed away on October 10, 2013. He was born in Harrah on September 17, 1917, the only son of four children born to Paul and Marcia Dane, who had come to the Harrah area from Tacoma in 1909, long before the town was started. He went through eighth grade in Harrah School, which he said was good. He then went through high school, which he said was an absolute waste of time. He was an avid reader of non-fiction and considered himself self-educated.

His parents eventually started a feed and seed store and a feed mill. They also started a confectionery, a cream station, a barber shop and a shoe shop in Harrah, as well as owning a dairy and farming 460 acres on the side with horses as Roy was growing up.

On March 5, 1941, Roy was drafted into the US Army and served his country for five years during the World War II in Africa and Europe.

He loved birds and animals of every description, with a heavy focus on horses from the day he was born.  Roy had a special ability for breeding top horses and at one time he owned a world champion Quarter Horse stallion and also four-time leading Washington Thoroughbred sire Slewdledo.

Among the Washington Thoroughbred champions and stakes winners he bred, most in partnership with brothers Ken and/or Earl Paulson or good friend Steve Meredith, were 2004 horse of the year Demons Warlock and Grade 3 winner I'madrifter; additional stakes winners Beau Maggie, Blue Banjo; and 2005 Washington claimer of the year Slew Is King. Roy also ranked among the top Thoroughbred breeders in the state for several years.

He was a "breeder of fast horses" and his license plate read "IXL", which tells more about him than you could write in a whole book. For many years, he published the magazine Quarter Horse Northwest. He also published a book on the foundation of the Quarter Horse breed titled The Grand Twenty.

Roy also loved the outdoors and was an ardent conservationist.

He owned five vineyards at one time, growing Concord grapes for grape juice leader Welch's.

Roy was a maverick, an innovator and a nonconformist. Many times he said that if all of the people of the world started walking south, he would be walking north. Roy lived the last few years of his life up in the high country with his horses and his dog, which he dearly loved. He said many times, he didn't want to go to heaven; he just wanted to stay up there in the mountains forever.

He is survived by his nephews, Will (Ruth), Carl and Duane Patnode; nieces, Jan Taylor, Judy (Tom) Montgomery and Diane (Barney) Pizzoli; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Clifford Dean Street

Businessman and horseman C. Dean Street, 73, of Enumclaw, passed away on October 22, 2013. He was born on August 16, 1940, in Centralia.

Dean first got involved in racehorse ownership in the late 1970s. A WTBOA member since 2000, Dean successfully raced 2007 Washington plater of the year Ogieogilthorpe, a 2004 gelding by Prospected who won or placed in 14 of his 19 starts over a three-year-old period, including running third in the Trooper Seven Stakes. Street also raced and stood five-race winner Destinys Roar, a speedy son of Roar. Among his horses currently training in California is Serious Form, who won at Los Alamitos on October 27.

Street also owned five broodmares, including Stormin Kitty, whose two-year-old colt by Grindstone is named Cool Bird in honor of the Seattle Thunderbirds junior hockey team mascot of the same name. Dean was a minority owner in the Kent-based hockey team for the past 11 years. The longtime hockey fan, who had originally joined the T-birds family in 1997 as a team sponsor, was also a supporter of the Hockey Challenge.

A member of the American Quarter Horse Association, Dean was also involved in the development of the ShoWare Center in Kent.

Dean founded the Bellevue-based realty company, C. Dean Street and Associates, which specializes in helping clients buy foreclosures at auction.

He is survived by his daughters, Jackie Bergstrom and Tressa Goff; sons, Robert Street and Clifford Street; five grandsons, Jacob, Aaron, Ryan, Max and Oliver; three granddaughters, Madeleine, Danielle and Jayme; brother, Simon; and sister, Bea.

Equine In Memoriam

Well Informed

Gibson Thoroughbred Farm stallion Well Informed died in September 2013 from colic. The 13-year-old son of Unbridled originally entered stud in Arizona in 2009 before moving to the Thorp farm in late 2011. The first of his two Washington crops arrived this past spring.

Though unraced, Well Informed had great depth of pedigree. Not only was he a son of champion and leading sire Unbridled, he was a half-brother to four stakes winners, including champion Paradise Creek and two other Grade 1 winners. His dam, North of Eden (Ire), was a three-quarter sister to champion and influential sire Theatrical (Ire) and Japanese Grade 1 winner and sire Taki Blizzard.

"I think he was a once in a lifetime horse," said Patti Gibson. "He had unbelievable bloodlines, the kind of breeding that small stud farms usually don't get their hands on."
