Chu the Winner
 | Wayne Nagai Photo |
In 2011, Maple Valley residents Michael and Amy Feuerborn sent out their first Washington homebred to race at Emerald Downs and Chu and I won three races, including both the WTBOA Lads and Northwest Stallion Strong Ruler stakes en route to Washington and Emerald two-year-old male honors. Flash forward two years and Chu and I's full sister Chu and You continued to uphold the family honor with her easy victory in the Angie C. Stakes on August 4.
A field of six juvenile fillies gathered for the first two-year-old filly stakes of the Emerald season. After morning-line favorite Tinkerbelle Tops was scratched by her trainer, Tim and Sue Spooner's homebred Strawberry Dawn went off as the even-money choice.
But as she had in her first outing, a maiden $25,000 claimer on July 13, Chu and You led at every call to win the $50,000 stakes by 4 3/4 lengths. Rider Juan Gutierrez had also been aboard the Robert Baze trained filly for her nearly six-length victory in her first start.
Washington-bred Strawberry Dawn (Tribal Rule-Ruby Dawn) finished second, a head in front of Dr. George Todaro's Kentucky-bred Decatur Princess (Broken Vow-Manda Island) - the only maiden in the six-panel race was third.
"I had a lot of speed under me and I just tried to save the horse for the last part," said Gutierrez, the meet's leading rider with 71 wins. "She's a nice filly. I had three horses in this race that I had to choose from. This time, I chose the right one."
Chu and You is the 23rd stakes winner sired by Grade 1 winner You and I, who now lives at Old Friends in Kentucky after being retired from stud in late 2010, and is the second foal out of the unraced Volponi mare Bronze Charmer.
