Herbie Climbs the Mountain
The 78th running of the Longacres Mile looms on the horizon, as just four weeks separate the running of Washington's most prestigious race and the final tune-up, the $50,000 Mt Rainier Handicap, run on July 21.
The field for the mile July event was comprised of six geldings, all stakes winners with the exception of Stryker Phd, who was coming into the race after finishing second in the two previous Mile stakes series prep races. Between them, the talented group - which ranged from four to seven years - went into the race having earned 16 stakes victories with nearly $1.8 million monies won. Most of those earnings came via Tres Borraches, who is the sixth millionaire to compete at a Washington track.

Hasting Racecourse invader Herbie D, whose British Columbia-based owners George Robbins and Darcia Doman brought along his regular partner, 2012 leading Hastings rider Amadeo Perez, to take care of necessary guidance issues, went off as the even-money favorite. The four-year-old BC star opened up a clear lead in the first quarter and was never headed, drawing off to a 2 3/4-length win in a time of 1:40.52. It marked the son of Orchid's Devil-Chilli Chines, by Katowice, ninth victory in a dozen races and pushed hi earnings to $227,928.
"I am just so happy right now," said Perez. "I wasn't expecting to get the lead that easy, and I'm so happy that I did. He's a very nice horse and I can't wait for [the Longacres Mile]."
Finishing second - for the third consecutive time in an Emerald stakes - was Jim and Mona' Hour's Stryker Phd, a Washington-bred son of Bertrando-Striking Scholar who finished 1 3/4 lengths the better of R and R Warren LLC's 2013 Budweiser Handicap victor Jebrica, a Washington-bred gelding by Liberty Gold-Peaceful Wings.

Racing Stables Inc. and Desert Rose Racing LLC's Del Rio Harbor, with Rocco Bowen astride, broke well and held a narrow lead over Nicolas Cajun through the first half-mile. After that rival gave way, Del Rio Harbor, a $15.40-to-one longshot, opened up by 1 1/2 lengths in the stretch and held off the late move of Ron Maus-owned Buffalo Stables' first-time starter Illumination Road (Cahill Road-Persiflage) to stay that rival by three-quarters of a length at the wire. Kenai King (Harbor the Gold-Kirkela), who also races for Pam and Neal Christopherson's Bar C Racing, finished another three-quarters of a length back in third place. Final race time for the Emerald Express, which was reinstated to its original name after being run as the Premio Esmeralda from 2007-12, was 1:10.75.After being checked at the three-eighths pole, race favorite Stikine Slough finished last.
Del Rio Harbor, a full brother to 2010 Washington champion two-year- old Couldabenthewhisky, has now won two of his three races and earned $35,013. Bred by the Christophersons and Melanie and Doak Walker's Desert Rose Racing, he is the 14th stakes winner sired by Harbor the Gold and the third produced out of the Horse Chestnut (SAf) mare Bahati.
Doris Harwood, in her 58th stakes win at Emerald and third in the Emerald Express, not only trained the one-three finishers in the juvenile stakes, but saddled first-time starters Knight Club and Fragrant Harbor to a close one-two finish in a $25,000 maiden claimer held four races before the feature.
"Doris(Harwood) told me, 'I'll leave it all in your hands' and that's the best instructions for a jockey," said Bowen. "It helped having the pace competition on the outside of me, but I still had to ride a smart race. It was just a two-horse race at the head of the lane and I was able to get it done."
