Gallyn Mitchell Fundraiser Scheduled for June 15
A special fundraiser for Gallyn Mitchell and his family is to be held at Emerald Downs after the Saturday, June 15, races (approximately 7:00 pm) in the Emerald Room on the fourth floor.
In April, Mitchell, Emerald's all-time leading rider, suffered a heart attack and the family faces mounting medical expenses.
The event, which is $15 per person, will feature a pasta buffet and auction. A cash bar will also be available.
An account in Mitchell's name has been set up at Union Bank, where supporters can deposit cash gifts directly, no matter what the bank branch. |
Summer Hit Scores Win in Grade 3 All American
Summer Hit went gate-to-wire to score his first graded stakes win in the $100,000 All American Stakes (G3) run at Golden Gate Fields on May 27.
Bred by Arlington residents Ken and Janice Heidt (K & J Farm), Summer Hitscored a three-quarter length win in the 1 1/16-mile stakes with a 1:44.09 final time. Russell Baze was aboard the four-year-old California-bred son of Bertrando.
After being claimed from his breeders in his first start in January 2012 - a $12,500 maiden claiming race which he won by nine lengths - Summer Hit finished second in a starter allowance for Salvador Naranjo, but since then has made each of his nine other starts for partners John Carver and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. From among those outings have come six wins, including a tally in the 2012 Silky Sullivan Handicap and placements in the April 27 San Francisco Mile Handicap (G3) - which he lost by a neck - and Grey Memo Stakes.
Summer Hit has earned $281,831 with his 7-2-2 record.
A half-brother to the speedy Emerald Downs stakes winner Starbird Road ($198,697), stakes-placed $140,590 earner Light of a Star and two other winners, Summer Hit is out of the winning Tough Knight matron Mia F Eighteen, a full sister to stakes winner Miatough. Their dam, Lucky Mia, was a half-sister to Washington horse of the year and Grade 2 winner Hilco Scamper. Mia F Eighteen is now owned by Terry and Mary Lou Griffin, who have consigned her yearling filly by Harbor the Gold to the 2013 WTBOA Summer Yearling and Mixed Sale.
Blaine Wright-trained runners finished second and third in the Memorial Day stakes. Hudson Landing, a six-year-old son of Maria's Mon owned by Chappell Alpine Farms LLC who had won the 2012 edition of the All American, was runner-up this year, and Peter Redekop BC Ltd's Administer, a four-year-old Bernstein gelding, finished third in the field of eight. |
Other WTBOA Sales Graduates in the News
A trio of sales graduates emerged as winners over the May 24-25 weekend at Northlands Park. On May 24, stakes-placed Oil Country, a three-year-old Washington-bred son of Free At Last-Topaz 'n Jazz, by Son of Briartic, went gate-to-wire to win his first races by 1 1/2 lengths; and four-year-old
Sudden Arrival, a Washington-bred daughter of Tribal Rule-Sudden Departure, by Demons Begone, earned her second victory. Both runners were bred by Rick and Debbie Pabst. The following day, Beau Diablo, a three-year-old Washington-foaled son of Bedford Falls-Asuraslew, by Slewdledo, bred by Jill Heerensperger, won of the fifth time in 12 starts and increased his earnings to $48,001.
2007 RNA Eighty Eight, who had finished third in the 2008 Captain Condo Stakes, earned his 11th win in an about six-furlong allowance test at Lethbridge on June 1. Bred in Washington by Bar C Racing Stables Inc. and Melodie Bultena, the son of Woodstead Farm stalwart He's Tops-Girls Nite, by Jazzing Around, has earned $62,588 with an 11-11-13 record in 58 starts....
2012 Emerald Downs-raced sophomore fillies Pebble Beach Baby and Madame Pele ran one-two in a six-panel maiden special weight race at Golden Gate on June 1. Bred and raced by Jill Heerensperger, Pebble Beach Baby is a Kentucky-bred daughter of Rock Hard Ten out of the winning Son of Briartic matron Sarna. A product of the 1997 September sale, Sarna, a full sister to Grade 2-placed Son's Corona, has produced three stakes horses among her six winners. The new winner is trained by Blaine Wright. Twice stakes-placed Madame Pele, a 2011 sale graduate, is a Washington-bred daughter of Salt Lake out of Char Clark Thoroughbreds' multiple stakes producer Striking Scholar who races for Kama'aina Thoroughbreds.

Ben's Cat Rallies to Run Third in $150,000 Pennsylvania Stakes
Two-time Maryland horse of the year Ben's Cat made his third start of the year in the $150,000 Pennsylvania Governor's Cup Handicap on June 1 at Penn National. Breaking in the number 11 hole in the five-furlong turf race, Ben's Cat's chances were severely compromised when after racing "close up and three-wide into the turn, (he) was forced wide (when Kyma bore out) and had to check abruptly." The seven-year-old son of two-time leading Washington sire Parker's Storm Cat made a late charge to finish third to Tightend Touchdown and Bridgetown. Ben's Cat has no earned $1,477,140 for trainer-owner-breeder King Leatherbury's The Jim Stable.
Also on June 1, Parker's Love, a six-year-old West Virginia-bred gelding by Parker's Storm Cat out of Hot for Love, by Not for Love, won a 6 1/ 2-furlong allowance at Charles Town and upped his total to $55,495.
Through June 3, Parker's Storm Cat leads the 2013 Washington sire list with $383,081, of which $119,850 has been earned by Ben's Cat. Lucky Acres' Matty G ranks second with $240,893. Deceased Cahill Road holds the number three spot with $210,373. Filling out the top five are Woodstead Farm stallions He's Tops, with $184,718 and pensioned Delineator at $122,077. |
Northwest Trio
For their 2013 debuts, trainer Tom Wenzel sent out Northwest Farms LLC and partners' threesome of well-bred fillies - stakes winners Blueberry Smoothie and Goin to the Window and maiden winner Stopshoppingdebbie -

for the $50,000 Seattle Handicap run on May 26. Five other fillies were also in the mix for the 6 1/2-furlong stakes, but Jerre Paxton's Kentucky-bred distaffers would prove dominant.
Stopshoppingdebbie, with Rocco Bowen aboard, held a narrow lead over Goin to the Window at the quarter pole, but settled into second behind that rival the next section of the race before re-taking command in the final furlong to draw out to a 1 1/2-length win. Formerly unbeaten Goin to the Window (Tapit-Queens Full), who was voted top juvenile filly at the 2012 Emerald meeting and races for Debbie Paxton and Northwest Farms, held second place, 2 1/2 lengths the better of C and M Racing and Northwest Farms' Barbara Shinpoch Stakes winner Blueberry Smoothie (Giant's Causeway-Shampoo). Final race time was 1:14.41.
From the first crop of 2007 Horse of the year Curlin - and his second stakes winner - Stopshoppingdebbie is the third stakes-winning filly out of 1999 Emerald Downs' top juvenile filly Taste the Passion, whose daughters, Shampoo and Smarty Deb, also earned Emerald honors.
Now two-for-two, Stopshoppingdebbie has earned $37,318.
With the three-way finish, Northwest Farms became the first owner in Emerald history to do so, and trainer Tom Wenzel became the first Emerald trainer to saddle the top trio of finishers in a stakes worth more than $25,000 at the Auburn oval.
"I take some humility with the results today because of whom each horse is bred by, but you do have to get them ready for the race," said Wenzel. "I am pretty happy with today's results.
"We thought that Stopshoppingdebbie was possibly the quickest," he added. "She's the kind of horse in the morning that is very intelligent. She's pretty versatile."
Finally Got a Stakes Win
After placing in the Premio Esmeralda, WTBOA Lads Stakes and Gottstein Futurity last year, Northwest Farms LLC and Debbie Paxton's Finallygotabentley preserved the family honor with a one-length victory in the $50,000 Auburn Stakes run on June 2. Just the week before his "aunt' Stopshoppingdebbie had won the Seattle Handicap with his "cousin" Blueberry Smoothie taking third.

Finallygotabentley
(Wayne Nagai) |
A dynamic group of nine sophomore colts and geldings gathered at the gate for the 6 1/2-furlong stakes, which was diminished by one when Music of My Soul was a late scratch. Two-time Southern California stakes winner Carving, who had impressively won his May Emerald debut for Pegasus Syndicate #4, was the odds-on choice to repeat at three-to-five.
After being bumped at the start, Finallygotabentley, with Juan Gutierrez in the saddle, dueled for the early lead with longshot Whistle Cat before gaining a short advantage over the field and then holding on gamely to defeat Nelson Family Racing's Disruption (Street Boss-Disrupt) by a length in a time of 1:15.28. Carving (Any Given Saturday-In Seconds), who had also been bumped at the start, finished only a nose behind in third.
"The biggest difference today was that he finally got a clean trip," said Gutierrez after the win. "I didn't want to go to the lead too early, but I was on the inside and I didn't want to get cut off at the three-eighths pole. I was a little worried that he might get tired and the other horses might catch us, but he really tried hard today. This is a great horse and he has a lot of class."
It was a bit of a déjà vu for winning trainer Tom Wenzel and the connections of Disruption. In the 2012 renewal of the Auburn Stakes, Wenzel saddled Makors Finale to a dead-heat victory with the Nelson Family Racing's D'honorable One. Both Disruption and D'honorable One hail from Blaine Wright's successful stable.
It marks the 23rd Emerald stakes victory for Wenzel, who now ranks tied in seventh in that category with Sharon Ross.
A son of Bernardini and the first foal out of 2007 Emerald champion race filly Smarty Deb, by Smart Strike, Finallygotabentley, who was also bred in Kentucky by Jerre Paxton's Northwest Farms LLC, has now earned $80,468 with his 2-6-1 record in nine starts. Two of those runner-up placements had been against Auburn contestants Forin Sea and Cariboo Road in Emerald allowance tests earlier this spring.

Omak native Louis Zacherle, 25, rode his first winner at Emerald downs when he brought home owner/trainer Preston Boyd's Austincitynights back to the winner's circle after a gate-to-wire victory in the first race on May 24. Trained by Tom Wenzel and ridden by Rocco Bowen, Makors Finale, who is out of 2012 Washington broodmare of the year Coup de Foudre, by Basket Weave, has now won eight of his 14 outings, including his last four, and earned $179,891 for his Oak Harbor-based owners and breeders.
Michael Pollowitz and Jeffrey Wilson's Roarified became the first three-time winner at the meet when the five-year-old Washington-bred daughter of Roar-Sugar Sleet, by Seattle Sleet, scored a gate-to-wire 3 1/2-length tally in a $17,500 claimer on final Friday in May. Trained by Doris Harwood and bred by Dan and Carleen Belton, the 2009 WTBOA sales alumni has won ten of her 14 starts - all at Emerald Downs - and has earned a total of $48,945.

Honors as the first juvenile winner of the 2013 season went to C.E. Rich" and Ann Richardson's homebred Tinkerbelle Tops, who scored a handy gate-to-wire five-length win on June 1 in her first outing, defeating seven other juvenile fillies in the 4 1/2-furlong $25,000 maiden claiming race. Trainer Jeffery Metz moved into the lead with his win with La Capitana on June 2, leading Chris Stenslie 16-to-15.It is no surprise that Tom Wenzel leads in earnings ($149,959) after winning the Seattle and Auburn handicaps and his 74 percent top three finishes. Blaine Wright ranks third in wins with nine and a 64 percent top three. |
