Kentucky Derby - 139th Run for the Roses

In a day so steeped in deep tradition it was satisfying for many longtime racing enthusiasts that the Phipps family, who has graciously stood at the forefront of racing for over 87 years, finally had its first Kentucky Derby (G1) winner, as first cousins Stuart Janney III and Ogden Phipps' homebred Orb decisively came home by 2 1/2 lengths in the May 4 classic. Janney and Phipps are grandsons of Gladys Mills Phipps, whose Wheatley Stable bred and raced 1957 Horse of the Year and Preakness Stakes winner Bold Ruler.

Orb, who is trained by Hall of Fame conditioner and Kentucky native C. R. "Shug" McGaughey III, is a son of Malibu Moon - a half-brother to two-time Washington leading sire Parker's Storm Cat. After failing to win in his first three starts, Orb has remain unbeaten since winning a maiden special weight race at Aqueduct in late November. His first stakes win and third victory came in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes in February, followed by nearly a three-length tally in the Florida Derby (G1) in March.

Orb descends from 1975 broodmare of the year Shenanigans - his fourth dam - a 1963 daughter of Native Dancer who will always be remembered as the dam of the great ill-fated champion filly Ruffian, as well as good runners and sires Icecapade and Buckfinder. Among the other top runners from this family are Travers Stakes (G1) winner Coronado's Quest, Wood Memorial (G1) winner Private Terms, Grade 1 winner Suggestive Boy and additional graded winners Mesabi Maiden (Orb's second dam), Blue Ensign and Light Spirits.

Golden Soul (Perfect Soul [Ire]-Hollywood Gold), who finished second in this year's "Run for the Roses" was bred and is owned by British Columbia diamond magnate Charles Fipke, whose runners at Emerald Downs are trained by Tim McCanna.

Derby third Revolutionary also has a tie to Washington as the son of War Pass is out of Grade 1 winner Runup the Colors, a half-sister to Grade 2 winner and Little King Ranch stallion Top Account.

Two former leading Washington riders had mounts in the 19-horse Derby field. Washington Racing Hall of Famer Gary Stevens finished sixth aboard Oxbow and Kevin Krigger rode 17th place finisher Goldencents.

Washington-connected Horses Run Two-three in Grade 3 San Francisco Mile

Four-year-old Summer Hit, who was bred in California by Ken and Jan Heidt, just missed winning the $100,000 San Francisco Mile Stakes (G3) run at Golden Gate Fields on April 27. After leading for the first four calls, Summer Hit, ridden by Russell Baze, was defeated by a neck by Tigah (GB). A son of Bertrando-Mia F Eighteen, by Tough Knight, the consistent Summer Hit, who is a half-brother to $198,697 Washington-bred stakes winner and sprint specialist Starbird Road, improved his earnings to $221,835 with his record of 6-2-2 from ten starts. Randall and Rossi LLC's now seven-year-old Gallant Son finished third in the field of ten. The Kentucky-bred son of Malabar Gold, who is trained by Frank Lucarelli, has now placed in the last three runnings of the San Francisco Mile. A seven-time stakes winner and 2008 Emerald Downs champion two-year-old, the graded stakes winner has earned $457,128 in 35 starts.

Summer Hit runs for John Carver and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. The California conditioner won five stakes races over the final weekend in April. Among Hollendorfer's many wins over the weekend was a victory with Dr. George Todaro, Hollendorfer and partners Halo Dolly, a five-year-old daughter of Popular, in the Grade 3 Wilshire Handicap. The California-bred mare has won 15 of her 29 starts and earned $753,786. Todaro and Hollendorfer also teamed together to win with Our Cognac Kid, by Henny Hughes, in an allowance/$50,000 optional claiming (N) race and Captain Hedley, by Flower Alley, in a starter allowance, both run at Golden Gate on April 28.

Also running well in a California stakes in late April was Dr. Rodney Orr's Raised a Secret, who had finished third in the 2012 Gottstein Futurity. The California-bred son of Songandaprayer ran second in the $70,000 Grey Memo Stakes at Hollywood, improving his record to 1-1-1 from four outings.

Emerald Notes

Valerie Gibson, wife of Emerald starter Mark Gibson, scored her first win as a trainer with Bid for Pride during the second weekend of racing, when the Washington-bred son of Liberty Gold bred by Terry and Mary Lou Griffin won the second race on Friday, April 27. Back-up track announce Dean Mazzuca (Two Putts for the Win Stable) is part owner in Bid for Pride and Hardbody, a filly by Hard Spun, who took the fourth race on the same card.

The Saturday feature was won by 2012 stakes-placed WTBOA sales graduate Cariboo Road after the disqualification of first-place finisher I Keep Smiling, who impeded the eventual winner in deep stretch. A three-year-old Washington-bred son of Cahill Road, Cariboo Road, who bred by the Griffins and Ron Crockett Inc., has earned $38,249 for British Columbia residents Glyn Kelly and Anne MacLennan.

Makors Finale 4/28/13

(Wayne Nagai Photo)

2012 Washington horse of the year Makors Finale made his 2013 debut in  the Sunday feature, a 5 1/2-furlong allowance where he met a tough group in his first race against older runners. Among the seven handicappers challenging Karl Krieg's homebred were multiple stakes winner and 2012 Longacres Mile (G3) runner-up Winning Machine - the $1.60-to-one favorite; 2009 Mile winner Assessment; fellow four-year-old D'honorable One, who had dead-heated for the win with Makors Mark in last season's Auburn Stakes; and 2012 stakes winner and Washington's most improved plated Kooky Saluki.

Rocco Bowen, in their third straight winning appearance together, was aboard Makors Finale as he held on to gamely defeat Fleur de Lis Stables' multiple Emerald champion Winning Machine by a neck in a time of 1:02.71. He was one of three winners on the card for 23-year-old Bowen. North American Thoroughbred Racing Company Inc.'s Hoist finished a half-length behind in third place, closely followed by Edge Forward and D'honorable One as only a length separated the first five finishers.

Hailing from Tom Wenzel's barn, Makors Finale (Makors Mark-Coup de Foudre) has earned $167,475 in 13 starts with a record of 7-4-0.

The co-feature of the April 28 card was an allowance/$25,000 optional claimer won by multiple stakes-placed Royal Moses, a Washington-bred daughter of Cahill Road who was making her 2013 debut for Squatting Dog Stable and Rusty Warwick, for whom she has earned $73,847.

Week Three

Among the winners on the seven-race Friday, May 3, card was first-time starter Whistle Cat, a homebred runner for Howard Maggard, who won a $20,000 maiden claiming race. The three-year-old gelding became the first Washington-bred runner by current leading Washington sire Parker's Storm Cat to win in the Evergreen State.

Two first-time starters finished one-two in a six-panel maiden special weight race on Saturday. Homestretch Farm and Hilton Stables LLC's Follow My Tracks, a son of pensioned You and I, won the race. Follow My Tracks is the third winner from three foals produced by stakes-placed R C Gangster, whose first two runners were stakes-placed at Emerald Downs, including Follow My Tracks' full sister The Gang and I. Finishing second, one length back, was Ron Crockett Inc.'s Belt, a son of Cahill Road-La Mariah.

The first race on "Cinco de Mayo" also a maiden special weight race, was taken by Ernest Braithewaite's first-time starter Lasting Rose, who won the 5 1 /2-furlong race by 2 1/4 lengths. The British Columbia-bred daughter of Rosberg is out of three-time stakes winner La Belle Fleur, a daughter of Son of Briartic who earned $145,512.

Carving 5/5/13

The Sunday main event, a six-furlong allowance for sophomore-aged  runners, featured the return of 2012 Gottstein Futurity winner and state champion Music of My Soul who would be facing two-time Southern California stakes winner Carving. A son of Any Given Saturday, Carving was making his first start for new owner Pegasus Syndicate #4 since being purchased from the partnership of Jill Baffert, whose husband Bob Baffert had been Carving's initial trainer, and champion Alpine skier Bode Miller. Two others also faced the test, recent Emerald winner Boyett and two-time 2012 stakes winner Mike Man's Gold, also in his 2013 debut.

With Javier Matias aboard, the Mike Puhich-trained Carver edged clear to defeat Elttaes Stable's Music of My Soul by 1 1/2 lengths in a time of 1:09.74.

"He's going to be a fun horse for us up here," said Puhich.

Kentucky-bred Carving has now won half of his eight starts and earned $183,700.

Through the end of week three Chris Stenslie continues to lead Emerald trainers with ten wins from 28 starters. Newcomer Jeffrey Metz follows with eight winners and Puhich has saddled four winners to rank third.

Rider Juan Gutierrez leads the tied Rocco Bowen and Isaias Enriquez 15-to-ten. Javiar Matias is next in line with nine wins. Gutierrez has ridden one of more winners through the first nine cards.

Washington-bred of the Week at Emerald Downs

The first Washington-bred of the week title (April 19-21) went to Grasshopper Stables' six-year-old Sweet Nellie Brown (Cape Canaveral-Brown, by Demons Begone). In her first start back since last September, the 2011 Belle Roberts Stakes winner scored a 2 1/2-length win in a waiver $25,000 claiming race on April 20. It marked the sixth win for the Jim Penney trainee who was ridden by Ronald Richard. Bred by Rick and Debbie Pabst at their Buckley-based Blue Ribbon Farm, the 2008 WTBOA Sale yearling has earned $152,573.

David S. Israel's Tough Road Ahead went gate-to-wire to score a two-length victory in a $15,000 claiming race on April 26 and was named top Washington-bred for week two. A four-year-old son of Cahill Road-Miatough, by Tough Knight, it marked his first outing since running third in the Chinook Pass Stakes last September. Bred by Helen L. Mahre and trained by Charles Essex, Tough Road Ahead has a 4-1-2 record from eight starts and earnings of $36,789. Israel also had a winner in partnership on April 28 when his Inquiry Miss, a Kentucky-bred three-year-old daughter of Lawyer Ron who is trained by Mary Pirone, won a maiden $7,500 claimer by nearly seven lengths.

"A Thoroughbred Affair" Event to Be Held October 5 at Emerald Downs

"A Thoroughbred Affair," a unique all-Thoroughbred horse show and demonstrations will be held at Emerald Downs racetrack in Auburn on Saturday, October 5, 2013. Intended as a fundraiser for the sponsoring organization, The Prodigious Fund, the event provides an opportunity for owners of Thoroughbreds (including former racehorses!) to demonstrate to the general public that their horses are "user-friendly" mounts, mentors and companions.

The class list has been designed to reflect and support this. From the lead line (for children six and under) and walk/trot to the jumping and trail courses, exhibitors will show their Thoroughbreds quietly toting youngsters and obeying the commands of their riders, young and old. .

Thoroughbred enthusiasts from all disciplines and levels are encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity. From avid show participants to devoted trail riders, 4-H'ers to high school equestrian team members, from the professional to the recreational rider, A Thoroughbred Affair is for all Thoroughbred lovers!

Participants will have the opportunity to share their horse's story on the "I Love My Thoroughbred" display wall. Here we will read of the horse's racing background, how the horse came into the rider's life, and how much their life has been enriched by the Thoroughbred. All will be inspired to find a way to have a Thoroughbred affair of their own! Toward that end, horses available for purchase, lease or adoption will be designated with an Emerald green ribbon on their tail, as well as a sticker on their story page.

In addition, demonstrations of the multitude of areas in which the Thoroughbred can excel will be held during the lunch break. Dressage (both classical and western), polo and barrel racing are already scheduled to be presented. .Each demonstrating group will have an informational booth including video.

Spectators will have the opportunity to interact with Thoroughbreds well-known to racing fans - You Me and Emma B, Wasserman and West Seattle Boy are all tentatively scheduled to take a turn in the Thoroughbred Affair petting pen. Bring your camera and have your picture taken standing in front of your favorite, or simply offer them a carrot!

Emerald Downs' Prodigious Fund supports and promotes the transition of Thoroughbred racehorses to their next career. Proceeds from and donations generated at A Thoroughbred Affair will all go toward that goal. For more information, contact show manager Karen Worthington at (360) 825-7498, (253) 797-3393 or [email protected].

Lawanda Bronson's seven-year-old Oregon-bred gelding Dominic Pass, by Bagshot, took the Saturday Thoroughbred feature, a four-furlong allowance, by nearly a length. The featured Quarter Horse race was a 880-yard handicap won by Bill Hoburg-owned, -trained and co-bred Tin Your Eyes.

Three Thoroughbred maiden special weight races were among Sunday's eight races. The winners were Perry Pakootas-owned and -trained Magriesdanzindots, a five-year-old Washington-bred daughter of Go; Don Abrahamson's Stolen Goldfire, a four-year-old Washington-bred gelding by Stolen Gold; and Antonio Mendoza's homebred My Prisila, a three-year-old Oregon-bred daughter of Polish Miner.

Also run on Sunday was the $3,300 Sun Downs Quarter Horse Derby, a 350-yard affair won by race favorite Sneakin Bye, a filly who also annexed the Baxter Andruss Oregon-bred Futurity at Portland Meadows for her owner-breeder Gary Chumbley last December.

Trained by Bill Hof, Trixie Two was bred by the Donohoe family's Robinette Ranches and ridden by Jose Figueroa. William J. Grether Farms Inc.'s Buck's Bro, by Benchmark, ran second and was followed to the wire by Reiien McLendon's Only Be Cause, by Giant's Causeway.

A large crowd wagered $65,410 on Sunday.

"It was an excellent turnout," said Nancy Sorick of the Tri-City Horse Racing Association (TCHRA). "Once again the fans came out to support us."

Fellow TCHRA member Cliff Shellinger was also pleased about the meet. "No horses got hurt, no jockeys got hurt."

Don Young took the trainer title with a record of 5-1-2 from a dozen starts. His runners also led in the money column with $5,033. Both Robert Lawrence and Preston Boyd saddled three winners each while Jacqueline Smith and Bill Hof scored doubles.

Ruben Camacho led all riders with a record of 7-4-3 and $8,499 from 20 mounts. Zacherle was next in line with four wins, followed by Jose A. Figueroa's three. Troy Stillwell and Robert Burney each rode two winners.

2012 Oregon Champions Bar None

On April 27, 2013, the Oregon Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (OTOBA) held their Hoofbeats and Heartbeats annual awards banquet at Spirit Mountain Casino.

2012 Oregon horse of the year honors went to Eric Jensen's unbeaten homebred two-year-old filly Calypsonoted, who Jenson also trains. The daughter of Harbor the Gold took the Janet Wineberg Stakes by nearly 14 lengths and defeated her male counterparts in the Don Jackson Futurity. Stoppin Memo, Calypsonoted three-year-old half-sister by Tribal Rule, was named top sophomore filly after winning four of her 2012 starts, including the Oregon Hers Stakes. Stoppin Memo also raced for her breeder Jenson, though is trained by Steve Fisher. The two champions' dam, 12-year-old Flying Memo was named broodmare of the year.

Jenson no longer owns Flying Memo, as her 2012 full brother to Calypsonoted was bred by Bret Christopherson, who with his wife Julie, race 2012 Oregon champion juvenile male runner Captainnotsosober, a son of Harbor the Gold bred by Bret's parents, Pam and Neil Christopherson's Bar C Racing Stable.

Captainnotsosober was one of three 2012 Oregon champions bred by the Hermiston-based Bar C, which is also home to now four-time (2009-12) leading sire Harbor the Gold. Bar C also produced Ryan Kenney, Brittany Moore and Serena Crispin's champion three-year-old male runner Lil Red Rocket, a son of Cascadian who was an impressive maiden special weight winner before finishing fourth in the Oregon Breeders Derby. Hurliman Enterprise LLC's Midda's Gold Touch, also by Harbor the Gold, rounds out the trio of Bar C champions, as the Oregon Sprint Championship winner was voted top older male runner.

Harbor the Gold, who sired 38 winners of $656,829 in 2012, has come up with nine Washington or Oregon champions - who have earned 16 year-end titles - in his first six crops and 119 foals.

Mountain Echo, who turned seven this year, repeated for the third time as champion older filly or mare. Bred by Mary Caldwell and Larry Bollman, the daughter of Tempered Appeal won five races last year, including the Princess Cup at Fort Erie, for James Schlehr and Dave Ford. Mountain Echo, who has earned $262,554, ran sixth in her 2013 bow at Woodbine on April 27.

Oregon Fair Circuit Champion honors went to Tiff Tivy Tiff - another talented Bar C-bred runner - and 2011 Oregon champion He's a Goblin, by He's Tops, took the male title.

Ben Root earned the training title with the most success with Oregon-breds, and his parents, Dr. Jack and Margaret "Cookie" Root Jr. were named the state's leading breeders' for the eighth time, and seventh time consecutively, as well as being named Oregon's TOBA winner for the fourth time.

The Jockey Club, TOBA Unveil New Website Promoting Medication Reform

The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) announced in late April 2013 the launch of horseracingreform.org, an advocacy and information website designed to promote improved regulatory standards for horse racing. The site replaces cleanhorseracing.org.

"Over the course of the last year we have seen tangible progress in the area of medication reform - as evidenced by the Mid-Atlantic states' adoption of a uniform medication policy, the Association of Racing Commissioners International's approval of a controlled therapeutic medication schedule, and increased movement toward RMTC accreditation of drug-testing labs," said James L. Gagliano, president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club. "As the horse racing industry moves toward improved and uniform regulations, horseracingreform.orgwill provide important benchmark information, such as state-by-state summaries of medication rules and safety requirements."

Cleanhorseracing.org, launched in May 2012, featured news, videos, scientific studies and commentary in support of medication-free racing.Horseracingreform.org expands on those features and includes additional information pertaining to:

  • The Jockey Club's Thoroughbred Safety Committee
  • The regulatory rulings database (thoroughbredrulings.com)
  • State-by-state summaries of medication rules and safety requirements
  • Details on TOBA's medication- and safety-related programs
  • Ongoing work of the Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit committees

The state-by-state graphic summary of medication rules and penalties in all racing states provides users with an efficient means to review regulations. Also included is a timeline charting industry-wide medication- and safety-reform initiatives that have been launched since 2006.

"The industry has made great strides in reform over the past several years," said Dan Metzger, president of TOBA. "TOBA is proud to continue its collaboration with The Jockey Club, and we are continuously striving to improve the economics, integrity and pleasure of the sport on behalf of owners and breeders with initiatives like the Horse Racing Reform website."

"We have added a great deal of new content and the new name covers a broader scope of activities and more accurately conveys what we are trying to accomplish," said Gagliano. "We believe that the objective, factual information on this website will enable visitors to learn more about reform issues and take action to encourage change."
