2012 Champion E Z Kitty Sold
Five-time stakes winner and 2012 Washington champion older filly E Z Kitty changed hands for the second time in a year when the now five-year-old daughter of He's Top-Envision the Cat was purchased by Arizona residents Bruce and Cass Miller after running second in the Mesa Handicap in March. The $151,173 earner has returned to Emerald Downs where Jeff Metz is her new trainer.
Bred by Jerry and Peggy Woods and originally raced by Homer and Nancy Gibson's Tige Too Racing Stable - for whom she won two stakes at Emerald - the 2009 WTBOA sales yearling won three stakes and placed in two others while racing for trainer Mike Chambers, John Xitco and Dan Agnew at the 2012-13 Turf Paradise meet. |

Five-year-old Ivanho won his fourth race and third in four tries in 2013 when the gelded son of Broken Vow-Mybrowneyedgal took a $40,000 claiming race at Santa Anita Park on March 28, upping the earnings of the 2009 $26,500 sales purchase to $165,490.
Grade 3 stakes winner Upgrade, a six-year-old son of St. Liam out of $363,125 multiple stakes winner Emily Ring, won an allowance/$100,000 optional claiming (N) race on Keeneland's opening card on April 5, pushing his earnings to $363,976. Emily Ring, a daughter of Fit to Fight, is one of two stakes winners produced out of Commercial Run (a 1990 WTBOA Winter Sale yearling by Table Run), a half-sister to 1993 Washington champion three-year-old filly Commercial Choice(by Knight Choice) and three other stakes-placed runners.
2011 sale RNA Polebound, a filly by Raise the Bluff-Waving Flags, by Event of the Year, bred in Washington by Jerry Byers, won an about mile maiden/$30,000 optional claiming race at Turf Paradise on April 9.
2011 Washington champion three-year-old filly Castinette Dancer returned to the winner's circle in her first start since last September when she won an allowance/$40,000-$35,000 optional claiming (N) race on the opening day (April 13) of the 2013 season at Hastings Racecourse. Bred by John Roche, the now five-year-old daughter of Ministers Wild Cat out of stakes winner Premo Copy, by Supremo, has won six races, including three stakes for Glen Todd's North American Thoroughbred Horse Company Inc. $5,200 RNA at the 2009 WTBOA sale, she has earned $179,802 in 17 starts.
The first winner of the 2013 season at Emerald Downs was first-time starter and 2011 sale graduate Southern Solution, a Washington-bred son of Southern Africa--Kimora bred by John Parker and Candi Tollett and raced by Mark Dedomenico LLC and Michael Pegram. Ben's Cat Wins 2013 Debut
Two-time Maryland horse of the year Ben's Cat made good in his 2013 debut when the seven-year-old son of Gibson Thoroughbred Farm's twice leading Washington sire Parker's Storm Cat took the $75,000 Mister Diz Stakes run at Pimlico for the fourth straight year on April 6. It marked the 15th stakes victory for the two-time Grade 3 winner and was his 20th win in 30 starts, upping his earnings to $$1,402,290 for trainer-owner-breeder King Leatherbury.
Through April 22, Parker's Storm Cat leads the 2013 Washington sire list with $197,254. Lucky Acres' Matty G ranks second and Woodstead Farm's He's Tops holds the number three spot. |
Although the weather was wet and skies were gray, the 18th season of racing at Emerald Downs got underway with an enthusiastic crowd on Friday, April 19, in the first of 75 days of live racing.
The Sunday feature included a stellar class of stakes-winning older fillies and mares, with four of the five making their 2013 debut.
Northwest Farms LLC and Debbie Paxton's three-time Emerald stakes winner Exclusive Diva came out on top in her first start since winning a similar test last September, but it was a close one, as the four-year-old daughter of Bernardini -who is trained by Tom Wenzel - outpaced 2012 Washington champion older filly E Z Kitty by only a neck in the 5 1/2-furlong allowance. Two-time 2013 stakes winner E Z Kitty, by He's Tops, was making her fifth start of the season, but first for new owner Bruce Maller and new trainer Jeffrey Metz. Finishing third was 2011 Boeing and Hastings handicap winner You Me and Ema B, by You and I, in her first start back in 20 months for trainer Margo Lloyd's Monogram Racing Stable.
Juan Gutierrez has now been aboard Exclusive Diva for all six of her lifetime wins. Gutierrez, who earned his 1,000th Emerald victory on April 21 with maiden winner Ankeny Hill, opened up a quick lead among Emerald riders with a record of 7-4-5 from 21 starts. Only Gutierrez and all-time leader Gallyn Mitchell (1,347) have ridden a thousand winners at the Auburn oval.
Herman Sarkowsky's Forin Sea, by Brother Derek, also took an allowance test on Sunday.The Doris Harwood three-year-old defeated Northwest Farms LLC's Finallygotabentley by one length in the 5 1/2-furlong opener. It was the second Emerald Downs winner ridden by newcomer Isaias Enriquez.
Oregon physician Dr. Rodney Orr got off to a great start to the season as all three of his runners returned to the winner's circle, including two first-time homebred three-year-old maiden special weight winners Boyett and Ankeny Hill. Both sons of Sharp Humor won 5 1/2-furlong tests by 3 3/4 lengths and each was ridden by Gutierrez and is trained by Chris Stenslie. Orr's other winner was Postulate.
Besides saddling Orr's trio, Stenslie had three winners for Jody Peetz and various partners, to take the early lead among conditioners with a record of 6-1-2 from 14 starts. Newcomer Metz impressed with four wins, three seconds and one third from 13 starters.
After the Finish Line
Emerald Downs introducedThoroughbreds: After the Finish Line, a new program which each week will feature a retired racehorse in a new career. Last week's featured equine was Washington-bred Snackbasket (1996 gelding, Basket Weave-Snacktime, by Staff Writer, 41 starts in eight seasons of racing, 5-5-11, $46,824), whose latest career includes show jumping, dressage and cross-country. 123racing $2 Wager Introduced
A new, innovative $2 wager has been introduced for the 2013 season. 123racing emulates the format of a Pick-6 ticket, but participants accrue points equivalent to their choices' cumulative win, place and show payoffs. For more information go to www.123racing.info.
Emerald Downs Live
Emerald Downs Livereturned to Comcast SportsNet Northwest with the first of its expanded four-hour programs. Hosted by Joe Withee and sideline reporters Jacob Pollowitz and CSN's Jamie Hudson, the 2:00-6:00 pm program will feature Emerald's entire live cards, as well as interviews with horsemen. The show will be broadcast every Saturday until September, when the final weeks of the meet will air on Sunday.

Sun Downs held the first of their three weekend (six days total) meet on April 20 and 21 with a dozen Quarter Horse and seven Thoroughbred races among the 19 races carded
The headliner among the Thoroughbred races was the $3,000 Dorothy Adams Buttons and Bows Handicap, a four-furlong race for three and up distaffers, which was taken in gate-to-wire fashion by Lyle Magnuson's Leolas Girl, a four-year-old daughter of Beefchopper-Nifty Leola, by Ihtimam, bred in Washington by Marie C. Monroe and trained by former kindergarten teacher Jacqueline Smith. Among Smith's former pupils is leading rider/attorney Nikeela Black, whose lone win over the weekend came aboard Leolas Girl. William J. Hasenoehrl's Sasha B, a six-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Is It True finished second, two lengths the better of Bern B. Kent's four-year-old Washington-bred Aint No Sweet Pea, a daughter of Jimalator Cat.
Thoroughbred maiden special weight races were won by first-time starters Tizbrightness and Churchbob, who blew past their rivals by 6 3/4 and 9 1/4 lengths respectively. Both thee-year-old runners are owned by Tom Grether Farms Inc., trained by Robert Lawrence and were ridden by Ruben Camacho. |
Playfair Reunion Scheduled for August 3
Now in its second year, a reunion of Playfair horsemen and fans is scheduled to be held at Annie's Fannie Bar, Grill and Casino (formerly the Stockyard Inn) in West Central Spokane on Saturday, August 3. The $15 buffet, which includes tax and gratuity, will begin at 6:00 pm. There will be a no host bar and featured among the evening's festivities will be the opportunity to test your karaoke skills. Last year over 200 racing enthusiasts attended the event.
Former jockey J.L. (Joe) Garcia is spearheading the reunion. Reservations need to be made by July 15 in order to have enough food on hand for the large crowd that is expected.

Billie Klokstad and Helen Sherry's homebred Special Summer is now two for two after the three-year-old Washington-bred daughter of Lucky Acres' Free At Last-Summer Sails, by In Excess (Ire), won a six-panel starter allowance race at Golden Gate Fields by 2 1/4 lengths on March 28. The half-sister to stakes-placed Windy Sails is trained by Tim McCanna.
Blaine Wright-owned and -trained Dave's Cutie was a 4 1/2-length winner in her first start, a $12,500 maiden claiming race at Golden Gate on March 23. Bred by the late David L. Martin, the three-year-old daughter of El Dorado Farms LLC's Raise the Bluff is out of four-race Little Cutie, a Petersburg-sired full sister to stakes winners Miss Pixie ($301,619) and Peters Punkin ($97,908) and stakes-placed Miss Mariah.
Three-year-old Think Sunshine, a daughter of Broken Vow-Beautiful Stranger who races for Dave Mowat's Ten Broeck Farm Inc., won her first outing, a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race at Golden Gate Fields, by 5 1/2 lengths on March 30. The new winner is trained by Tim McCanna.
Horseplayers Racing Club's three-year-old Thrillagee, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Congaree-Singing Sister won a $12,500 maiden claiming race at Golden Gate on March 31.
Herman Sarkowsky and Martin J. Wygod's homebred Omega Star won the $200,000 Echo Eddie Stakes at Santa Anita on March 30. The three-year-old California-bred gelding by Candy Ride (Arg)-Pride of Pegasus improved his record to 2-2-0 from five starts and has earned $213,250.
Karl Krieg's homebred Indy Racer, a three-year-old Washington-foaled son of Rosberg-Miss Raisor Sharp, by Raisor's Edge, went gate-to-wire to score his second win in five starts in an about 7 1/2-furlong allowance race at Turf Paradise on March 30. The gelding is trained by Valorie Lund.
Summer Hit, a stakes-winning son of Bertrando bred in California by Ken and Jan Heidt, won a mile allowance/$62,500 optional claiming (N) race over Santa Anita's turf course on March 31.The California-bred gelding improved his record to 6-1-2 from nine starts and his earnings level to $201,835. He is one of two stakes winners produced out of the Tough Knight mare Mia F Eighteen, who has is a yearling filly by Harbor the Gold which was bred by Griffin Place LLC.
Twice Washington top plater Chukchi Sunrise went gate-to-wire to score a three-quarter length victory in a 5 1/2-furlong allowance test at Golden Gate on April 5. The seven-year-old daughter of Russellthemussell-Kalowana Sunrise, by Aloha Prospector, who was bred in Washington by Russell Moore's Seawind Stables LLC, improved her record to 12-7-6 from 38 starts and went over the $200,000 mark to $204,494 with her1:04.42 victory. On the same card, Remmah Racing Inc.'s homebred Anita Marie took a$20,000 maiden claiming race. The California-bred three-year-old daughter of Thisnearlywasmine-Dee Dee's Princess, by Cryptoclearance, is trained by Frank Lucarelli.
Edward and Theresa DeNike's multiple stakes winner Control Seeker took his tenth victory in a mile allowance/$80,000 optional claiming (N) race at Golden Gate on April 6. The seven-year-old California-bred son of Sought After scored a 1 1/4-length win in the turf outing and upped his total winnings to $375,199.
2012 national champion two-year-old filly Beholder took the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) by nearly three lengths on April 6 and has now earned $1,575,000. The daughter of Henny Hughes's third dam is former Washington stakes producer One Last Bird.
Grade 3 stakes winner Super Ninety Nine, a three-year-old colt by Pulpit bred by Northwest Farms LLC, finished third in the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 6. The Kentucky-bred colt has earned $374,480 in seven starts.
Six-year-old Include the Baby, a daughter of Include bred by Michael and Amy Feuerborn out of their Washington Oaks winner Biaconi Baby, took a six-furlong starter stakes at Turf Paradise on April 9 to record her seventh win and up her earnings to $77,211.
2011 Auburn Stakes winner Showme Yourfriends earned his sixth victory in an about six-furlong allowance/$40,000 optional claiming (N) race over Santa Anita's downhill turf course on April 12. The Washington-bred son of pensioned Delineator-Raise a Moon, by Chisos, races for Don M. Hopwood, Dean Mazzuca and Ray McCanna and is trained by Mark Glatt. Bred by Howard Belvoir, the five-year-old gelding has earned $160,494.
Dave Breiwick's homebred Tale Spinner, a three-year-old Washington-bred son of El Dorado Farms LLC's Raise the Bluff out of six-race winner Summer Straw, by Basket Weave, won an about mile maiden/$30,000 optional claiming (N) race by 6 1/4 lengths at Turf Paradise on April 13.
Dr. George Todaro and partners Jerry or Janet Hollendorfer had three winners over the April 13-14 weekend at Golden Gate. All three, Forbidden City, Heriocally and allowance winner Malibu Rum, were ridden by Russell Baze. It was the ninth win for Malibu Rum and put the Kentucky-bred son of Kela over the $100,000 mark in earnings.
Richard T. Beal Jr.'s Tasya won for the tenth time after the five-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Successful Appeal-Heart That Matters, took a 5 1/2-furlong allowance test by 2 1/4 lengths at Golden Gate on April 14. Bred by Jerre Paxton Northwest Farms LLC, she has earned $91,989.
Three-year-old Get Happy Mister, a son of First Samurai, won the $100,000 Northern Spur Stakes at Oaklawn Park on April 13. It was the fifth win in six starts for the Colorado-bred who is out of stakes-placed Sara Margaret (by Elusive Quality), whose $141,125 stakes-placed dam Kinda Beau is a daughter of a winning full sister to $85,788 stakes winner Hi Chaparral and a half-sister to Washington champion and leading sire Knights Choice. The last three horses mentioned were all bred by Jerre Paxton.
Ernest Sherman's homebred Beautranda made her first start a winning one when the three-year-old Washington-bred filly took a six-furlong maiden special weight race at Golden Gate on April 20. Trained by Blaine Wright, the daughter of Bertrando is the first foal out of 2007 Boeing Handicap winner Beaulena, a daughter of Beau Genius who won or placed in nine other stakes and earned $201,116.
2012 Budweiser Handicap runner-up Rainier Ice won an allowance/$20,000 optional claiming race at Turf Paradise on April 22. The five-year-old gelding by Forestry-In the Clear, who was bred in Kentucky by Northwest Farms LLC, has won six races and earned $81,079.
Centre Court, the four-year-old daughter of Smart Strike who took her fourth graded stakes win in the March 16 Honey Fox Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park is out of the Grade 2 A.P. Indy mare Let, who is a half-sister to the grandam of Gibson Thoroughbred Farm broodmare Maui Rose, a daughter of Dixieland Band.
Three-year-old Revolutionary took his third consecutive win and second graded stakes when the son of War Pass defeated a field of 13 others in the $1-million Louisiana Derby (G2) run at Fair Grounds on March 30. The $788,500 earner is out of Alabama Stakes (G1) winner Runup the Colors, an A. P. Indy half-sister to six other stakes winners, including Little King Ranch's Grade 2 stakes winner and sire Top Account.
The lightly-raced Graydar added a nearly two-length victory in the New Orleans Handicap (G2) at Fair Grounds on March 30 to his Donn Handicap (G1) score. The four-year-old son of Unbridled Song is out of the Dehere mare Sweetest Smile, who was bred by Jerry and Gail Schneider out of their stakes winner Cielo Otono. Yakima Meadows and Bay Meadows stakes winner Cielo Otono is the dam of 2012 Belle Robert Stakes winner Cielator and the granddam of 2011 Barbara Shinpoch Stakes winner Sweet Saga. Graydar, who has earned $601,560 after winning four of his five lifetime starts, underwent surgery to remove a chip in his ankle shortly after his latest win and is expected to be away from the track until late summer.
Burban, a five-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Speightstown, won the $75,000 Break Through Stakes at Aqueduct on April 4. It was the mare's fourth win in six starts and upped her earnings to $166,440. Burbank is the first foal out of Washington-bred Horse B With You, a stakes-winning, graded stakes-placed daughter of Slewdledo out of three-race winner Our Rich Native, who is a half-sister to three Washington-bred stakes winners: champion two-year-old filly A Dollar One, Mr. Easy Money and Talk's Cheap. Horse B With You's two-year-old filly by Kodiak Kowboy is owned by Dr. George Todaro.
Multiple graded stakes winner Willcox Inn finished second, a half-length behind Amira's Prince (Ire), in the $400,000 Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Handicap (G3) at Fair Grounds on March 30. The five-year-old son of Harlan's Holiday-De Aar has earned $775,443 for Lael Stable and All In Stable, the latter which includes among its partners Jack and Theresa Hodge's Oakcrest Farm.
2012 two-year-old stakes winner Officer Alex took his second stakes win in the $75,000 Bachelor Stakes at Oaklawn Park on April 6 and has now earned $151,572. The son of Officer is out of $193,505 Washington-bred earner Ms. C D Player, a Boca Rio-sired half-sister to stakes producer Bluledo.
Washington native and 2013 Washington Racing Hall of Fame nominee Wesley Ward trained the first juvenile winners at the 2013 spring Keeneland meet when he saddled Sweet Emma Rose, by City Zip, to a nine-length tally on the April 5 opening card and Pablo Del Monte, a colt by Giant's Causeway who he bred and owns in partnership, to a five-length win on April 7. Both runners were making their first starts.
Five-year-old Swagger Jack, the son of Smart Strike who won the $400,000 Carter Handicap (G1) at Aqueduct on April 6, is the third stakes winner and sixth stakes horse out of the unraced The Minstrel mare Lyrical Prayer, who is a half-sister to 2011 Washington broodmare of the year Peaceful Wings - damof a trio of stakes winners, led by 2011 Washington champion three-year-old Jebrica, and two other stakes-placed runners among her ten winners.
2012 Emerald Downs horse of the meeting Class Included finished second in a mile allowance test over Keeneland's turf course for new owner Brittlyn Stable Inc. on April 19, and went over the $400,000 with her $19,000 addition.
2011 Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) winner St Nicholas Abbey (Ire) added another Grade/Group 1 score when the six-year-old son of Montjeu (Ire) took the $5-million Dubai Sheema Classic by 2 1/4 lengths at Meydan race course in the United Arab Emirates on March 30. The English and Irish highweight older horse has earned over $7.5-million with his 8-2-7 record from 20 starts. His grandam, Group 1 winner Flamenco Wave, is a daughter of former Washington sire Desert Wine and was bred in partnership by Dan J. Agnew.
Multiple Irish stake winner Declaration of War, a four-year-old son of War Front, took the €40,000 Heritage Stakes over Ireland's Leopardstown course by 2 1/2 lengths on April 14. He is a half-brother to Gibson Thoroughbred Farm's recent stallion addition War Power, The half-brothers' dam Tempo West is a half-sister to 2012 Belmont Stakes (G1) victor Union Rags.
Strawberry Morn, the now 20-year-old daughter of Travelling Victor who won the first race and stakes (US Bank) at Emerald Downs during their 1996 opening season en route to earnings of over $500,000 and is the dam of multiple group winner Strawberrydaquiri, produced a colt by Cacique (Ire) on March 27 and has been rebred to the Grade 1-winning son of Danehill.
Idaho Governor Butch Otter has signed into law a bill that allows "instant" or "historical" wagering in the state. The Idaho HBPA and officials from Les Bois Park were behind the push for the bill in this legislative session. |
At the Farm
Two of the first foals pictured in a March Castleton Lyons ad for three-time champion Gio Ponti have connections to Washington. WTBOA leading sale graduate and Grade 1 winner Smiling Tiger's half-sister and a filly out of Grade 2 stakes winner The Niagara Queen, whose Washington-bred dam, Inspirational (by Lord At War [Arg]), was bred by Rick and Debbie Pabst out of the multiple stakes producer Warna Corna. Inspirational's three-year-old daughter Inspired Exchange, by Exchange Rate, won a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight race by 1 1/2 lengths at Oaklawn Park on March 3.
Holy Nola, the stakes-winning dam of Pulse Ranches' Grade 2 stakes winner and sire Preachinatthebar, produced a filly by Makfi (GB) on March 11 and will be bred back to Equiano (Fr). The 18-year-old daughter of Silver Deputy is owned by Newsells Park Stud.

Stakes winner Super Dixie, a daughter of Dixie Union out of two-time Washington champion Youcan'ttakeme, by He's Tops (all of the four previously mentioned horses were bred by Herman Sarkowsky), produced her second foal, a daughter of Broken Vow, on March 13 and was bred back to Proud Citizen. |
