Smiling Tiger Prevails in Vernon Underwood

Multiple Grade 1 winner Smiling Tiger returned to the winner's circle with a one-length tally in the $100,000 Vernon Underwood Stakes (G3) held at Betfair Hollywood Park on December 2. Coming into the race after a good third in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), Alan Klein and Philip Lebherz's colorbearer won the six-panel race in 1:11.24 with Rafael Bejarano in the saddle.

It was the first win for the five-year-old son of Hold That Tiger-Shandra Smiles, by Cahill Road, since his victory in the Grade 1 Triple Bend Handicap in July 2011. The talented sprinter had been plagued with a breathing problem which put him on the sidelines for the summer and fall.

Bred by Dr. Rodney Orr, Smiling Tiger - a $40,000 2008 WTBOA Summer Sale bargain - has earned $1,480,704 with a record of 9-2-9 in 23 starts.

According to trainer Jeff Bonde, Smiling Tiger came out of the Underwood in good shape, and "If everything goes as planned, he'll start once more, in the [G3] Palos Verdes Stakes [at Santa Anita on January 19] before heading to Dubai."
