Fresh ideas and visuals are the lifeblood of the media business, and as such the pros are always looking out for them. But it can be hard to break out of the rut to create something new if you stay isolated in your locality or routine for too long. That's why global and cultural travel is so important and useful in refreshing the old brain cells and visual cortex.
Recently I traveled to New Zealand for vacation. Fortunately for me I happened to be in Auckland during a unique art show held for only three weeks every other year. Called Sculpture on the Gulf, it takes place on Waiheke Island, a 35-minute ferry ride away. It’s a two-and-a-half kilometer walk along coastal bluffs incorporating contemporary sculpture into a spectacular outdoor setting. The sculpture meshes with the environment and the environment provides a novel context for the art. The overall effect is quite inspiring! Every few meters you see something new and unexpected in a landscape backdrop of hills, sea and distant views of downtown Auckland that changes as you walk.
To see art integrated into the natural beauty and scenery of New Zealand excited and recharged my brain cells!
If I hadn't travelled so far, I might not have seen something this special for a long time. But thanks to video, you get to benefit from my experience: Check out this brief show of my walk and also get invigorated by encountering something new. Maybe it will help generate some new ideas of your own, too. Enjoy!
