Love is In the Air...Or is It??
by

The month of February brings with it beautifully wrapped boxes of chocolates, red M&Ms and even heart-shaped pizzas!  This is the month we celebrate love!  There are conferences on marriages offered, couples announcing their engagements, and more sales in greeting cards--
with some 145 million units sold (second only to Christmas cards), during this month of LOVE. Valentine's Day ranks 8th in the top 10 most favorite holidays in America.  Love is certainly in the air in February...or is it?

While renewed vows and fresh commitments between couples are ignited, there is also much to be said about couples breaking up and relationship struggles.  Struggles that are not easily mended by going out to dinner-out and a movie.  So how does one deal with the gray cloud of rejection or the ongoing drama of unresolved relationship issues?

Albert Ellis (1957) developed a popular theory called Rational Emotive Behavioral Cognitive Therapy (REBCT).  This theory and mode of treatment continues to prove effective today.  His premise is that we all develop some irrational beliefs in our overall worldview and these beliefs can drive both our behaviors and reactions to life's circumstances.  Identifying these irrational beliefs and working toward more realistic assessments can positively impact our responses in difficult situations.  Does it work?

If a breakup occurs after a long engagement, the results for the wounded party can either be discouragement or devastation.  The response to this difficult situation is driven by either a healthy worldview of oneself or an irrational belief that their one-and-only soul mate is lost and they will never be happy again.  It is not the breakup that elicits the response, rather the belief about the breakup and its perceived impact on one's overall well-being.

While difficult experiences can be more complicated, there is hope to be found in the belief that we can survive the hardest of circumstances.  If we are willing to embrace the idea of filtering our responses through a healthier lens, we may find that we can ride the waves of life with more success.  It is certainly worth a second look.  After all, there truly is love in the air...if only we believe.
