Grief & Loss at the Holidays

How to Accept & Decline Holiday Invitations

by Christopher LePage, PsyD, LMSW

The holiday season can be one of great stress and angst for people who are grieving.  Whether through death, divorce, transfer to strange city, or loss of a dream that will never be realized; grief at the holidays can be particularly acute.  Deciding whether or not to accept invitations can just add to stress of loss.  Here are some practical things that you can do to take control of the situation.

First, practice being tentative.  Tentatively accept invitations to events but inform hosts that your attendance is contingent upon whether or not you are feeling up to attending when the day of the event arrives.

Next, if you cannot be absent from something like a child's school activity, agree to attend.  Stay only for the portion that you need to be there.  Then, excuse yourself.  If possible, sit near the exit and always drive yourself so that you can leave quickly and effortlessly if you need to.

Third, avoid the need to explain yourself.  Decline invitations simply with a "thanks, but not, not this year" rather than going on about why you are unable to attend

Finally, if you decide to accept an invitation, avoid over-committing.  For example, don't agree to bring something or participate in a gift exchange if doing so would overwhelm you.  Your presence will be enough for those who care for and love you.

If you or anyone you know needs help
with grief and loss in any form, please contact
