Are You Lonely?? By Leah Ethier, MA, LPC

compass

Loneliness is a universal human emotion, but is experienced uniquely. An elementary aged student having difficulty making friends may feel lonely in a different way than does a spouse who is grieving the death of their significant other. Both are lonely but may have very different perceptions about their relationships with others.

The feeling of loneliness is not necessarily about being alone, but rather a state of mind, or perception, causing one to feel empty or unwanted. For example, a high school freshman might feel lonely despite being surrounded by hundreds of peers. People who are lonely often crave human contact, but their state of mind can make it more challenging to form those desired connections.

It takes courage to confront loneliness and make necessary changes to find relief from its feelings but here are a few suggestions to help get you started.

  • Embrace being alone! Being alone and having a solid sense of self allows us to experience healthier connections with others, lessening dependent relationship patterns.
  • Reach out, don't wait for someone else!  Relationships are reciprocal and take work. Maintain current relationships through regular contact and likewise, reach out to long lost friends or relatives.
  • Get Involved!  Volunteering for a cause or charity is a great way to meet people who are like-minded!
  • Join a support group!  Joining a support group can allow the opportunity to make connections with others who share similar concerns, difficulties, or interests.
  • Get professional help!  Even with these strategies, if your loneliness continues to be overwhelming, you may wish to contact a therapist who can assist you with developing a more comprehensive plan of action.

Perspectives Counseling Centers has a highly trained staff waiting to walk along beside you on the journey.

You Need Not Walk Alone.
