Dear Parent,
Hello and happy October! We have some great activities going on this month, from Family Swim and CPR classes to a spooktacular Trunk-or-Treat. Check it out!
Swim Skill Highlight: Why front floats?

One major aspect of our curriculum is the incorporated safety skills. Our kickers White, Red, and Yellow levels revolve entirely around making students comfortable and safer in the water. Without this foundation of comfort and safety, it would be close to impossible for a student to progress into stroke development and technique with any success.

We have fielded questions in the past why we teach front float before treading water if they are both safety skills. We teach front float as a comfort skill creating better breath control and independence in the water. Breath control with this horizontal floating position builds a foundation for front kicking, and then Freestyle swimming. In truth, treading water is a survival skill and takes a lot of energy to stay above water before students master the hand sculling motion.

In addition to the front float taught in our Red level, we put a lot of time and energy into mastering the back float and rotating from a student's front to back. These are essential safety skills in that is a swimmer ever gets in trouble on their front, they have the skill and know how to rotate on their back to kick and call for help. We have seen and heard countless times where this has made a huge difference. For us, the ability of a swimmer to get into a back float from a horizontal or even a vertical position is a big indicator of comfort.

With these very important foundation skills, a swimmer has a much greater opportunity to be successful when traditional stroke development and technique is introduced starting with the Blue level. They also have a much better chance of staying calm and preventing panic in an emergency situation.....which is really the main purpose of anyone learning to swim!
