A Commissioner's Perspective of Multiple Accreditation

The benefits of being both an agency CEO and a Commissioner include being able to support changes in the accreditation process that simultaneously strengthen accreditation while simplifying task management within the agency. Once CALEA announced that agencies with multiple accreditations would be able to request consolidated assessments, the Newport News Police Department (NNPD) sought approval. As a Tri-Arc agency, the transition required postponing one assessment by a year, moving one up by a year, and the third remained the same. Once this challenging transition period completes, we will enjoy a single on-site assessment every three years for all three programs. The Alameda County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) has been using CALEA accreditation as a means of evaluating its practices and demonstrating accountability since its initial law enforcement accreditation in 1996. The accreditation process and compliance with the battery of standards developed by CALEA has steered ACSO towards our goal to be a leader in the law enforcement community both locally and nationally, gaining recognition for its innovative programs and pioneering new methods in training and agency growth. W. Steven Flaherty, Superintendent
Virginia State Police

For 38 years, Colonel W. Steven Flaherty has proudly served the Commonwealth of Virginia as a public safety professional. Since his appointment to Superintendent on October 1, 2003, Colonel Flaherty has proven himself as an experienced, respected, innovative leader committed to the protection and safety of Virginia's citizens and highways. With three generations of Flaherty's having served among the ranks of the Virginia State Police, Colonel Flaherty is known as a "trooper's trooper" and recognized for his integrity, professionalism, and dedication to mission. Accreditation Enhances Procedural Justice

The Arlington Police Department received the CALEA Tri-Arc Award in March of 2010. Having law enforcement, communications, and training academy program accreditations under one umbrella assist in creating a culture of excellence throughout the entire organization. Being viewed as legitimate in our community is enhanced and externally validated by adherence to the voluntary standards established by CALEA. Citizens benefit from excellent service delivery and ultimately the public is better served by true public safety professionals. Read on.

The Public Safety Secretariat of the State of Baja California, Mexico, (Secretaria de Seguridad Publica - SSPE) is the agency responsible for public safety communications, the preventative police, the academy, the State Personnel Archives, the Center for Evaluation and Control of Trust, the Center for Social Reintegration, and several other administrative departments. The SSPE's goal is to preserve a safe state with confidence, and social peace supported by contributing government sectors, and the community. Read on.

Is your agency currently law enforcement accredited? Have you thought about pursuing additional CALEA accreditation programs for your communications and/or training academy?  
CALEA offers accreditation programming in the areas of law enforcement, training academy, communications, and campus security.Although these are distinct programs that effectively serve stand alone organizations, there are circumstances where a public safety agency may be able to leverage the work in one program to address the requirements of another. The conference hotel, Hyatt Regency Albuquerque, is booked. Reservations at an overflow hotel, DoubleTree by Hilton Albuquerque, are available. Communications Specialist Janice Dixon retired October 31, 2014. Janice joined CALEA over 14 years ago, following a 20 year career in educational publishing. She has contributed to the organization in numerous areas to include: client services, marketing and advertising, public information, conference training, website management, and as editor of CALEA publications. CALEA is appreciative of Janice's contributions. Best wishes to Janice in her future endeavors!

Reminder for Perspective CALEA Client Agencies - CASP

           

Applications for the CALEA Agency Support Program (CASP) are being accepted until December 31, 2014. Recipients for 2015 will be announced at the March CALEA Conference in Reno, Nevada. The purpose of the CASP is to support the professional development of under-funded law enforcement agencies, public safety communications centers, public safety training academies and campus security organizations by offering support to qualified agencies seeking accreditation for the first-time. This program will provide limited waivers to the fees applied by CALEA for agencies to participate in the established accreditation programming. A full description of the CASP, as well as the application form, can be viewed under the Resources tab online.
