Message from the CALEA Chair

How CALEA Accreditation Can Promote a Meaningful Higher Education Experience

J. Grayson Robinson

We have all seen some rendition of the bumper sticker that reads "My daughter/son and my money go to the University/College of (Pick One)" or the strategically placed window decal that identifies the occupant of a vehicle as an alumnus of a specific institution of learning. The direct message of the window decals and bumper stickers reflects a strong sense of pride in association with that institution, but also acknowledges a return on investment for the time, energy, and dollars spent on achieving a level of higher education.

CALEA Accreditation Campus Considerations

W. Craig
Hartley, Jr.

Resources suggest there are nearly 99,000 public schools providing elementary and secondary education in the United States, with nearly 7,700 post secondary institutions.  Data also indicates there are 98 universities in Canada with a collective student population of 1.8 million or approximately 25,000 students at each of these institutions, not considering Canada's colleges and other educational entities. Mexico has four federal universities, 38 institutes of technology, 38 state universities, seven research centers, and about 40 private universities. These types of statistics are almost inconceivable, but critical to understanding the tremendous public safety responsibilities that exists in servicing educational environments. MORE.

Use of Force Policy a Plus for University Police

Gene B. Burton, Director of Public Safety

Ball State University Department of Public Safety
Muncie, Indiana

When the Ball State University Department of Public Safety started the accreditation process in 2005, like many departments, we felt we were doing a good job for our university community, but we wanted to be better. We felt accreditation would help us reach the next level. It has done that and more. The accreditation process provided a clear blue print for applying the best law enforcement practices and a comprehensive review process to insure we followed those practices. The department has been CALEA Law Enforcement Accredited since November 2007. MORE.

College & University Accreditation Coalition and A Note on Cash Funds Standard

Accreditation Coalitions are an important resource for agencies in the accreditation process. They are generally comprised of agencies in the accreditation process or agencies seeking to be a part of the accreditation process. These coalitions can be formed with agencies from a single state or agencies from multiple states that collectively create a powerful regional resource. Additionally, accreditation coalitions are sometimes program specific, which can be value added for those public safety entities that have unique or special service functions. To that end, CALEA is pleased to announce the formation of the College & University Accreditation Coalition. MORE

Correction to Law Enforcement Standards Notification

An email notification was sent to CALEA clients May 7, 2014 concerning an error in PowerDMS™ in the CALEA Standards for Law Enforcement Agencies
Version 5.19, which was released following the March 2014 Conference, contains technical errors related to standard 22.2.7 bullet c and standard 33.6.1 bullet c. Although the language contained in these standards is correct, they do no allow policy or proof of compliance attachments. Because we do not want to disrupt the normal revision process, these errors will be corrected following the July 2014 Conference.
