CALEA Standards - The Source for Professional Discussions

W. Craig
Hartley, Jr.

A codified body of standards for the purpose of professionalism is an incredible resource for public safety service providers and leaders. Standards provide consistency, serve as a risk management and mitigation tool, create opportunities for professional growth, promote accountability, and support organization transparency within the service community. And although all of these attributes are important, one of the most beneficial implications of standards are the discussions standards often generate within agencies as they pursue and maintain CALEA® Accredited status.MORE

CALEA Leadership Profiles

Ronnie J. Bastin
Chief of Police
Lexington, Kentucky Division of Police

Great leaders don't just happen...that's the Lexington Division of Police philosophy. Since taking the helm in 2008, Chief Ronnie J. Bastin has dedicated significant resources to cultivating leadership in all areas of the agency. Chief Bastin knows this investment will pay dividends beyond the walls of the agency. "Police have more impact on quality of life than any other agency in the community. Therefore, it is imperative that we take our responsibility to develop leaders very seriously. To do less would leave the development of future agency leaders to chance, and that's a risk we cannot afford to take", says Bastin. To get the job done Chief Bastin and division command staff have created a robust and multifaceted leadership development program that is changing the way business is done inside and outside of the departmentMORE

Editorial Note: CALEA Leadership Profiles features CEOs among  many of the  exceptional leaders involved in CALEA programming that provide inspiring leadership to their agency, to other CALEA agencies, and to the public safety profession. Agencies are encouraged to nominate additional leaders by submitting their names and profiles to CALEA E-Communique Editor Janice Dixon at jdixon@calea.org.

SRIC Actions
- Garden Grove Conference
At the March 2014 meeting in Garden Grove, California, the Commission's Standards Review and Interpretation Committee (SRIC) approved a number of revisions to the CALEA Standards. These changes have been published in the latest versions of the PowerDMS™ Standards Lite application of the CALEA electronic publications. View a summary of the standards affected.

Compliance with CALEA Standards for Data Security
With the addition of the newly enacted CALEA Standards for data security, our partner, PowerDMS™, is in the process of reviewing their contractual agreements in order to fully comply with the new standards. They are reviewing the language and should have the new information available for their clients within the next two months. They are planning on including a "compliance crosswalk" so that agencies may easily find the applicable language in the new documents that will be used to prove compliance.

Remember that this is not necessary if agencies are only using the PowerDMS™ Lite service that provides access to the electronic standards manuals; but, it is required if the PowerDMS™ Standards module or full PowerDMS™ suite is used.
