Message from the CALEA Chair
Life is Constantly Changing
J. Grayson Robinson

Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus once said, "The only thing constant is change."  CALEA has experienced what may be described as an historical rate of change recently. There has been the implementation of the Gold Standard Assessment (GSA) process and other modifications to long-standing assessment protocols, additional new programming and organizational accreditation opportunities, and staffing changes and the regionalization of program manager responsibilities. And in December 2013, Executive Director Sylvester Daughtry and CALEA Chair Louis Dekmar retired. It would seem CALEA was living up to Heraclitus's pronouncement and was certainly experiencing consistent and exceptional change! Read more

Keeping CALEA Accreditation Recognized as the Mark of Professional Excellence

W. Craig Hartley, Jr.
Several weeks ago I was honored with the opportunity to serve as a guest speaker for the 140th Trooper Candidate Class graduation of the Maryland State Police. This commencement exercise recognized the achievement of 67 new troopers who were transitioning to the field training portion of their professional development curriculum. The ceremony included the traditional process of pinning badges on the new troopers and providing them the opportunity to be acknowledged for the many months of hard work that proceeded this symbolic and important occasion. The graduation was a genuine celebration that allowed family and friends to share with pride the success of these new Maryland State Troopers. Read more.

Accreditation Built on Collecting "People" Proofs

Sergeant Fred M. Neiman

Accreditation Manager
Clark County (WA) Sheriff's Office

"Accreditation is pretty much just a paper chase, isn't it?" a colleague remarked as we visited over lunch one day and the conversation turned to my duties as accreditation manager. "There is a fair amount of paper involved, alright," I answered, thinking of the many times I'd rummaged through the squad room briefing basket and how I no longer passed by a bulletin board without giving it a quick look over. I had even caught myself occasionally snooping through mail box slots, grabbing a quick copy of an item of interest and discretely returning the original, all in search of potential paper proofs of compliance. "But," I continued, "I prefer to think of my job more in terms of collecting people, not just paper." Read more.

Accreditation Management - Taking a Fresh Look

The start of a new year normally implies new beginnings and resolutions. For many agencies, the new year also brings about a change of accreditation managers. However, in the world of accreditation, work is continuous and we do not normally take the time to review and update our work plans. Whether we do it at the start of the year or during the year, it is a good idea to annually reevaluate and revise, if necessary, the activities related to the accreditation process. Although not all inclusive, among some of the issues to consider are the application of new and revised standards, collection of proofs, department policy updates, and time sensitive activities. Following are a few pointers and reminders as we move into the new year. Read more.
