Farewell Message from Executive Director Daughtry

Sylvester Daughtry, Jr.
I have had the honor and privilege of serving as the Executive Director of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Incorporated (CALEA®) for 15 years. It has truly been a rewarding experience that seemed to go by very fast. I extend my appreciation to the current and past Boards of CALEA Commissioners with whom I have had the pleasure of working.

My work with CALEA began as an assessor, serving on assessment teams for Fairfax County, Virginia, Alexandria, Virginia, and Houston, Texas. I was appointed a CALEA Commissioner in 1991, serving on Commission Boards chaired by Gerald Williams and Ronald Nelson. I had the privilege of chairing the Commission for 1996, 1997, and 1998. As Executive Director, I have served during the Commission Chair administrations of William Miller, Stephen Monier, James O'Dell, and Louis Dekmar. Each of the boards, past and present, were compiled of outstanding professionals who were committed to enhancing the professional standing of public safety agencies through the use of internationally recognized standards and the CALEA accreditation process. CALEA Leadership Profiles

Gregory J. Ahern

Sheriff-Coroner, Alameda County, California

Gregory J. Ahern was elected to the Office of Sheriff in Alameda County, California in June 2006. Sheriff Ahern continues a tradition of excellence which was initiated by Charles C. Plummer that reaches back to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office first CALEA® Law Enforcement Accreditation in August 1996. Sheriff Ahern has challenged his staff to constantly improve the quality of service delivered to the communities in Alameda County. CALEA remains a guiding light for providing professional law enforcement services by members of the sheriff's office.

Sheriff Ahern is a lifelong resident of Alameda County. He graduated from Moreau Catholic High School in 1975, and went on to obtain a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Administration from St. Mary's college in Moraga, California. He was hired as a deputy sheriff in 1980, and he worked his way through the ranks before being elected as the 22nd Sheriff of Alameda County. In 2003, Sheriff Ahern became a proud graduate of the 215th Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy. He continued his professional training at Nesh-Ar training institute for counter-terrorism in Jerusalem, Israel. Read more

Multiple Accreditations

An Opportunity to Achieve the CALEA® TRI-ARC Award

Have you considered working toward acquiring the CALEA® TRI-ARC designation, but are apprehensive about the file management required? Have you avoided undertaking Public Safety Communications Accreditation, along with your Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation, because you would have to build and maintain 218 more files? If the answer to either of these is yes, then we have a plan for you!

At the November 2013 CALEA Conference, the Commission approved a new, streamlined strategy for agencies to achieve multiple accreditations. Although the strategy is not for everyone, it might just be what your agency needs to improve the comprehensiveness of the accreditation process. If your agency is accredited at the Advanced Law Enforcement level, and you have communications or the training academy as an included subsidiary function of your agency, this is the plan for you. Program Managers' Corner
Addressing New and Existing Standards

Accreditation Managers should take notice of the new CALEA® Law Enforcement Standard 46.1.10 concerning active threats, which was approved at the
November 2013 CALEA Conference in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Lessons learned over the past several years have caused public safety agencies to rethink operational tactics related to active threat situations. Even though agencies generally have one year to comply with new standards, the nature of this standard should make it a priority for implementation to ensure compliance within the year. This is a mandatory standard for all agencies. Read more.

The Northern New England Police Accreditation Coalition (NNEPAC) is proud to officially announce its new accreditation training resource - NNEPAC Radio. This is an audio podcast with the content geared towards CALEA accreditation managers, assessors and practitioners.

The impetus for creating NNEPAC Radio came from a desire to share training content with NNEPAC members who could not make monthly meetings, as well as with members of other PACs. Additionally, the back catalog of episodes is accessible by new members of the PAC or anyone new to accreditation. See the announcement here.
