Message from the Chair
The Role of CALEA Commissioner - An Integral Component for a Successful Accreditation Model

Louis M. Dekmar
As CALEA's Chairperson, I am frequently provided the opportunity to speak about public safety accreditation and its impact on the law enforcement, communications, training, and campus security professions. Because accreditation is a professional passion for me, I always embrace these opportunities and strive to ensure each public safety leader I contact has an appreciation of the initial and continuing value of the process.

Fellow Commissioners are also often asked to address others about CALEA's Accreditation model and invariability approach these engagements with vigor and enthusiasm. I am forever reminded of each CALEA Commissioner's genuine support of the process, as the respective positions are voluntary and all serve without any compensation. In fact, most Commissioners meet their CALEA obligations while continually addressing the requirements of their full-time positions.   Read more.
CALEA Leadership Profiles

Chief Dennis Koletsos

Northlake, Illinois Police Department

Chief Dennis Koletsos is a 40-year police veteran. He began his career as a patrol officer for the Wood Dale, Illinois Police Department, and during his 21-year career there, he worked his way through the ranks and was Deputy Chief for the last 8 years. While at Wood Dale, he was tasked with beginning the CALEA accreditation process, which was then in its formative stages and just beginning to gain recognition as a credentialing program. He began to see how the accreditation process could be used to direct an agency, and came to appreciate the value of having national standards to guide an agency's written directives. (Wood Dale Police Department has been CALEA law enforcement accredited since July 2001 and communications accredited since November 2003
).  Read more.

Editorial Note: CALEA Leadership Profiles is a new feature for the newsletter. We want to recognize some of the many exceptional leaders involved in CALEA programming that provide inspiring leadership to their agency, to other CALEA agencies, and to the public safety profession. Agencies are encouraged to nominate additional leaders by submitting their names and profiles to CALEA E-Communiqué Editor Janice Dixon at jdixon@calea.org.

Revisiting the CALEA® Process and Programs Guide

CALEA® constantly strives to provide agencies with the best information and resources available in gaining or maintaining their accredited status.  This month's column focuses on the much overlooked and underutilized CALEA® Process and Programs Guide.

The CALEA® Process and Programs Guide (CPPG) is designed as a single instructional manual to accompany all of the CALEA credentialing programs.  In June 2013, Version 2.0 was launched, which updated the manual to reflect current information.  The CPPG serves as a "how to" guide for new clients, or anyone seeking to understand the CALEA accreditation process, as well as a reference tool for accreditation managers or CALEA assessors.  The CPPG is the primary resource, in conjunction with CALEA conference training and local Public Safety Accreditation Coalitions (PAC) training, for how to organize, design, and manage the accreditation process.  Read more.
