Professionalism, stewardship, integrity, diversity, independence, continuous improvement, objectivity, credibility, consistency, knowledge, experience, accountability, and collaboration are the primary cornerstones that distinguishes CALEA from all other forms of public safety accreditation. |

Louis M. Dekmar CALEA Chair
The close of each year always serves as a time for reflection and an opportunity to consider what is possible in the year to come. Unquestionably, CALEA® experienced tremendous growth in 2012 and the Commission worked diligently to provide a number of new options for agencies participating in accreditation programming. Many accomplishments occurring over the past year were the direct result of strategic planning efforts, each directed toward CALEA remaining the preeminent resource in public safety accreditation. Areas of focus specifically included (1) Program Development & Enhancement; (2) Recruitment & Retention; (3) Communications; and (4) New Business. The following serve as highlights from the year: Read more.

Client-to-Peer Recruitment Incentive Program
CALEA Announces New Program for 2013 & 2014
The process of CALEA® Accreditation is not for every agency. In fact, it is really only for those agencies that strive to be the very best public safety service providers. It takes strong leadership, staff support, and a willingness to change. It also takes a commitment to serve as an advocate for the process in the broader public safety community.
CALEA wants to acknowledge representatives from enrolled agencies and active CALEA Assessors who serve as strong CALEA ambassadors by recruiting new agencies to enroll in CALEA Accreditation. To that end, the Commission has approved the Client-to-Peer Recruitment Incentive, effective January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2014. Read more.

Sheriff Rutherford
|
Kudos to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office for hosting a spectacular conference! From providing attendees transportation to and from the airport, to sponsoring a fun-filled Host Night "Country Carnival" at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds, to hosting a Hospitality Suite each night for attendees to enjoy, Sheriff John Rutherford and his staff went "above and beyond" ensuring the conference was a success. Thanks to all for an outstanding job!
A milestone of note - The Hawaii County Police Department, Hilo, Hawaii, was the 1000th agency to receive CALEA Law Enforcement Accreditation! The Jacksonville Conference was the last for Commissioner James N. Robey, who will complete his third and final term as a CALEA Commissioner at the end of the year. Commissioner Robey is the Senator for the 13th District of Maryland. Previously he served as Howard County Executive for two terms after retiring in 1998 as Chief of Police of the Howard County (MD) Department of Police, a CALEA Law Enforcement Accredited agency since July 1990.
Commissioner Robey has served in many capacities over the past nine years; currently he is the Commission Treasurer, is a member of the Corporate Affairs Committee, the CASP Committee, and is Chair of Review Committee A. Commissioner Robey has devoted much time and considerable effort to the Commission; his commitment to CALEA and to public safety excellence is without parallel. His wisdom and good humor will be missed by all. Click here for the Jacksonville Awards List. For a list of agencies receiving Meritorious Accreditation, click here. For a list of agencies receiving Accreditation with Excellence, click here. Note to Attendees Needing Training Certificates! The link to the Jacksonville Conference page will remain available on the CALEA website until the end of December 2012. If you have not yet requested Training Certificates for the classes you attended, please do so now.

Program Manager's Corner
Applicability of Law Enforcement Chapter 91 - Campus Law Enforcement
One of the most important attributes of the CALEA® Accreditation process is that it is constantly evolving to address the needs of the public safety community. This includes new assessment tools, programming options and standards which work to ensure the process remains contemporary and value-added for those that participate. As an example, CALEA revised the Standards for Law Enforcement Agencies almost two years ago to include Chapter 91- Campus Law Enforcement.Since that time, a number of questions have emerged concerning the chapter's applicability for those law enforcement agencies participating in CALEA Accreditation.
