Susan Marocco Interiors

May 2013

Greetings!

Recently, a client of mine asked me to update their master bedroom - new drapery, bedding, carpeting, and painting. However, while I was accessing their bedroom and their needs, a fabulous opportunity presented itself to transform the room from expected to WOW!

Are you underutilizing one of the coziest features in your home?

As I begin any project, one of the most important steps is to spend a great deal of time with my clients asking them lots of questions - how do you plan to use this room, who uses the room, how do you envision the outcome, and so many more. It is very important to clearly understand the objectives of the client so that we can work together to achieve a creative design solution.

In this circumstance, as I stood in their bedroom, I noticed a fireplace that was not being used, despite the fact that they had lived in the home for many years. I probed and asked why. As expected - lugging the firewood upstairs created a trail of loose bark. And, as much as a fire is inviting, there is always the concern of embers still being “live” before closing the light. So there was not much time to really enjoy the fireplace in a bedroom.

Since the client had gas already coming into the home, the solution was easy! But before we could address the actual install of the gas, some cosmetic changes were made.

Installing the marble

The red brick surround and hearth was replaced with a more soothing Crema Marfil marble.

Fireplace after

The gas line was brought up from the basement thru the walls and into an adjacent closet.

Plumber

A mirror and accessories for the fireplace mantel were purchased.

A chair was re-upholstered with a complementary pillow.

Now, the clients spend time enjoying their fireplace - reading a book or relaxing sipping a cup of tea.

Ask the Designer

Q: How Do you know if a chair or sofa is a good candidate for reupholstery?

A: It should be a solid, well-built piece of furniture. If it was originally constructed with quality materials and has historical, antique or sentimental value. The frame should be a strong maple that is double-dowled and glued versus staple-gunned or screwed.
