November 2012

Greetings!

It’s been a challenging time throughout the Northeast. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by Hurricane Sandy. We wish you, your families and friends continued safety, and hope your lives are returning back to normal.

Is Your Family Room Comfy For 3 Generations?

Recently I was asked to redesign a family room for a family that frequently had Grandparents, Parents and two young children share the same home. They wanted the space to be comfortable for the multi-generations without turning it into a playroom, but at the same time accessible for the kids to play with their toys.

This month we will take you thru the steps of how we designed this family room.

The existing space had previously been the garage, but had been converted to a family room a number of years ago. However, the floor was still stone. The picture molding on the walls dated the space and a new wall color definitely had to be chosen.

Before

The stone floor was taken up and the floor prepared to lay down wide plank flooring.

Comfy sofa’s, chairs and ottomans were all purchased. The fabrics were all protected with “fiber seal” so the family didn’t have to fret over crayon marks or red wine spilling! A silver leaf glass coffee table provided storage underneath for books, magazines or games. A game table was placed behind one of the sofa's for adult and children games.

Chairs were selected that rock and swivel so they have the flexibility to be included in the main conversation area or swivel to watch TV.

The ottomans open for added storage for the children’s toys. Most importantly, they were designed to have slow closing hinges so no fingers get pinched. Extra large pillows were placed on the floor to act as “chairs” for the grandchildren.

Ask the Designer

Q: How can I protect fabrics from the day to day stains - children coloring “outside of the lines” or worse - red wine spilling?

A: I use a company called Fiber Seal. They will come to your home and apply a sealant that will protect your fabrics with an 18-month guarantee. Any spills, they will, at no additional costs, come back to your home (212-888-1070). Ask for Beverly and tell them I sent you.
