Derby District Welcomes New Businessderbywelcome
A Good Shop Inc., recently purchased a 7,200 sq. ft. building at 7350 Highway 2, to expand their automotive body shop business into Commerce City.

"I grew up in Commerce City the first six years of my life and went to Monaco Elementary," said Good Shop owner Alan Sturm. "We are excited to be moving into the area and create trust within the community that will surpass the average body shop expectations."

The company is investing more than $150,000 in capital improvements and will create five new jobs immediately, with an additional five planned as the business grows.

According to the third quarter Economic Activity Report the number of city businesses is increasing, as are the number of jobs being created in the community. Housing growth also slowed this quarter as the number of shovel-ready lots decline. As a result, the city has experienced significant growth in the number of zoning and land use activity for new subdivisions. The report is prepared quarterly by Development Research Partners on behalf of the city's economic development division to track trends on major economic indicators for the city. Infrastructure investments are driving opportunities for economic development and growth throughout the city. Learn more about some of the key projects under way:
  • The final phase of 104th Avenue is nearing substantial completion, with all lanes of traffic scheduled to open in December. This phase will complete the four-lane connection between Highway 85 and E-470. Funded by the northern range general improvement district, the project includes new road lanes, a new storm sewer system, curb and gutter, and a pedestrian underpass.
  • Design of the voter-approved expansion of Tower Road is complete, with construction bids being sought in January. The project expands Tower Road from two to four lanes between 80th and 104th avenues to improve safety, increase vehicle capacity, and accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles.
  • With agreements between the City of Commerce City, Denver International Airport and City & County of Denver intact, environmental and design work for the Tower Road on-ramp to westbound Pena Boulevard project is expected early next year, with construction following.
  • The Highway 2 widening project will expand the busy two-lane road to a four-lane road from 72nd Avenue to Interstate 76 and expand pedestrian and bicycle access. Design and engineering activities are underway and funding for the project was made available through a grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation and city funds. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2016.

Aerotropolis to Benefit Commerce Cityaerotropolis

With voters approving  Measure 1A in Adams County and Denver, implementation of a regional Aerotropolis can begin in earnest.
An aerotropolis is a metropolitan subregion where the layout, infrastructure, and economy are centered on and around an airport. Commerce City Economic Development Director Michelle Claymore joined Jeff Fegan, former chief executive officer for Dallas Fort Worth, and other economic development professionals in the region to discuss the benefits and opportunities available for regional planning around new development on and around Denver International Airport (DIA).
