ATRC Fellow, Olesya Narmuratova's from Republic of Tajikistan is one of the participants of Empower Access Program of the U.S. State Department, a program for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) or those who work with PWDs.  She works with PWDs and is visually impaired and currently works in Tajikistan for Japanese NGO called Association for Aid and Relief, Japan (AAR Japan).  Since 2001, she is working to support families and individuals with disabilities.

Because there is a lack of assistive technology (AT) and devices for PWDs, Olesya was assigned to ATRC by the U.S. State Department to complete her fellowship.  When she returns home, she plans on introducing all the new technology that PWDs can use to get information to be equal with other people.  She hopes to conduct meetings with representatives of Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, Ministry of Education and other related to disability organizations to let them know about what the world now offers to PWDs.

ATRC President/CEO Barbara Fischlowitz-Leong was a Fellow invited by the Turkish government in April through a program sponsored by the European Union and U.S. State Department.

Barbara worked with disability groups in the Nilufer Region, which includes the fourth largest city in Turkey and in Ankara, the capital.  She was invited to meet with members of Parliament as well, to discuss disability topics including education, assistive technology, cultural interpretation of disability and how our two countries can work together to better improve conditions in education, employment and independent living for persons with disabilities.

Her host, Umut Berker Semilos spent time in the U.S. including a month's experience in Hawaii working at both the Lt. Governor's Office and at ATRC.  This well respected and sponsored exchange focuses on governance and specific topics, and in this case disability issues will continue to lead to better opportunities for persons with disabilities.

While this particular exchange was out of the ordinary as disability had never before been included, it meshes with a new pilot program called Empower Access.  See the article about Olesya Navmuratova, working with us at ATRC this month from Tajikistan.

Young Adults with Autism
Thrive in High-Tech Jobs

Individuals with Autism often have their deficits targeted for intervention, but organizations are taking a fresh look and using methods that target strengths instead of weaknesses, transforming lives in the process.  "Although [Andrew] can't tie his shoes or buckle his belt to do a lot of things independently, he can do technology," Moore says. "He's a digital native."  Individuals with autism may face barriers to high-tech educational opportunities, but NPR reports how this new approach is being used in the private sector to train autistic individuals to perform advanced and high-tech jobs, and how these individuals are being employed in the workforce.  http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2013/04/22/177452578 featuring http://www.npitx.org as an organization actively recruiting autistic individuals for high tec training and employment, and http://www.alliancedata.com as an organization seeking autistic individuals for high tech positions.
