Goldberg Richman Composite

November 2015

In November Upstream offers two strong new shows from gallery artists Richman and Goldberg.  Susan Richman continues her exploration of the evanescent inTransient, a body of work that emerged from her earlier explorations of abandoned buildings,Trespass.  (Trespass will be on view at the Village Hall Gallery, Hastings Municipal Building from Nov. 12th through Jan. 18th 2016.)

In his most recent work, Mitchell Goldberg uses Collage, Encaustic and Glass as mediums to explore the emotional content of body image, male friendship, desire and loneliness.

Upstream is also very pleased to welcome two new artists to our roster: Enrico Giordano and Madeline Wilson.  Giordano is a widely exhibited abstract painter and print maker who is currently Associate Professor and Chair of the Art Department at Mount Saint Vincent College.  Wilson, a founding member of Upstream from inception to 1994, returns to the gallery this year.  She is currently Chair of the Art Department at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry.

Come meet the artists, old and new, at the opening reception for Richman and Goldberg on Sunday, November 8th from 2-5 pm.

Transient

"Transient: not lasting long or passing quickly into and out of existence...

Transient
is a series that pays homage to faded memory. All photographs were created in camera. Similar to a mirage, the images move in and out of existence and unless captured and preserved may be lost forever."

Mitchell Goldberg
Collages

"Fragments of memories, dreams and fantasies form the core of my collage work. Using magazines from the 1930s through the 1990s, I layer images of male figures, vintage automobiles and flashes of color to evoke feelings surrounding gay male sexuality.  I explore inner emotions related to body image, male camaraderie, desire and loneliness. Individual characters will often appear disconnected from crowds surrounding them, some comfortable with that, others distressed by it.

Altered, rewritten and distorted are the way I prefer to express my memories, making memory indistinguishable from fantasy. I love the old images from the 50s with groups of young men working on their cars, and I wonder about the close friendships they must have had. As a life long old car enthusiast, I love the cars too. These visions are not my own personal memories, but I like to pretend that they are."

New Artists:  Enrico Giordano

Giordano: " My work is reflective of world events, issues, the environment and childhood memories.  Architecture, acoustic surroundings and mythology play major roles.  However, I create each piece with the knowledge that viewers play an important part by bringing their unique interpretations to each work.

Wilson, Red Seats, Photograph

New Artists: Madeline Wilson

Wilson: "Photographing these sites is a solitary venture. When I walk, my boots crunch through broken glass and years of dust and decay. These sounds amplify my interruption, my intrusion on the space and they remind me to act with grace and deference to what happened here when the place was alive.

These empty places are reminders of our past, monuments to our future.  They are a testament to our fears. They exist in a limbo outside the lines and behind the facade of prosperity--- a map of our collective cultural psyche in the year 2015.
