May 2015

Monica Bradbury and Sondra Gold will show their newest work together this month.  Both artists are  exploring the relationships among natural forms and metal constructs.  Bradbury's bold views of nature and the bridges over the Hudson are emotionally charged, yet formal in their balance and placement.  Gold's highly conceptual flat wall sculptures give way to a sinuous use of bronze to evoke human movement and dance.

Join us for the opening reception on Sunday, May 3rd from 2-5pm to meet the artists and enjoy a short afternoon concert by singer Jason Breslin at 3 pm.   Breslin graduated from Marshall College as a music major and sings bass with the Westchester Choral Society.

Landscape Variations: Rocks and Water, Water and Steel

"For me, being a landscape painter means making many choices which in turn lead to more choices which involve even more decisions.  This process stops when I've "painted myself into a corner" and there is only one way out.

Twelve years ago I moved to the Adirondacks and changed from a summer vacationer to a year-round resident.  I knew I had to capture this landscape, so I chose a vertical format because it more or less dictates what to do. It also gave me a narrow, concentrated view of the energy released by the battle between water and the rocks confining its path to the sea."

New Works

" I am interested in dance, and many of my sculptures grow out of dance motions.  I abstract the body, leaving the motion.  Bronze is a wonderful medium for this, with its ability to hold the weight of a piece on a small footing and its organic beauty.  Bronze allows you to make shapes that start as sharp and become round; a straight line can curve, and solids become negatives.

With copper sheets, the material dictates what can be done.  This means being more attentive to positive and negative spaces and how they slide into one another. Shadows become a part of the sculpture.
