December 2014

Upstream is pleased to present Rachel Weatherford Whitlow's first solo show at the gallery.  In From Memory, Whitlow explores her artistic roots in family, place and  practice. Her expressive landscapes create an evocative sense of reality abstracted and remembered worlds without losing their connection to the physical.

Our December Group Show in the West gallery offers a wide range of smaller works from the rest of our gallery roster.  This month we are also excited to participate in the inaugural "Village Crawl", a Friday Night Live event dedicated to raising funds for the Hastings Food Pantry on Friday, December 5th from 6-10 pm.

Stop by on Friday the 5th for the Village Crawl.  And next week come meet Ms. Whitlow at the artist's reception on Sunday, December 14th from 1-4 pm.

Whitlow says of this work: " The drama of the Maine coast often makes me feel that the forces of nature are in active conversation with me. The landscape here is both contemplative and sublime, grand yet intimate.  In my work, I aim to transcribe those feelings as one would in music, to give voice more to a sense of rhythm and flux than to form a realistic composition.

This coast also carries the memory of all the artists from whom I've learned: my grandmother, my grandfather, my mother, artists on Monhegan and colleagues at the gallery today.  All of them resonate in my work."

About Upstream: Since 1991 Upstream has been a unique community of arts professionals whose members work together cooperatively.  Artist members look to Upstream as a venue for experimentation, mutual support and artistic growth. In that spirit, we engage with other artists through a regular program of juried and invitational exhibits. The gallery embraces all fine arts media and all styles from realism to abstraction. Upstream is an established resource for new or experienced art collectors, as well as area curators, designers and art consultants.

The current artist members work in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, collage / assemblage, print-making and photography.  Styles range from the representational to the abstract.  Members have shown in a wide variety of venues throughout the United States and Europe. Upstream encourages artists to submit their work for review.  Submissions are reviewed on a monthly basis.
