October 2014

October brings us first time solo shows at Upstream from recent members Dora Tomulic and Louise Cadoux, both of whom offer very different approaches to the use of form, perspective and narrative.  Tomulic's "compositions are dominated by metamorphic geometry of intertwined swirling patterns."

Cadoux's slyly funny, narrative sculptures and paintings make use of simple forms, primary colors and everyday materials to create a language of contemplation about the world and our place in it.

Please join us to meet the artists at our opening reception, Sunday, October 12th from 2-5 pm.

Event Horizon

Tomulic writes: "Event Horizon is a point of no

return, where two simultaneous versions of reality challenge our perception of the world. It is the last frontier before the ultimate pulling power of destruction. Transformation builds on the cycles of destruction and creation, and the exploration of these primordial themes is where my research of motion begins.

Patterns of motion have always been fundamental to my work. Recent paintings are explorations of how to visualize the cycle of forces of creation and destruction in the Universe. My process itself reflects complexity within this cycle of forces. While balancing between control and chance through many layers of paint and collage, I create and destruct the painting and eventually bring out the composition out of the chaos of the surface.

These works are thought experiments on structure while pushing the boundaries into the realm of chaos. I consider chaos as a prerequisite for a new creation, which seeks an intervention to be controlled and finally brought to order."

Louise Cadoux
New Work

Cadoux's new paintings and sculptures are about the things of the world simplified and distilled. Her vocabulary is built on Red rocks, white water, green organics and the blue of planets.

In this work, everything is in motion; only the sculptures of Atlas and Mother Earth remain stable and stationary.
