September 2014

Upstream opens its 2014-2015 exhibition season with solo shows by Ed Lessing and  Maralyn Matlick.  Lessing's disarmingly gentle watercolors often deal with his childhood experiences during WW II and the hardships of being a survivor.  Matlick's vigorous abstractions intriguingly convey the natural landscape from which they are drawn.

Come meet the artists at their opening reception Sunday, September 14th
from 2-5 pm.

Ed Lessing

An Interesting Life: 50 year Retrospective

Lessing was born in the Netherlands.  As a youngster, he and his family were forced into hiding in the Dutch countryside, surviving the war with great effort.  After living in the US and then Israel for a number of years, he and his wife and daughter returned to the United States, where he graduated from Pratt Institute in Industrial Design.  After a long career as a successful graphic designer, Ed has now turned to a new medium, watercolor.

Lessing's watercolors often reflect his wartime memories, and his simplified figurative work conveys a sense of the childhood that informs those memories.  Underneath the surface, there is a denser, more adult perspective, conveyed by strong graphic composition and sophisticated use of color.

Maralyn Matlick
Circadian Rythm: Abstract Paintings of the Temporal World

Matlick's new work explores the cycle of life as it flows through a 24 hour day.  Her expressionistic approach to the natural world arises from her perspective: " I am much more interested in the essence and feeling of my subject than the subject itself" says Brooklyn born Matlick.

Matlick has won numerous awards for her work. Her paintngs have appeared in newspapers and magazines including The Palette, among others.  She is also an artist member of the Salmagundi Club in Manhattan, where two of her paintings were on view in August.
