JUNE 2014

In June Upstream features painters Dave & Joan Rappaport in a two person show along with TB Ward's inaugural solo show at the gallery.  Brother and sister Dave & Joan Rappaport's work could not be more different on the surface, yet both share an exquisite sense of how a simple line can define an image.  Dave's mysterious, highly detailed monochrome watercolors continue his exploration of Monhegen Island, as well as creating a tribute to all who have served our country in the armed forces. Joan's meticulously crafted drawings explode with subtle color, invoking a kinetic sense of the landscape around her.

British born TB Ward doesn't allow himself to be seduced by a preconceived notion of how
it should look when he begins a piece.  Instead, he uses an iterative process of creative trial and evaluation to determine the final outcome.  His witty, large scale mixed media work is underpinned by his fine sense of place, strong composition and subtle use of color.

Please join us for the opening reception on Sunday, June 1st, from 2-5 pm.

Recent Works

Rappaport's recent work celebrates both nature and man through his use of monochrome watercolor.  In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Landing, he has created watercolor portraits of soldiers in action that offer an intriguing contrast to the serenity of his Monhegan paintings. His fine lines and superb use of light are evident in both bodies of work.  He will be donating a portion of the proceeds from sales during this show to ECAD's (Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities) Project Heal, which provides specially trained service dogs to Veterans of war.

Recent Works

Since her first visit to Monhegan Island, ME in 1979, Joan Rappaport has spent more and more time there.  Originally a large Color Field painter, working in oil, the Monhegan landscape drove her to shift to a more intimate art form. "My Works have evolved, and continue to evolve using crow quill pen & ink, watercolor and fine archival papers."

Through her use of line and color, Rappaport's work performs the difficult feat of being at once highly abstract yet somehow clearly embedded in a brilliantly active physical reality.

TB WARD
Line Up In Line

Of his work, Ward says: "The line tells the story.  I start with a notion of the natural landscape and then allow for any deviation, such as thoughts of man-made structures... I look for line, whether it is made in pencil, a scratch on a surface or a piece of manipulated wire.

I embrace creative accidents and don't allow for my own particular tastes to become a barrier on the path towards the outcome of a piece.  The repetition of the process and the responses I make to each step must culminate in a balanced, harmonious piece."

Introducing Jurek Kubina

Polish born Jurek (Jerzy) Kubina trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow Poland in the Department of Painting.  He has exhibited widely in Europe and the Americas, including CPS Gallery in NYC, Museum Convento de Carmen in Gudelajara, Mexico, BWA in Zamosc PL, Modern Art Gallery in LA and the Chelsea Museum, NYC among many others.

His work is informed by a profound sense of the spiritual and an existential sense of  changing realities.  His recent work combines an evanescent landscape of color with strong abstraction that, intriguingly, comes to seem very much a real place in the world.
