May 2014

Painters Allen M Hart and Cecily Spitzer  bring two very different visions to Upstream in their Solo Shows for May.  Hart's dark vision of a medieval world illuminates his inner life.  Spitzer's lyrical abstraction is a constant that unites all her work.

Come meet the artists at the opening reception on Sunday, May 4th, from 2-5 pm.

 Allen M Hart

The Inner Self

"Art to me is an adventure in which I attempt to unearth the darker realm of consciousness with irony and the absurd. My recent work consists of a combination of colored glass, ink, oil and acrylic paint mounted on canvas using Gothic images which respond to truth rather than manifest beauty. These paintings have a direct connection to my Book Art in which I explore my life in graphic terms."

Hart has exhibited nationally and internationally and is in many museum collections and private collections in the U.S. Europe and Mexico. He has exhibited his "Beastiary"  and "Orchestra of the Damned"at  Dalet Gallery in Philadelphia in 2011-12.  His Book Art is in the rare book collection of the Harry Ransom Museum in Austin, Texas.

Paintings Old and New

In this exhibit, Spitzer revisits early work in the context of her more recent work.  In doing so, she highlights both the evolution of her language and the constancy of her eye.

Spitzer's work is always a response to the natural world.  Strong gestural forms drawn from reality make her abstraction more powerful.
