April 2014

In April we present two very different approaches to the human form. Mitchell Goldberg's Variations explores the relationships among figurative drawing, texture and abstraction, reinterpreting each through printmaking, glass and collage.

Susan Richman's new work explores the tough question of body image with sensitivity and a strong sense of form.  Her recent large scale black and white photographs propose the nude as a form of abstraction, yet remain intensely personal.

We invite you to meet the artists at the opening reception Sunday, March 30th, from 2-5pm.

Variations

"Variations" is an exploration of thematic repetition and reinterpretation in Glass, Printmaking and Collage.

Figurative drawing and total abstraction establish opposite design concepts that are ultimately united  in transparent layers. Male figure studies are presented with and without their abstract layers, creating an interesting dialogue. Young male characters are also repeated and combined in different pairs, demonstrating another aspect of variation. Paper collages are recreated as photo etchings and once again create a new interpretation of the original idea

Under Glass

My recent work is a study of the human body. Playing with the transparent properties of glass and shooting from the outside in, I'm challenging our neurotic tendencies to assess ourselves.

I photographed my subjects to achieve a beautiful distortion of flesh forced against glass. Like viewing biological specimens under a microscopic slide, we're able to acknowledge the tensions between surface and form.

My brave subjects are peers who have accepted and embraced their age and glorious imperfections. Working with them has been inspirational.
