November 2013

November brings us two masters of color with new work from Arline Simon and Jerry Vis.  Simon's use of color often shares the bold planar quality of Fauvism with an extra dimension of strong narrative content.  Vis' brilliant dense color is visually energizing, while his sometimes loose, informal design elements offer a strong contrast to his more representational work.

Come join us to celebrate with Simon and Vis at the opening reception, Sunday, November 10th from 2-5 pm.

New Work

Vis' early work as an artist was mostly three dimensional, using natural materials for site specific pieces, often political in nature.  Gradually, his work became more personal as well as more traditional--- using painting, drawing and color in an abstract expressionist language to express his involvement in the physical world.

With his more recent painting, he has broken the boundaries of his early abstraction, creating powerful fields of dense color that still, somehow, reference natural forms and materials.

He continues to live and work in Ulster County, New York and Monhegan, Maine.

Simon graduated from Cooper Union, and her work, no matter how abstract, is always strongly anchored by drawing. Working in a wide range of styles, from representational to abstract to three dimensional constructions, she has always retained her sense of color as a way to communicate both ideas and emotions.

Her work is personal, and always rooted in what is going on around her: land and seascapes, landmarks in her life and homely objects.  The current work is perhaps her most personal to date, dealing with loss and friendship and profound changes in the world around her.

She is the recipient of two artist in residence grants: Altos de Chavon in the Dominican Republic, and Fundacion Valparaiso, Mojacar, Spain.  Most recently, her drawings from the McCarthy era were published as Pentagram Papers #43.  Drawing McCarthy: a Collection of Drawings by Arline Simon Documenting the Army-McCarthy Hearings of 1954.  These chilling drawings still resonate even for those too young to have been aware of the event.

Simon maintains studios in Yonkers, New York and Monhegan, Maine.

Upstream Gallery was started in 1991 by a group of Westchester artists who were looking for a venue to show their work outside of traditional commercial galleries.

The gallery has two street level exhibition spaces.  The current artist members work in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, collage / assemblage, print-making and photography.  Styles range from the representational to the abstract.  Members have shown in a wide variety of venues throughout the United States and Europe. Upstream encourages artists to submit their work for review.  Submissions are reviewed on a monthly basis.
