September 2013

Greetings!
This month we honor the memory of our dear colleague, June Otani, in a full gallery retrospective devoted to her work.  June was an extraordinary fighter, overcoming a very difficult childhood and dealing with her last illness with courage, dignity and grace.  Her work covers a wide range of media and methods, always united by her strong graphic vision and remarkable palette.

Please join us and her family to celebrate her life and work on Sunday, September 15th from 2-5pm.

June Otani

June Otani was born on July 7th, 1934 in California.  She and her family were interned in a relocation camp for Japanese Americans from May 1942 to Nov. 1945 in Gila River, Arizona.  Great Expectations, right, is a remembrance of her mother's apron and Identification papers during that period.  Otani's work was often intensely personal, yet always accessible.  She had an explosive sense of color, which she used with elegance and formal energy.

Otani studied at the Art Center college of Design, where she earned a BFA with honors. She later studied at The Art Students League, Pratt and SVA. She had a very successful career as an illustrator, winning many awards. Her illustrations graced over twenty children's books, including her favorites, Chibi, A True Story from Japan, Little Dog Poems and Little Dog and Duncan. (Clarion Publishers) Later on, she focused on wood sculptures, oil painting, printmaking and mixed media. Her work was exhibited in 29 shows ranging from the National Association of Women Artists, Pratt Graphic Gallery, Silvermine Guild and the Hudson River Museum. In 2000, she exhibited at the Circolo Artistico Gallery in Bologna Italy.

Upstream Button

Upstream Gallery was started in 1991 by a group of Westchester artists who were looking for a venue to show their work outside of traditional commercial galleries.

The gallery has two street level exhibition spaces.  The current artist members work in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, collage / assemblage, print-making and photography.  Styles range from the representational to the abstract.  Members have shown in a wide variety of venues throughout the United States and Europe. Upstream encourages artists to submit their work for review.  Submissions are reviewed on a monthly basis.
