June 2013

Greetings!
This month we feature the dynamic range and energy of Sondra Gold's newest sculptures in bronze and steel.  Her work provides a fine physical contrast for Monica Bradbury's lustrous, memory filled bridges and the elegant punch of her most recent baseball drawings.

The south gallery will feature more work from gallery members new and established as we head into our second summer season.

Please join us to explore the wonderful worlds of Bradbury and Gold at the opening reception, Sunday, June  2nd 2-5 pm.  (And share in a special concert by Jason Breslin at 3 pm!)

Bradbury's Bridge paintings reflect the fascination and affection she feels for the Tappan Zee Bridge after living on the river for many years.  She has "sailed under it, driven over and under it, all the while trying to figure out how to capture its many changing moods and structural dynamics".

While her baseball drawings seem very disparate, Bradbury feels both subjects pose the same set of challenges: "how to use the inherent dynamic of line to capture the interaction of forms and the forces they create."

New Sculptures
Gold says: "The cold rolled steel I use limits the shapes I can make.   I further limit myself by using triangles. Two triangles of different sizes are welded together.  Other triangles are added until I feel I have a whole. The shadows the piece casts are as important as  the negative spaces that appear and disappear as the piece is viewed from different angles.

For my Bronze sculptures I usually start with an image of the figure in motion.  The way the forms swell and taper, sharpen and soften are important to me.  Turning a piece to view different sides and seeing how it changes adds to the excitement of sculpture."

Upstream Gallery was started in 1991 by a group of Westchester artists who were looking for a venue to show their work outside of traditional commercial galleries.

The gallery has two street level exhibition spaces.  The current artist members work in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, collage / assemblage, print-making and photography.  Styles range from the representational to the abstract.  Members have shown in a wide variety of venues throughout the United States and Europe. Upstream encourages artists to submit their work for review.  Submissions are reviewed on a monthly basis.
