May 2013

Greetings!

After an extremely busy Studio Tour Weekend (over 125 visitors in two days!), we are delighted to take a breath and present two new Solo Shows.  Susan Steeg's The Industrial and Urban Landscape: Works from the Past and Present, employs  her rigorous composition, bold yet subtle palette and vivid sense of place to show us something entirely new about the structures around us.

On a completely different note, Paul Greco's The Mothership Series creates an ancient universe of visitors, myth and spirit out of found metal and other objects.

Please join us to explore both of these worlds at our opening reception on Sunday, May 5th from 2-5pm.

The Industrial & Urban Landscape: Works from the Past and Present

Steeg's work, a compilation of past and present paintings, explores how forgotten industrial structures have a beauty and enduring quality all their own.  Much of this work is drawn from sites photographed in Pittsburgh and New York.

Steeg says of her work ".. the surprise of the unexpected keeps me creatively engaged.... things behind other things, things unknown or mysterious...

Greco's exhibition includes new acrylic on canvas and acrylic on paper paintings, artwork incorporating found objects, leaded glass and a few previously unshown paintings.  As a mostly abstract artist, Greco's first goal is to create beauty through line, composition, balance, texture and color.  Secondly, he hopes to open the viewer's eye to some of the energy he derives from the worlds of nature, politics and spirituality.

Upstream Button

Upstream Gallery was started in 1991 by a group of Westchester artists who were looking for a venue to show their work outside of traditional commercial galleries.

The gallery has two street level exhibition spaces.  The current artist members work in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, collage / assemblage, print-making and photography.  Styles range from the representational to the abstract.  Members have shown in a wide variety of venues throughout the United States and Europe. Upstream encourages artists to submit their work for review.  Submissions are reviewed on a monthly basis.
