Today in Christian History
On this day in 843 Empress Theodora reinstated icons once and for all in the Eastern churches, effectively ending the medieval iconoclastic controversy. A council in 787 had allowed the veneration of icons, but opponents of images still controlled most of the government and much of the church leadership. The controversy continued, however, and was one of the reasons for the Great Schism between Catholics and the Orthodox in 1054. |

No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by advantage for others. So, no matter how much time you spend fasting, no matter how much you sleep on a hard floor and eat ashes and sigh continually, if you do no good to others, you do nothing great.

St. Thomas Concert Series
Saturday, 20 February
7:30pm
The St. Thomas Concert Series presents The Clarion Singers for a sublime evening of music. Guest conductor Stephen Salts leads the first half in a program of early through contemporary pieces, featuring works by Victoria, Tomkins, Harris and Runestad. The second half of the program focuses on works by composer J. Aaron McDermid, and we are thrilled that Mr. McDermid will be present to conduct them himself. There is no admission charge, but a freewill offering will be taken to support Clarion's 2016 Canterbury residency.
If you missed the first concert of the 2016 St. Thomas Concert Series last month, fear not: an excerpt from a live recording of Bach's Fugue in C Minor is featured in the video below:
